Re: [dstar_digital] First few key-ups garbled on Dstar Repeater

Update:
Bought a new RP4000V Module from AES. I replaced the module and
everyting worked perfect. All the garble and symptoms were gone
instantly. The original module varied in power from a key-up after
the repeater was idle for more than 5 minutes. I suspect that the
transmitter was dirty. Thanks for all the input. The old module is on
the way back to ICOM. I am anxious to see what the find.

repeater while txng on another rig on another freq.

Maybe already ask, but have you monitored the RF power out to make sure it
comes up right away???

If it does not then you are dealing with a weak signal at first.

I did more testing today and switched out the power supply for the
repeater to an Astron SS-25M. I also cleaned the N-Connector pins and
checked for loose cables. The receive is better today but consistently

Not the case with desensing the receiver that I am listening to. I am
talking and listening to other users to test. The repeater comes up
at very low power with garble and then after about 3 key-ups the S-
Meter jumps up and everyone is clear as a bell. My thought is that
the TX on the IDRP4000 is flakey and is getting into the receiver on
the first couple key-ups. Once it settles down everyone is clear and
the system works normal. This only happens when the repeater sits
idle for 5 mins. or more. While the repeater is up and working no
problems at all.

[ed - I would still try the dummy load, just in case the tx load had something
intermittent that doesn't show up on a meter - then ship the 4000 back to Icom
for repair.]

Gary,

Sorry I was responding to another post.

The low power up is the problem I guess. I've seen this in other PAs and it
usually has to do with a transistor being flaky and most often not soldered
properly. Usually see in older radios like GE or Mot. Having low power would
produce a higher error-bit rate and might be the problem D-Star has with weak
signals where the received is garbled. If a spur when cool then it could be
interfering with the rcvr.

I think the D-Star repeaters us a brick for the PA and have a power control pin
on them. However, if in warranty would think best let ICOM take care of it,
but might be months to fix.

after the repeater sits for 5 - 8 minutes dormant and is keyed up the
first few (2 or 3) transmissions are garbled and then everything
clears up for the duration of the conversation. It's quite annoying
when a user keys up and gives their call not knowing they aren't being
heard. The odds of a user giving their call three times in a row to
kickstart the repeater is pretty slim. I can reproduce this everytime
the repeater is idle for that time period. Thanks for all the input.

Sounds like something is changing behavior as it's heating up. It's
going to take some hunting to find it.
