In my case, "it depends". For some applications, PC based software
is a good solution, as is a hardware modem attached to a radio. In
other applications, there is no room for add on boxes of any kind, PC
or node adapter. For example, when I take my IC-91AD out, I just
want to carry the radio and no additional boxes to make it do
D-STAR. For that scenario, an internal hardware implementation of
the codec is the only answer.

Would love to play with this as well. 73, tom n4zpt

I missed the whole DVAP part of the formula.

I'll save some time here folks, Robin has not enabled DPRS on the DVAP yet, he
hopes to eventually but it is not enabled now, so GPS info will not work yet
(Confirmed this on the DVAP Yahoo group a week ago)

Free?? TANSTAAFL or in this case installing a laptop in my car is not
free. For me it needs to be a hardware implementation. I do not mind
outboard modems or adapters hooked to the 9600 baud port on my mobile
radios.

The actually voice stream is 2400 bps with 1200 bps FEC. In the intro
the author does say they are targeting 2400 bps.

Would be fun to comparison test codecs over the air even it it were
using external adapters. 73, tom n4zpt

[DSTAR_DIGITAL] Re: DVAP - DStar position information is not picked up by the repeater?

2010-06-14 Thread ae5pl
GPS mode: you must set your message per the calculator at
http://www.aprs-is.net/dprscalc.aspx This ensures bit errors do not get
propagated to APRS. This is not needed for GPS-A mode as GPS-A mode always
contains a CRC.

The DVAP is like the DV-Dongle: it attaches to the repeater system via the
gateway. For a number of reasons, the D-PRS IGates on the gateway only monitor
traffic received from the RP2C (repeater controller). Therefore, position
reports received via a DVAP will not be seen by the D-PRS IGates and will not
be inserted into APRS-IS. However, the DV-Dongle software supports a TCP port
that allows D-PRS Interface (also available for free at
http://www.aprs-is.net/dprs.aspx) to act as your IGate on your PC. If the DVAP
software supports this TCP port, you are good to go by just downloading D-PRS
Interface, installing it, configuring it to talk to your DVAP, and configuring
it to connect to APRS-IS.

Hope this helps.
