RE: [DX-CHAT] New Q Signal Need
What say CW Ops - can anyone come up with a better one ? On SSB, Is the frequency is use ? - that's easy. We CW guys need something more fitting than QRL or QRZ ! Larry - K4WLS Most of us use simply QRL ? which seems to work. 73 RAG Ragnar Otterstad LA5HE JW5HE OZ8RO located in Telemark - Home of skiing. Take a look at : www.visitTelemark.no for more details. Larry.how about QBY?Is the freq busy? 73 NormK1AA - Original Message - From: Larry, K4WLS [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [DX-Chat] [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, September 09, 2003 1:06 AM Subject: [DX-CHAT] New Q Signal Need Would someone at ARRL who is in a leadership position take the following for action, pass it through the hallowed halls, under that curved piece of wood, and promulgate in the right direction. Oh, Wayne Mills, what say OM ? We CW Ops have needed an appropriate Q Signal for years for Is the frequency in use ? QRL ? - Are you (your station) busy (sending/receiving traffic) ? does not fit. QRZ ? - Who (what station) is calling me ? does not fit. I though about QFU: F - Freuency, U - use. That does fit, but well we CW Ops know that at times (especially in unruly pile-ups), we hear all too many FU's. So...What about QFB ? - Is the Frequency Busy (in use) ? What say CW Ops - can anyone come up with a better one ? On SSB, Is the frequency is use ? - that's easy. We CW guys need something more fitting than QRL or QRZ ! Re: [DX-CHAT] New Q Signal Need
I think this is one of those situations in which a literal translation is not the best real life meaning for QRL... if you've ever used one of those translators used to go from one language to another, then you know that what is actually said and what is actually meant can be two entirely different things. At this stage in the game I think it would be counterproductive to add another Q sign to the list...we have enough people who don't know the most commonly used prosigns, whereas most of the radio ops who operate CW on a larger scale know that QRL now implies Is the frequency in use? or The frequency is in use. If you look in one of the newer editions of the ARRL license manual, in fact, QRL is defined as such (an example is the Now You're Talking manual, 3rd edition). Of course, there are those who simply send a ?, but it gets frustrating because there are several meanings to this as well...who is on this frequency? , is the frequency in use?, say again?, what's your call?, etc. Let's work on getting more operators on CW rather than muddle up something that, in my opinion, really doesn't need to be made into an issue. 73, Bridget, KS4YT I can't do any literary work for the rest of this year because I'm meditating a lawsuit and looking around for a defendant. --Mark Twain Subscribe/unsubscribe, feedback, FAQ, problems http://njdxa.org/dx-chat To post a message, DX related items only, [EMAIL PROTECTED] This is the DX-CHAT reflector sponsored by the NJDXA http://njdxa.org

Re: [DX-CHAT] New Q Signal Need
The long established practice for checking a frequency on cw is to send the letters I E Perhaps one of the really OTs can provide the history for this. The letter C in response means yes. 73, Steve WB6RSE Subscribe/unsubscribe, feedback, FAQ, problems http://njdxa.org/dx-chat To post a message, DX related items only, [EMAIL PROTECTED] This is the DX-CHAT reflector sponsored by the NJDXA http://njdxa.org
Re: [DX-CHAT] New Q Signal Need
That is rather interesting as the letters "I E" with a smaller space between the I and E mean "C" in the old American Morse. Actually, QRL? implies the QUESTION is the frequency in use?' and QRL implies the STATEMENT the frequency is in use a subtle difference that has not registered with a LARGE number of operators. I like the .. . or ? idea. Much less interference is created by those procedures.
