Just out of curiosity Carl, how can you tell that the JA station was 
using a dongle ?  I suspect the JA station was call sign routing to 
Cleveland (CQ Cleveland) and because Cleveland was linked to a 
reflector, all stations likewise linked heard the JA station.  Why else 
would the US station need RXCS to be heard in JA ?  steve

The addition of Dplus to the native Dstar transport system can make for 
some un-intended consequences.  Folks did AOK without Dplus linking for 
quite some time.  Dplus is nice for tying repeaters together for wide 
area operations and a great add on to the native system.  For me, it is 
easier to set UR=W8KRF and call you than to try and figure out if you 
are linked / unlinked / or know what repeater you are using.  I'll try 
and give you a call - use One Touch, RXCS to capture my call to reply.

Phase 1 project 25 digital is a public safety specification.  I know of 
no amateur radios in production that offer P25.  For interoperability 
many public safety entities install base station equipment for the 
non-compatible system and cross connect the foreign radio system through 
a switch to the native system.  For example an 800 Mhz EDACS public 
safety system installs VHF P25 stations and cross connect on demand 
through a switch.  When public safety moves to phase2 digital there will 
be a glut of phase 1 radios that hams may use in amateur service.  I was 
hoping Alinco would offer a DSTAR add on board to make their radio 
compatible.

DSTAR on 220 sounds like it would make a tremendous lot of sense.  
Propagation similar to 2M - No Pave Paws ?  Radar - clean spectrum 
available - Antennas and Duplexers would be an issue for a little while, 
but could surely be overcome.  Folks would for the most part be buying a 
new Icom repeater anyhow, so cost would be about the same, 2M v 1.25M.  
I am not sure how much of the band remains purely amateur, though.  At 
first glance this might be a great direction for dstar in the US.   steve

Don't know about the 2820, but on an ID800 I ran a GPS emulator program 
in place of the GPS receiver to feed the radio.  I can put in any 
coordinates I want.  Do a search on messages or look in the files and 
links sections - I believe the emulator program and some relative posts

Interesting side note.  I was thinking 2 Ghz operational fixed links 
were displaced in the US by PCS Cellular service - perhaps 960 Mhz or 6 
Ghz ?  Doesn't make that much difference - many applications use 960 
Mhz. with a fractional T1 data channel.


Trunking repeaters just allows a large pool of subscriber units better 
access to a small pool (trunk group) of radio channels.  Certainly not 
the correct answer for every application.  Now if the radios were using 
amplitude modulation instead of some form of angle modulation, that may 
be different.

It's easy to segregate into different banks.  USA1, USA2, CANADA, etc.  
Also not enough radio channels to hold every gateway..Would be nice 
to have a bank of call signs, another bank of frequencies, etc (larger 
than those available now) where you can mix and match UR/RPT1/RPT1, or 
better yet, a PC interface to replace the control head with a GUI 
interface and downloadable repeater lists...  steve

 via IP addressing, it extracts the D-STAR frame and directs it based on 
 its callsign and associated port (not a meaningless IP address).  If the 
 D-STAR frame is DV, it should eventually end up a radio or other device 
 with AMBE decoding capability, if it is DD, the DD device would extract 
 the Ethernet packet and present it to the device's Ethernet connection.  
 Then the DD device owner can build whatever network topoplogy they 
 desire based on the protocol selected. (For example, a token passing 
 bus, might be better for ID-1 throughput, than a CDMA based TCP/IP system.)

 Personally, I would not implement gateway address management as a TCP/IP 
 DNS system, leave that to allow gateways (and other Internet connected 
 D-STAR application servers)  to find and communicate with one another.  
 The address mapping can happen in dynamic structures (like a hashtable) 
 and only use a scheme like the DNS records, to fill in when the 
 destination gateway is not known.

 the more commonly used side of D-STAR now.

Take 1, IC800D.  Replace the loudspeaker with an 8 to 10 ohm resistor.  
Connect a small transformer across the loudspeaker (terminating 
resistor) to isolate the dstar receive audio from the FM radio.  There 
is a +5 VDC signal from the micro in the ID800 used to mute the 
loudspeaker.  This signal goes to nearly 0 VDC during receive.  (The 
squelch signal on the ID800 does not work on DSTAR - only FM and maybe 
AM for packet connections).  I used the 5V going to 0 V during receive 
to turn on a small PNP transistor used to turn on the transmitter on a 
MA/COM M3 repeater.  I set the M3 up for duplex 4 wire audio.  The 600 
Ohm secondary from the ID800 goes to the line in on the M3.

The DSTAR to FM audio is 'reasonable' but I prefer the crisp audio from 
the ID800 to the more bass sounding audio from the M3.

