[Dspace-tech] Duplicate step License in workflow
Hi I'd like to know if is possible to duplicate the step of 'License' in submission workflow of DSpace. My idea that I want to do with this is to have two steps of 'License', and put one standard text for step 'License1' and another step 'License2' with another different standard text. It is possible? Has anyone done this before? [Dspace-tech] Making DSpace upgrades a very stable proposal.
Sorry for the cross-post but this relates to both lists. Hi All ==SYSTEM== DSpace 3.2, Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. ==Problem== Our recent upgrade revealed some serious system stability problems. 1. We had to set the maxHttpHeaderSize parameter for Tomcat 6, when using Tomcat without the Apache mod_jk module. 2. We had to delete some old tables in the PostgreSQL DB relating to the conversion of the browse indexes to the SOLR DB. We run one of the larger repositories with 55,000 records and about 10,000 full text items. We also have a large admin and normal user base after two years operation. So although the demo DSpace website may work, things change radically in production environments, when doing version upgrades, not fresh installs, and having many records and users. ==Possible Solution== The Debian Linux distribution has a solution for always maintaining a stable version of software. They have an unstable, testing and stable repository of software. All new items land in unstable. When the new items are then tested and if proved working, then they are moved to the testing repository. The items stay in the testing repository until all bugs have been revealed and removed. Then items in testing move to the stable repository. This could suit DSpace very well. Those institutions that do not employ a full technology support stack, could then safely run the stable version of DSpace. Those institutions that have a full technology support stack could then run testing and help to get new software into unstable. This would also help libraries in developing nations that do not normally have a full technology stack of expertise at their disposal to run the latest stable version of DSpace. ==Possible Action== Perhaps a resolution could be made to Duraspace community management to change to such a release process. This would allow new features to land in DSpace safely after being throughly tried and tested in large production environments. [Dspace-tech] DSPACE Upgrade from version 1.6.0 to version 3.2
Dear Sirs, Kindly I need your help in the upgrading of our DSPACE from version 1.6.0 to 3.2, upon your below advise I prepared the following scenario: 1. I prepared 2 new servers: one for the middle-tier and one for the database (Oracle) 2. I will install from scratch the DSPACE 3.2 3. I will copy from our current DSPACE 1.6.0 all the files and directories under dpsce1.6\assetstore then I will paste them to the new one under dspace3.2\assetsore. 4. I will import the database from the old oracle database 1.6.0 to the new oracle database 3.2 5. I will run all the upgrade oracle scripts that related to the database (*.sql scripts) 6. I will add manually the customizations in dspace.cfg of the current version 1.6.0 into dspace.cfg of the new version 3.2 and also in the .cfg files that exist under [dspace]/config/modules directory (since in version 3.2 the dspace.cfg has been split up: many module configuration have been moved out of the dspace.cfg and into separate configuration files in the [dspace]/config/modules directory). 7. I will add manually the customizations in the files news-xmlui.xml and imput-forms.xml for the new version 3.2 Please correct me if I am wrong or if I missed some important steps, thank you in advance. Re: [Dspace-tech] DSPACE Upgrade...
Hi Joseph, consider using Postgres instead of Oracle. While many users continue to run on Oracle without problems, as of DSpace 4 all our developers now use Postgres so all functionality there is guaranteed and verified to work. However, if you have a competent Oracle DBA, there should be no problem remaining on Oracle. As part of step 1) make sure to install the recommended versions of Java JDK, Maven, ant, Tomcat as per [1]. After restoring your database on the new system, run update-sequences.sql. If you made any customizations to your theme, I recommend you start over because the default theme has changed (Reference in 1.6, Mirage in 3), while following the recommendations here [2]. After upgrading to DSpace 3, run Solr optimize as per Step 10 here [3]. Schedule any periodic tasks in cron [4] (page newly added in DSpace 4 docs). Consider using Discovery, as from DSpace 4, it will be the default. It's well tested in DSpace 3. If you're using OAI, it was rewritten from scratch in DSpace 3, so read the docs [5]. Depending on which authentication method you're using, review any changes to it (e.g. there were some changes in LDAP and Shibboleth, possibly others). Depending on which statics you're using, consider migrating to Solr stats [6] or ElasticSearch stats [7]. Re: [Dspace-tech] Making DSpace upgrades a very stable proposal.
