Hi does anyone know if a 2400 with GLOD is easy to fix? Alex Depends. If you are lucky, its a software reset. Less lucky, but not too bad, is a fuse replacement. Bad, is a new powerboard or CPU is needed. What have you tried so far ? Mad Dog -- Duo/2400 List, The friendliest place on the Net! A listserv for users and fans of Mac subportables. Alex I would guess that without testing, the GLOD is probably fixable by a fuse replacerment, or at worst, a new powerboard. Roll the dice though... Two major data points for GLODS seem to be heat and the Power Manager. The following has been posted before, but if you're new on the List it might save you some grief. FWIW, Chuck's credibility and technical rating is 4-star. At 10:32 AM -0700 9/19/02, chuck goolsbee wrote: Hi Guys, I'll also add one bit of advice that has prevented me from seeing a GLOD in over two years now... After a friend of mine who runs the service area of a local Apple dealer told me this, I've never seen a GLOD: Never plug the computer-side of the AC cord into the 2400c unless it is already plugged into an AC outlet at the other end. Additionally, whenever a battery falls out while the unit is sleeping *do not* re-insert the battery until you have plugged it back into a power outlet (starting with the wall-end) first. I had several occasions when the battery would fall out while it was in my briefcase... and I would not know it until quite some time later. If I popped the battery back it would GLOD about 90% of the time. Bad GLOD that required some time to fix. However if I opened the 2400c lid, and then put it on AC power (before I re-inserted the battery) it would start without fail. Go figure. I will reiterate: since I started living by these rules, I have never had a GLOD. --chuck Ralph Mawyer, Jr. San Antonio, Texas Associate Editor mac2400 ... http://www.sineware.com/mac2400 Your PowerBook 2400 Reference Site They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. Mine was a completely standard 2400 -- the only upgrade was RAM, and that was at purchase (back in 98). I've experienced a couple of near but recoverable GLODs. I'm wondering if there may be something to this: I believe, but am not sure, that there was something common to my two near GLODs. I had been using the PB with the power adapter and put it to sleep immediately after unplugging it. When trying to wake it, it GLODed. Both times it recovered after removing the battery, pressing the reset (for a while), and re-booting w/power. As far as I know, I've never GLODed if the PB is put to sleep after running on the battery for a while. Can it be that the power manager gets confused if sleep is induced too quickly after a power source change? question: has anyone experienced a GLOD when restarting from a shutdown (and not just waking from sleep)? -tom -- Duo/2400 List, The friendliest place on the Net! Never had a GLOD. Bought new in '97 Used for approx. 4 years stock with 80 mbs of RAM Upgraded processor to Nupowr 240 G3 and then the hard drive to 10 gb. Just recently added 96 Mb RAM. Did cardbus upgrade earlier this year. Sadly I just lost the function of the lower PC card slot. However I have had to replace the powerboard twice. First time 4 years ago, then again 3 months ago. Nice, off-topic guys, but how about adding OT: Triumph to the subject line. Cheers...and reminding me of the R75/7 days. ;-) Hi Clay, Is that a bolt on hardtail? Mikuni carb? Just to add my 2 cents, I have used DTT many times they do good work and have fast turn around. Great if you don't have the time or technical savy to repair it yourself. I use my 2400 daily in my sales job so I needed a quick fix. Luckily I am in their area so I could drop off and pick up, made it very speedy. By the way, even after 5 years of using my 2400, I still get a lot of great comments when I take it out at a customers, they are amazed at the small size and quality of the machine. I tried the two different PM resets from Sidney Ho's page at Mac2400 site. If you tried all the reset steps and no luck it does look like a power board problem. no luck, no startup green light comes back and stays steady. --- ?? light is on or is not on? it does make a difference. could be as easy as a fuse, or worst case a dead board if you don't want to or don't have the ability to repair yourself $150 is cheap way to go. The G3 is nice but if you are happy with the way it is now, don't spend the money. This is a stock 2400 in very nice shape with 80 mb ram and a 10gb toshiba drive (from ti-book). i don't have a g3 in it. but i do have a 2nd battery and a nice wireless card and a dockking staiton for it DTT , Brian, says he is 99% sure it is the I/O board. I assume this is the same power I/O board others have had replaced. He says $150 and i should be up and running. If i had a G3 upgrade to install now would certainly be the time to add one. Anyone got any G3 upgrades , or any other fixes i can attempt? It seems to me that if i were to get another of these $300 2400's from ebay or this list that i would be getting the same old powerI/O board and not a new one. ?? light is on or is not on? it does make a difference. could be as easy as a fuse, or worst case a dead board = Brian Getz Personal Email [EMAIL PROTECTED] .com I just gave up on a 2400 with GLOD and just