Next I used an 8 pin data connector in the mic jack of the ID800.  Took 
RUS (receiver unsquelched) from the M3 to an NPN keying transistor, to 
the PTT lead on the ID800 (be careful - there is +DC in the mic 
connector and you could really do some damage connecting to the wrong 
pin.  Finally I took line out from the M3 through a second 1:1 600 Ohm 
transformer with a pad to drop the level into the mic jack of the ID800.

FM to DSTAR is marginal to acceptable as far as audio quality goes.

Also the volume control on the ID800 needs to be set and taped in place 
for reasonable TX audio into the M3.

The M3 is set up for 3 khz @ 1000hz = -=10 dbm 600 and vice versa.  
Channel guard adds 0.75 khz - to the TX setting.

I did not leave the FM to DSTAR mic / ptt connection hooked up.  I do 
leave DSTAR to FM connected and have the gateway connected to 5A in the 
morning and 1C afternoon - just to give the FM folks a taste of what 
DSTAR is like.  Plan is to leave it a month or so, the then unhook it so 
I can have my ID800 back for fixed station operation.

Your mileage may vary.  I sure DON'T want to pollute a nice DSTAR 
network with not so good sounding FM, but I wouldn't criticize anyone 
for making such a connection (with prior consent of the reflector owner 
/ operator and gateway operator and others who swim in the same stream) 
on a limited basis for demonstration purposes.  (maybe 1 hour a week for 
a net for a month or so, but certainly not full time).

Please don't start a war over this - my opinion only - 73 steve nu5d.

PS - I am disappointed to say the least about the audio quality reports 
from unbiased listeners - also 30+ years in LMR and familiar with 
empahsis / de-emphasis, roll off, etc.  sb

[DSTAR_DIGITAL] Re: Native D-STAR vs. DPLUS linking

There is no question Dplus makes contacts possible for more people, in 
large due to the obtuse nature of setting up radios that you likened to 
MSDOS vs Windows as a user interface in an earlier post.  Many average 
hams find setting up a radio and using the features of say, and IC91, 
far too complex.  Set UR=CQCQCQ and RPT2 to G and you can make contacts, 
provided the repeater is linked to something. 

DSTAR continues to emerge.  That said, I believe the long range solution 
to more fully utilize DSTAR lies in a sensible user interface that 
integrates all of the features of DSTAR (G2 and Dplus) in a user 
friendly format.  Also making system statue available on demand through 
the low speed data capabilities will be a tremendous asset.

Picture adding a $300 PC to your radio and getting a GUI interface where 
the PC gets a daily or weekly update of the state of DSTAR, and uses 
that info to communicate with and control your radio.

I would not go so far to liken G2 Dstar alone to HF Digital because HF 
Digital has functional difficulties like the AOR format being too 
unreliable, and other sound card formats being difficult to set up.  
Dstar saw a lot of growth before Dplus and Dplus continues to be a 
tremendous stimulus for continued growth.

How would you use call sign routing if you obscured the callsigns ?

Call signs are a part of DSTAR and really the matter in my opinion is 
having dstarusersorg log time and date and repeater vs call sign (maybe 
a real call sign, and maybe not).  DX Central manually does similar for 
DX Spotting, Call Sign, Time and Frequency.  To me this (dstarusers.org) 
is very useful in making contacts.  DPRS - wanna be unseen, turn your 
GPS off or use an NMEA Emulator and put your coordinates in Tahiti.

 registration of stations to use the gateway system is the wrong approach.  I 
 understand the concerns for Internet initiated conversations, a la the DV

Hi Jess,

Yep, CW can go anywhere but I was thinking of data like RTTY.  Seems 
Voice, CW, SSTV and FAX are lumped together and CW and FSK are lumped 
into the CW portion of the bands.  Maybe folks with better knowledge of 
the rules can clarify this for me.

Before I bought a dstar system I took a pair of GE Phoenix SX mobiles 
and made a back to back repeater - It would work AOK if I hard keyed the 
transmit radio and left it keyed.  The time it took the synthesizer to 
load and the transmitter to settle caused leading data loss.  I did have 
to do a data inversion taking discriminator audio thru an emitter 
follower stage, then direct coupled to a common emitter stage and to the 
VCO modulator stage (after audio filtering).  A CCD delay IC between the 
RX and TX may have helped - also a crystal controlled TX may have been 
faster on key up.  I also could have left the TX keyed and switched a 
later stage in the TX chain.

