[Dspace-tech] DSpace-CRIS, Alpha version announced
***apologies for cross-posting*** CILEA and the University of Hong Kong (HKU) are pleased to announce the immediate availability for download of the first alpha release of the DSpace CRIS module. https://github.com/CILEA/dspace-cris Publications are an important output of the research cycle. They allow communication between scholars, and measurement and decision support of research amongst research administrators. However there are many other equally important entities in research that need description and tracking, such as projects, grants, patents, organization units, researcher profiles (people), etc. Integrating and contextualizing all of these entities along with publications, adds greater value to each individual piece, in terms of visibility, discovery, and understanding of the total research picture. One name used for such integrations is Current Research Information System (CRIS). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Current_Research_Information_System This DSpace addon enables the ingestion, storage, display and management of metadata fulltext on these other research entities. This module produces a smooth integration between native DSpace items (publications) and other CRIS entities. All entities (native DSpace items or new CRIS Entities) can be linked with each other using autocomplete/lookup functions in the submission edit phase and the inter-navigation in visualizations. This is the first public release. Richer versions with more features and functionality will appear soon. These are described in the DSpace CRIS Roadmap page: https://github.com/CILEA/dspace-cris/wiki/Roadmap Most of these features are now in The HKU Scholars Hub. http://hub.hku.hk The current version works on a customized version of DSpace 1.8.2 JSPUI and can be installed by following the instructions provided here: https://github.com/CILEA/dspace-cris/wiki/Installation We expect to release a complete upgrade of the DSpace CRIS module to DSpace 3 in the coming months. Some of this code base will make its way into general DSpace releases, such as “Solr Discovery for JSPUI” in DSpace 3. However we envision that most of this work will be an optional addon, which DSpace developers can choose to implement, or not. In the spirit of open source, we hope that this DSpace CRIS module will receive wide adoption in the DSpace community. We hope that many will find useful and then build further upon this start. To enable this desired multilateral collaboration, we ask that you send any inquires directly to the dspace mailing lists (mainly dspace-tech@lists.sourceforge.net). Up to now, this has been a collaboration between CILEA and HKU. The HKU side is supported by funding from the HKU Office of Knowledge Exchange and the University Libraries. A note on mailing list etiquette: https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/DSPACE/Mailing+List+Etiquette Our open regards to all, CILEA HKU -- Monitor your physical, virtual and cloud infrastructure from a single web console. Re: [Dspace-tech] suppress indexing a collection
On Mon, Nov 26, 2012 at 4:29 AM, Mark Ludwig uld...@gmail.com wrote: If you have a collection you do not want indexed with your other dspace collections, is there a way to index the collection separately or not at all? Hi Mark, please, always include the information which DSpace version, interface and theme you're using and whether you're using Discovery. Unfortunately, you cannot easily exclude a collection from indexing, at least not without modifying code. AFAIK, the search and browse indexes are not separate, so it's not even possible to have something browsable, but not searchable. What you could do is withdraw items from public display, which would make them accessible only to administrators. The only practical solution I can offer you is to move that content to a separate DSpace instance. It can even run on the same server and servlet container (and even the same DSpace webapps if you wish), but it will have it's own URL, database and assetstore (and possibly theme). We currently recommend the same solution (separate instances) to separate public vs. dark archives. Also,is there any way to block internet crawlers from indexing this one collection in dspace? Sure, the standard solution is the best - use robots.txt. That will work if you move to the separate repository, because within one repository, youu can't tell from the URL (which is in handle format) which comunity/collection an item belongs to. It so happens that this particular collection would be very large, about 750,000 pages as individual documents. Is there a practical point at which a separate dspace instance is appropriate? That sounds like a moderate size. There are really no intentional limits within DSpace, you're restricted only by the amount of RAM and CPU cycles. If you hit a problem, you may want to consider using a reverse caching proxy (or an army of them for really large installations). Do you feel like you're hitting any limits already? If you put the extracted text into the TEXT bundle with the correct name, it shouldn't be overwritten by next filter-media run (but please, test this using the -i parameter to filter-media and report back, there might be some nuances to that). The changes will be overwritten only when you run filter-media with the -f parameter. I ask this because I want to know that if I update the text files using a crowd-source sort of affair, would the changes stick or not? Re: [Dspace-tech] Interested in a simplified build?
Just a brief note.. I'd love to see what you've done via Ant as well would encourage you to post it somewhere (JIRA / GitHub). There are easy ways to embed Ant as a dependency (so folks don't even know they are using Ant behind the scenes) and using the Maven Antrun plugin. So, I wouldn't disregard the work just cause it uses Ant to get things done. The longer term installation goal is really just to simplify the number of dependencies needed to install DSpace. But, as mentioned, since Ant can be embedded we may be able to still use what you've come up with so far. - Tim On 11/22/2012 7:03 PM, Steve Swinsburg wrote: Hi, Yes, consolidating build tech would be a good step forward. Right now we are using 1.8 so had to work with what we have. Ouch, this is just too wrong. Better delete everything and start from scratch. Here's the installation chapter in the official docs: https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/DSDOC18/Installation Here's an unofficial installation guide for Windows that details the other software that needs to be installed for DSpace to work. http://ir.inflibnet.ac.in/dxml/bitstream/handle/1944/1590/Installing%20DSpace%20on%20Windows.pdf On Mon, Nov 26, 2012 at 10:22 PM, theotherguy richardangue...@yahoo.com wrote: # dspace.dir = /dspace dspace.dir = C:/Dspace/dspace-1.8.2/dspace-1.8.2-src-release Read Overview of DSpace Directories in the installation chapter. dspace.dir is supposed to point to the installation directory, not the sources. # DSpace host name - should match base URL. Where to change that depends on how you start it up, but you should start looking for an init script for it. Re: [Dspace-tech] ownership of handle-plugin.log files, dspace 1.8.2
Hi Sara, The best way is to start the handle server process as another user, or change the user after it's started. Generally, the user that owns a process is the one who'll own files created by it. Thanks the speedy response, this answers my question. For some reason the HANDLE_USER wasn't set in the /etc/init.d/start-handle-server .
