[Dspace-tech] Batch delete e-people and e-groups

2014-07-07 Thread Smith, Ina ism...@sun.ac.za
Good day DSpace Colleagues

We would like to remove ''old'' data from our e-people and e-groups in DSpace.
We use a DSpace instance as a temporary space where theses/dissertations are
submitted (only students nominated to graduate can submit here):
http://etd.sun.ac.za Since we are now preparing for the December 2014
graduation period, we would like to get rid of all data in a batch, not having
to delete individual records one by one.

http://etd.sun.ac.za/admin/groups
http://etd.sun.ac.za/admin/epeople

Is it possible to do this deletion in a batch, and if so, can somebody please
indicate how?

Many thanks and kind regards,
Ina

Re: [Dspace-tech] Diacritics and DSpace 4.0 and 3.1

2014-01-15 Thread Smith, Ina ism...@sun.ac.za
We've experienced the same problem (although UTF8/Unicode was activated within
DSpace), and decided to do away with diacritics completely (in titles and
surnames). End-users so far have not complained. I suspect they seldom use
diacritics when entering search terms. It would be interesting to know how
Google addresses this issue.

Kind regards

helix84,

I did not have that attribute but I did add it to both servers, and restarted
tomcat however I do get the same results, on both instances.

Thanks!

[Dspace-tech] Retrieving statistics from DSpace

2013-10-24 Thread Smith, Ina ism...@sun.ac.za
Dear all

We would very much like to demonstrate the impact of our repository, and would
like to query the database for the following information (our repository is at
http://scholar.sun.ac.za) - specifically the downloads per item according to:

dc.type - Thesis
dc.title
dc.date.issued - for the years 2012, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005
Pdf download statistics

The above needs to be exported to a spreadsheet in the end. Can somebody
perhaps advice how we should go about, do we need a Java programmer, or what
skills are required?

Many many thanks in advance.

With kind regards
Ina

[Dspace-tech] Item templates in DSpace 1.8.2

2013-02-07 Thread Smith, Ina ism...@sun.ac.za
Hi there

Is it possible to create an item template in DSpace 1.8.2 and apply it to all
collections under a specific community? One of our communities contains 200
collections, and it is a major task to edit each collection independently and
then create a template. It would be highly appreciated if someone can assist?

Thank you.

Kind regards
Ina

Re: [Dspace-tech] How to let end-users submit to DSpace but hold the record and its attachment till it is fully checked by library staff

2012-10-23 Thread Smith, Ina ism...@sun.ac.za
Dear Sherman

When creating a collection, you have to create an electronic workflow for each
collection.

1. Give the Submitters submission rights. They have to register first so
that you can see them as an e-person when assigning rights.

2. Setup the workflow as follows:
Submit (Library staff and other end-users)
Workflow Step 2: Accept/Reject/Edit Metadata (Reviewer)
Workflow Step 3: Edit Metadata (Cataloguers)

3. Assign specific persons to each of the above.

4. Once the metadata editor/cataloguer has had a look at the record, they
can approve it and commit to archive. Only then it will be visible to the rest
of the world.

Dear All,

Our DSpace repository (v1.5) currently only allows library staff to make
submissions. What do we have to do to allow end-users to submit to DSpace but
to hold their submissions till it is fully checked by library staff. Thanks.

Dear all,
thanks to your help, i have been able to successfully deploy an Institutional
Repository for the University of Ghana using Dspace 1.8.1.

The URL is http://ugspace.ug.edu.gh:8080/xmlui/
Is it possible i can change the port 8080 to the standard port 80 so that when
even people type http://ugspace.ug.edu.gh:8080/xmlui/ it translates as
http://ugspace.ug.edu.gh

How do i increase access to my repository. ie when i do a submission and later
i search google or any other search engine, i usually don't get my submission
as part of the results the Search Engine returns.

Thanks for the responses.

[Dspace-tech] Call for Papers: ETD2011

2011-01-06 Thread Smith, Ina ism...@sun.ac.za
*Apologies for cross-postings*

ETD2011: Call for Papers, Presentations, Posters, Panels and Workshops

ETD2011 - 14th International Symposium on Electronic Theses and Dissertations

13-17 September 2011

Cape Town, South Africa

http://dl.cs.uct.ac.za/conferences/etd2011

==Overview==

ETD2011 is the latest in a series of international conferences of the Networked
Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (NDLTD). The expected audience will
include advocates, practitioners, researchers and students working in the area
of electronic theses and dissertations and, more broadly, open access and
digital repositories. The conference is hosted in South Africa by the SA
National Research Foundation, University of Cape Town and Stellenbosch
University. ETD2011 will provide local and international attendees with the
opportunity to exchange ideas and enrich their respective programmes, bridging
the infamous north-south divide.

The theme of ETD2011 is: From Islands to Global Interconnectedness, in the
spirit of the African philosophical notion that we are who we are because of
others. Open Access repositories, and ETD programmes in particular, have
reached a stage of widespread acceptance around the world. Many attendees will
come from institutions where ETD programmes already exist or are imminent. It
is therefore appropriate that we now look to the development of relationships
among institutions to, firstly, support one another at the level of policy and
advocacy, secondly, provide users with services that span institutional and
regional boundaries and, lastly, address global problems such as preservation
by means of collaboration.

The conference programme will include technical paper sessions, plenary keynote
addresses, poster presentations, panels, tutorials and workshops

-- to cater for a broad audience of participants.

We invite you to submit a paper, poster or panel or workshop proposal for
ETD2011.

[Dspace-tech] Create index error

2010-10-25 Thread Smith, Ina ism...@sun.ac.za
Dear all

We experience major difficulties re-indexing our content on DSpace 1.6.2
(http://scholar.sun.ac.za). When using the Basic Search and Advanced Search,
nothing is retrieved. Any advise out there?

We get the following after deleting indexes and then trying to create them
again.

The script we run is attached. This used to work. We recently upgraded to
Ubuntu 10.04 and DSpace 1.6.2, but this script ran successfully after the
upgrades.

The problem has only occurred during the last week or so. We suspect that
something trying to be indexed is throwing the error, some metadata field
content.

Are we right?

Many thanks in advance

Kind regards

Ina

[Dspace-tech] Digital Preservation Policies

2010-03-25 Thread Smith, Ina ism...@sun.ac.za
Good day

We are in the process of conducting a content analysis of existing digital
preservation policies by other institutions in order to also start working
towards a digital preservation policy for the University of Stellenbosch, South
Africa. Would highly appreciate it if there are some folks out there who would
be willing to share - case studies are also welcome. Maybe there is a
comprehensive list out there listing all the policies already? If you know of
any, I would really appreciate it if you can forward it ...

Many thanks in advance!

With kind regards

[Dspace-tech] Export/ Importa function in DSpace

2009-12-17 Thread Smith, Ina ism...@sun.ac.za
Dear all

I have a question re the Export function in DSpace. Export and Export (Migrate)
does exactly the same, and there is no Import function which makes it very
difficult to manage DSpace from a non-technical DSpace Administrator's side.
Are you perhaps looking into it, or do I have it wrong? It would be very nice
to import and export items around while being logged in as an Administrator,
without having an IT expert to use the command line packager tool.

Looking forward and would appreciate any assistance.

Kind regards