That said, as a repeater it simply repeated what was present on the 
input - no DCD - just COR to key - I don't know how this would work in a 
bidirectional application where you carry data from the repeater to the 
fill in area, then turn around and carry data from the fill in area back 
to the repeater site.  Seems like the time needed to load the syn and 
switch between send and receive would kill the thing - not trying to 
rain on your parade, but there may be some challenges.

 is set to [DSTAR_DIGITAL] - Sorry about any trouble it caused.  The tag 
on the German site is [D-STAR] and the WIA tag is [Dstar] - close, but 
not the same as [DSTAR] .

On the ID800 cable, as said in my earlier reply, the programming cable 
has a level shifter that converts RS232 to TTL and goes into the spkr 
jack on the ID800.  It will also program the 2820 thru the speaker jack. 

The DATA cable shown on the N5ZPR site will NOT program the ID800.  It 
is used for low speed data or GPS Emulator, or between a GPS receiver 
and the radio.

The cable shown on the N5SPR site WILL program the 2820 and 91AD thru 
the DATA jack.

A cable with a level shifter is needed to program the ID800 thru the 
speaker jack.

Do you key the repeater transmitter while the hand held is receiving ? 
(+3v on TXE)   Is the transmitter also keyed when the repeater receiver 
is receiving ?

Just tried it.  It makes a short key press beep, then almost immediately 
a second short beep, and then about 2 seconds later when it writes the 
received call sign, a third short beep, all the same pitch.  Be careful, 
Ray - it is easy to put the radio in Call Sign Squelch or DCS if you 
make a short key press.

Actually, the icf files in the files section on this yahoo group have 
pretty much every gateway loaded for the 2820 and 91ad.  I left the A 
bands out in the 91AD icf except JA repeaters because JA repeaters use 
band designators differently to make more room.  It is easy the bulk 
edit the frequency and rept 1 and rept 2 call signs using the 
dstarcom.exe utility from Dean Gibson.  Just put the memories into a 
spread sheet, edit, and then move the edited csv file back into an empty 
icf file.

Yesterday afternoon, I called for close to 1/2 hour trying to make a 
gateway contact to demonstrate dstar to an old ham friend who is new to 
dstar.  I tried gateways all over the world where I saw activity on 
dstarusers.org 

One repeater showing activity kept giving REPT ? - Folks were not 
leaving any room for someone to join in the conversation.  Please leave 
a pause between transmissions - this is just plain courtesy.  Others 
showed the station being on the air but not reaching the destination.

Next when I was trying to contact a distant station that was calling, 
another local ham kept trying.  I asked what he had his UR set to.  He 
said CQCQCQ...Always worked before.  This is someone who has been 
using dstar for over a year.

What this tell me is that WE more experienced (at least I claim such - 
maybe made more mistakes than most) are NOT doing a good job of teaching 
our fellow hams and then we confuse the basics with depending on one 
touch and reflectors.  Both are great tools but folks need the basics 
first - kinda like learning DC theory before doing power factor 
corrections.  Maybe some hands on short training sessions are in order

One touch can really lag when the called station changes bands or 
repeaters.  It may take 10 minutes or longer for YOUR gateway to be 
updated.  Same goes for gateways with non-fixed ip addresses.  It can 
take a LONG time for a new address to propagate thru the network - ie, I 
hear your station, but you cannot hear me because my local gateway 
doesn't know your new address..yet...

Anyhow /soapbox off - no flames intended whatsoeverjust wanting to

One Touch will not work calling the JA stations.  You have to put their 
repeater call in the UR...UR=/JP8YDZA or the like, because their network 
in not completely compatible with things in the US.  Even at best there 
are plenty of opportunities for one touch to be less than reliable, 
folks changing repeaters / or modules, etc and the distant gateway not

You cannot, for the time being, reply to JA7NJN or use one touch.  You 
would have to put their repeater in the UR.  Perhaps UR=/JP7YELA or 
/JP7YEMA.  I don't know about the dongle users - I suspect until the JA 
trust server better coordinates with the US trust server, there will be 
a few hitches.

I don't rely on one touch reply because when folks change repeaters or 
bands it takes some time for the far end gateways to catch up.  For me 
it is much better to call the repeater instead of the individual. 

As far as forgetting the change the UR back to CQCQCQ, kinda like 
remembering to flush.

[dstar_digital] Coaxial Cable Shielding

Aside from the losses mentioned earlier in coaxial cable, (IR loss, 
Dielectric Losses, and Radiation) under radiation, aside from the 
percentage of shielding, the resistivity of the shielding also comes 
into play:

For shielding to work perfectly, the shield conductor must have no 
resistance. If you look up the skin depth formula, one of the terms is 
sigma, the conductivity of the material. If sigma is small, the skin 
depth gets big.