took the hard drive and memory out and put it in my spare parts pile. I tried several of the long power resets and even left the internal backup battery disconnected all night with power off and never had the big removable battery in at all. In my case doing the shorter 15 second resets would result in toggling the Green Light. One time it would remain on after the reset and the next time it would remain off. So did I miss any other clues here? I was assuming I needed a new power-I/O board but since this was a free machine it wasn't worth spending much on since I have two 5300s and a 190. Is there any component replacement on the power board that a skilled technician can do? I have been a ham radio operator for 45 years. I haven't looked closely at the board but have sort of decided not to try and repair multi-layer modern boards. But give me a single layer board and I can almost completely rebuild it. I broke a home TV CRT board in two pieces and managed to repair it and am watching it today. Wayne -- Duo/2400 List, The friendliest place on the Net! [Duo2400] Re: GLOD it seems on my 2400
Bon, my thoughts FWIW: DTT $150 Shipping both ways: $40+ $200 minimum for repair. The DTT is just replacing your I/O board with one they previously repaired..which is fine, just don't think you are getting a 'new' one. If you like your 2400, the $200 is probably worth it. I wouldn't add a G3($300-500) on top of the repair cost, not with iBooks under $1000. Thought you could drop a 20GB drive in there at the same time for the cost of the HD, maybe $100 max...but only if you really need the room. Conversely you could shop for a 2400 similar to yours. Used 2400s are selling for what, $250-300 or less?, maybe without the RAM or most likely without the bigger HDbut you could then part yours out or sell it DOA for $100. Net cost reduced..and yes it may GLOD also, then you just do it again...as 2400s drop in price. The options vary a bit if you know how to swap memory or HD yourself and it's just the logic board repair you're stuck on. This gets to be a harder question as the 2400 really begins to show its age, but then again it's a killer machine for what it will do for $300 or so. ;-) To really complicate your choices there's a 2400/G3 on eBay with a $500 Buy it Now price. I'm not a big fan of the Newer G3, but this seems like a nice bundle for the price. (Caveat, I have no personal knowledge of the machine) http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=3410476141categor y=14908 Heck I've got three 2400s, two of which I probably ought to sell, just can't get my Garage Sale list built for the mac2400 For Sale page. Well, I did say FWIW :-) Good luck... oh dear, my 2400c finally got the GLOD This is a stock 2400 in very nice shape with 80 mb ram and a 10gb toshiba drive (from ti-book). i don't have a g3 in it. but i do have a 2nd battery and a nice wireless card and a dockking staiton for it DTT , Brian, says he is 99% sure it is the I/O board. [Duo2400] Re: GLOD Journey HELP!
When I plug in an external keyboard the lights on it flash so it seems the computer is gettng power. It sounds like you're plugging in the keyboard while the computer is powered. Try not to do this since it can destroy the ADB chip on the keyboard and the computer, which would be unfortunate if and when you manage to revive the 2400. After trying to reset it with the button sometimes the green light stays on sometimes it stays out. This is what tends to fool people. When the light is on the computer is *off*. The steady green light is a diagnostic condition that means the power manager has been reset. When you hit the power switch and the light goes out, speaker clicks etc. that's the 2400 trying to turn on. This is why the light is on sometimes, off others. Until the computer successfully boots and reloads the power manager code, the light will be steady-on any time the computer is off (unless it loses all power of course, including the backup battery). -- Marc Sira | [EMAIL PROTECTED] If you can't play with words, what good are they? -- Duo/2400 List, The friendliest place on the Net! Been there too... Check Sydney Ho's excellent article on GLOD (I thought I had kept it, but any search engine will unearth it). A long disconnect of everything - battery and ac power - can help, but follow the instructions for a l-o-n-g reset afterwwards. Sometimes PRAM batteries go boink, but you must open the 2400 to replace it. (If you have too I think I have one spare that I bought I replaced mine in Dec.) And finally - if your board is bad DTT can help, for a fraction of what Apple would love to charge you. Good luck! -tobias. Hi Joel, Tobias and the rest, And what's your advice I should do? It sounds like the motherboard. One thing is to send it to DTT... I did send my 2400 to DTT from germany 3 years ago and let them swap the motherboard. No complaints until now ... The repair was around 180$, shipping a lot more (transatlantic), but it still was worth it. No other chance in Germany/Europe so far. And Apple wanted to charge me $ 600!!! [Duo2400] Re: GLOD: need advice, please