Hi Hilton, On Tue, Jan 28, 2014 at 3:09 PM, Hilton Gibson hilton.gib...@gmail.com wrote: 1. We had to set the maxHttpHeaderSize parameter for Tomcat 6, when using Tomcat without the Apache mod_jk module. this was specific to your environment: 1) You enabled the (optional in DSpace 3) Discovery module and 2) you had a large number of users in a group, that exceeded the default limits of Tomcat (HTTP header size). I agree that, with Discovery being the default in DSpace 4, it's important to fully support it. But, unfortunately, limits in Tomcat is something we have zero influence on. The only thing we can do better is to document it. 2. We had to delete some old tables in the PostgreSQL DB relating to the conversion of the browse indexes to the SOLR DB. Again, you chose to enable a non-default, experimental feature in DSpace 3 (Solr browse DAOs). It had a known bug with a documented workaround and it's fixed in DSpace 4 where this is enabled by default. As you can see, there is little else that could have been done to prevent this, regardless of our release/versioning/support infrastructure. Bugs do happen and we do try to fix them. ==Possible Solution== I'm very familiar with both Debian and DSpace. As you know, several years ago DSpace opted for time-based releases. These are basically the anti-thesis of released when ready, although we do adopt its freeze/test/release strategy for all major releases. It is my personal opinion that time-based releases have proved to work very well for the DSpace community and I don't see the incentive to change them. A similar strategy - LTS releases - could work, but from a practical standpoint there would have to be developers commited to maintaining an old version with bug fixes for many years including the stack of old versions of dependencies which are also being phased out of support - I currently don't see anyone interested in doing this. Re: [Dspace-tech] Update Database Schema from DSpace 3.X to 4.0
Hi Bhavesh This is how I ran my database schema upgrades. http://wiki.lib.sun.ac.za/index.php/SUNScholar/Upgrading/Repository_Software#Step_3_-_Database_upgrades You will have to modify the paths to suit your installation. This would not be needed if we all agreed to use: http://wiki.lib.sun.ac.za/index.php/SUNScholar/Reference_Architecture Just my little rant after an upgrade ordeal ;-) Regards hg *Hilton Gibson* Ubuntu Linux Systems Administrator JS Gericke Library Room 1025D Stellenbosch University Private Bag X5036 Stellenbosch 7599 South Africa Tel: +27 21 808 4100 | Cell: +27 84 646 4758 http://scholar.sun.ac.za http://bit.ly/goodir http://library.sun.ac.za http://za.linkedin.com/in/hiltongibson On 29 January 2014 07:21, Bhavesh Patel bhavesh.bece...@gmail.com wrote: Dear Tech team, I have install DSpace 4.0 and restore the database of DSpace 3.X. Please run one of the following scripts to update your database: - PostgreSQL: [dspace-source]/dspace/etc/postgres/database_schema_3-4.sql It's shows me command not found or permission deny.. Re: [Dspace-tech] Making DSpace upgrades a very stable proposal.
Hi Helix 1. The issues regarding experimental features may have been avoided by using: http://wiki.lib.sun.ac.za/index.php/SUNScholar/Reference_Architecture, as i mentioned in an email previously to the dspace-tech mailing list I think. 2. About the solution - let me expand - the previous email was long and I did not want to lose reader attention. It's simple... Some very large production institutions who have the full technology support stack available can be the official new release testers for new features for a certain amount of time, before a stable release is issued. This is if they are willing to do it to help the Duraspace community. My analogy with Debian seems to have misled the lists - sorry. The issue is to test new features in large production environments with all types of reference architecture before a stable release is announced. Cheers hg *Hilton Gibson* Ubuntu Linux Systems Administrator JS Gericke Library Room 1025D Stellenbosch University Private Bag X5036 Stellenbosch 7599 South Africa Tel: +27 21 808 4100 | Cell: +27 84 646 4758 http://scholar.sun.ac.za http://bit.ly/goodir http://library.sun.ac.za http://za.linkedin.com/in/hiltongibson On 28 January 2014 16:56, helix84 heli...@centrum.sk wrote: Hi Hilton, On Tue, Jan 28, 2014 at 3:09 PM, Hilton Gibson hilton.gib...@gmail.com wrote: 1.