The options I can think of in my current state of shock are: - sending it to Apple, which will set me back at least $330 (ouch!) - trying to sell it unrepaired - finding a used board (are there any out there?) Are there any other options I'm missing? And what's your advice I should do? I too was a victim of GLOD, and finally sent the computer in to Apple, who replaced the motherboard (I think it cost $400). It returned, worked like a charm, *but* once the warrantee for the work expired (perhaps 6 months? It was a while ago and my memory's foggy) GLOD returned, growing ever worse until the computer became impossible. Not a happy story I'm afraid... and perhaps not typical, but I'd advise against sending it in to Apple. Clearly their repair does not really solve the problem. One thing is to send it to DTT...despite a couple complaints from fello listers, they just installed an new IO board on my 2400 for $180 plus shipping to and fro... Hi - my 2400 (stock) developed GLOD a week ago while being on battery power, and I need listers-advice please. I read Sydney's article on what to do in such case, was able to reset the 2400 twice for a short time (a few minutes first, then for about 30 min, running Norton, rebuilding DT, resetting PRAM and Power manager), but in the end it showed GLOD again. I brought the machine to a good local shop, they found and installed a new PRAM battery but told me just now that it still has GLOD and is in need of a new motherboard from Apple. I told them to hold off sending it in for a day or so. The options I can think of in my current state of shock are: - sending it to Apple, which will set me back at least $330 (ouch!) - trying to sell it unrepaired - finding a used board (are there any out there?) Green Light of Death (me thinks the term was created on this list...can anyone remember by whom?) Generally characterized by a solid green light on the lid and a simple clicking sound upon trying to restart. Power management related symptoms. Prognosis and treatment varies in effect and duration. This is a very good summary of how to attempt recovery... http://webobjects.uwaterloo.ca/mac2400/power_reset_by_sydney_ho.htm It's not something you want to have ;-) Over the last two weeks, different members of the list have referred to GLOD or GLOD-like problems. I hate to show my ignorance, but... What does GLOD mean? This is not a word or an acronym I have encountered before in any of my troubleshooting and hacking. The Apple Knowledgebase yields nothing... and internet searches have been largely fruitless. So I appeal to some kind soul who might care to enlighten a newbie on the list. I had a few crashes like this, then the 2400 was refusing to wake up from sleep. My first ever GLOD came from an MSIE 4.5 crash, and since then more than once from MSIE although I'm hard pressed to impute a connection. Interesting...another MS bug??? So I had to reboot from that a few times, now I have a GLOD that just won't go away. I've checked Sidney Ho's advice on mac2400 but that didnt' work. I've got the battery and the AC adapter out now, and I've held that reset button in for like 5 minutes quite a few times. Anyway, when I have the AC adapter in (and the batter out) this is the behaviour of the computer: press and release the reset button - get a little click from the speaker (no GLOD) - press and release the reset button - GLOD - press and release the reset button - get a little click from the speaker (no GLOD) - press and release the reset button - GLOD .. and it just toggles between those two states. What else can I do? I'm open to any suggestions. I think your CPU daughter card is now the prime suspect. You probably experienced declining stability, unexplained screen freezes etc. Try to swap in your old 603e/180 and see if that works. I just finished troubleshooting another overseas lister's 2400 with an IDENTICAL toggling problem. Your I/O board is probably OK and if you haven't hot plugged SCSI or done anything too crazy the MB/fuses should be OK. If I recall correctly, Yannis' problem (requoted by John Tree [EMAIL PROTECTED]) was also a dead CPU. BTW he swapped I/O boards with another lister in Germany and after a while both MBs failed--and were revived when the original I/O boards were rematched to the original MBs. Refer to my discussion in that (requoted) post originally made maybe 18-24 months ago? That was the verification of my own experience. Sidney Ho -- Duo/2400 List, The friendliest place on the Net! [Duo2400] Re: GLOD: new variant?
Sounds like what eventually happened to my 2400. Mine however was not charging the battery... there was a big X through it. I eventually had to have the IO board replaced at DTT ... about $130.00 (not including shipping the book there and back). If you could find an IO board in you area and put it in yourself that would be cheaper. (I couldn't find one) Once that was replaced I had no more GLOD. There maybe other possible causes, but that was my story. Good luck, Willie Shaun Krislock wrote: Anyway, when I have the AC adapter in (and the batter out) this is the behaviour of the computer: press and release the reset button - get a little click from the speaker (no GLOD) - press and release the reset button - GLOD - press and release the reset button - get a little click from the speaker (no GLOD) - press and release the reset button - GLOD .. and it just toggles between those two states. -- Duo/2400 List, The friendliest place on the Net! [Duo2400] Re: GLOD: new variant?
What else can I do? I'm open to any suggestions. I recall seeing an extended version of Mr. Ho's advice on the list a while ago, but was not wise enough to save it. Does anybody have that? Or any other advice? I have had the same experience and tried everything as well as leaving with no batt and AC for a week and dismantling reseating everything. I eventually gave in and sent it to DTT who fixed it and it has been fine since (6monts aprox) Below is what I have saved. Sorry for such a big post (of course when you get a GLOD situation you cant reach what you have saved on the subject!!) --- all below this line is from others-- Hi Yannis, Switzerland calling. Here are the first series of steps to try, assuming your hard drive or emergency floppy will otherwise bootup. 1. Press Power Reset Button down for 40-50 secs. Repeat 6-8 times with battery out, AC out. If no go try with AC plugged in. Probably the green light of death (GLOD) comes on immediately and stays on as soon as you release the button. This is more or less by the book. 2. In case Step 1 doesn't work, without taking the 2400c apart, pull battery, pull AC power, and let sit hours until GLOD goes out. Reset Power Manager for 40-60 sec. You should not get any green light as everything should be (nearly) completely discharged. Then reconnect AC only (you must have a reliable power supply without frayed wires) and press power button for a normal restart. 3. In case Step 2 doesn't work, without taking the 2400c apart, pull battery, pull AC power, and let sit 2-3 days after GLOD has already gone out. I have come to suspect that the PRAM batteries can hold a residual charge, not strong enough even to light the green diode, but strong enough to maintain corrupted PRAM for quite a while longer that one would think. If this still doesn't work, at least to get to a boing, the problem is likely hardware related. Here a loose screw or loosened ram card would be the least of the problems but yours seems more serious. If the screen lights, even with a sour Mac, or blinking ?, we're into a different set of (most likely software) problems. It is important to know if you get a boing chime, or if the screen even lights. FWIW, I've thought at least 2-3 times (total) I've had serious hardware problems on two different G3 upgraded 2400s, including dead MB, G3 or PB, but these always (so far) turned out to be something else. I've found the 2400 is exceptionally sensitive to PRAM and software corruption but this takes some careful and patient, repetitive sleuthing. As the 2400 is unsupported in Europe, and our airline luggage highly restricted, resurrecting dead 2400s is a matter of serious survival. And, Tobia Kaiser wrote: -- Having just survived my FIFTH green light of death, I now feel like I can put in my $.02. I have tried the method of removing all power, etc. but have found those to be somewhat unreliable. For my last two green lights, I removed the battery, plugged in the power adapter, hit the reset button for 30 seconds, and Voila! Chimes! This has now worked twice without a hitch, so I can at least recommend you try it. Or, at the very least, add it to the list of methods that MIGHT work. Best luck. Dave -- Seeing ever more 2400s bite the dust on list, I'll come in from shadows in the form of a generic reply to various death symptom problems posted on list, based on some empirical discoveries I've made over the years. I use a primary G3/320-112/30gb and a backup G3/240-80/20gb, both on OS8.6 (I'm definitely not a fan of OS9). Since I don't live in the Apple delimited PB2400 service areas of USA or Japan, I must have some way to keep at least one active. I have, on several occasions, thought one or the other of my 2400s was dead and beyond repair. Each time I've brought them back (so far). Each 2400 has been apart numerous times. In fact I left my G3/240 in pieces on the shelf for more than 6 months before fixing it some 18 months ago, just by re-assembly including a totally drained PRAM battery (which cleared the corrupted Power Manager which repeated resets of every duration failed to resolve). It's clear that the 2400 is an EXTREMELY sensitive machine. It takes very little to have a 2400 go into a terminal green light of death or no light click of death or other troubling and increasingly terminal symptoms. Once, surfing with Explorer resulted in a freeze and the subsequent reboot led to increasing corruption until, eventually, I got the green light of death. Even transporting my computer in a car in sleep mode has resulted in a no light click of death situation--more than once. I'm puzzled as to why. Another time, just a routine reboot under AC power on my G3/320 resulted in ever deteriorating symptoms of terminal death, giving every sign of a power board failure, or worse, and quite different

Both times after exhausting all other possibilities and getting a lot of advice from this list, I also eventually sent my 2400 to DTT and they replaced the motherboard. The reason I mention this is that I am not very happy with the way my first two motherboards only lasted about two years each! That is part of the reason I am pretty set on getting an iBook--I just do not want to have to replace mine again. Maybe I've been extremely unlucky, or maybe I do something that fries the motherboards, but I just thought you might like to know that there is a *possibility* that sending it to DTT to get fixed might not be a permanent solution. BTW, I never upgraded to G3, so I had the original processor, etc. Maybe the G3 ones are better? (Only speculation.) Hope this helps, and good luck!
