Re: [DX-CHAT] TU2T qsl's?

2012-02-01 Thread John Carobine - WB8RFB

I donated via PayPal on December 6, 2011 using OQRS.  No cards received but in
a response to an inquiry I sent last week, I was told cards were sent (no date
given) and if I hadn't received them in the next 15 days, I was to contact the
QSL Manager.

Re: [DX-CHAT] Up

2011-10-23 Thread John Carobine - WB8RFB

Logic dictates that the former rather than the latter is the case.  I think
we've all forgotten a time or two to engage the second VFO for split operation,
but the light bulb usually goes on in just a few minutes or less.  The current
trend of calling on top of the DX seems to indicate there are more PC programs
doing the work than engaged minds.  The operative question is how to educate
them.  Whatever that answer might be, it will also involve changing their
attitudes.

Do we think there are just an entire generation of DXers out there who are
using CW programs and can't actually copy CW???  I can't think of any other
explanation.  Up isn't hard to figure out.  Or do they just not know how to
use their radios??

Re: [DX-CHAT] Logbook of World

2006-03-24 Thread John Carobine - WB8RFB
I've been licensed for nearly 35 years and only took
up chasing DX seriously about two years ago.

In my situation, LoTW is an indispensable tool for me
to get beyond the basic DXCC award. At roughly $3.00
each (sometimes more) to snag a confirmation, having
the choice of being able to get a card, use a LoTW
confirmation, or get both is wonderful.

Simply put, my budget does not support mass mailings
for all the entities I need to achieve 5 band DXCC
just as one example. When I work a new one, I DO like
to get a card, but after that, for other bands and
modes, a cost-effective LoTW confirmation is just
fine.

I have confidence that any remaining growing pains
with LoTW will be ironed out, but my overall
experience with it has been nothing short of positive.
The QST article published about a year or so ago on
how to set up an account was just the guideline I
needed to get me started. If there is any way to
encourage more DX stations to sign up and submit their
logs, I'm all for it. Perhaps some kind of incentive
offered by the League???

[DX-CHAT] LOTW Ideas for Incentives

2006-03-24 Thread John Carobine - WB8RFB
Bernie - W3UR,

Thanks for your comments and also the challenge you
threw out the the group.

What if the ARRL were to Meet You Half-Way?

If the first 25 QSO's confirmed in LOTW for the basic
WAS award were gratis for X amount of time, perhaps
that would be a good incentive to get the DX logs
rolling in. Or some variation of that?

As to your comments about contesters - I suppose I'm
guilty as charged because I figured it's a quick way
to get some of the more readily available DX entities
out of the way while working on DXCC awards.

Doing it that way actually worked as an incentive for
me. I can be found tuning around and checking spots
during some very late and/or early morning hours on a
lot of non-contest days too. For peanut whistle
stations like mine, it's often the only way to have a
good chance of snagging some of the rarer ones.

Although it's only anecdotal, in reference to your
thoughts about methods to log contacts; I use a
software logging program and am nearly 58 years old.
I find it very easy to work with, uploading to LOTW is
a snap, and you can see what your progress is just by
logging into LOTW occasionally and view how many more
confirmations have occurred since the last time you
checked.

I can't wait until propagation improves with the next
sunspot cycle because even with low profile wire
antennas in these conditions, I'm still working DX.
That's exciting in and of itself.

As to bureau returns, my experience is mixed. I've
sent out lots of cards, some going back many years,
and have a return rate of maybe 60 percent or a bit
more. My personal experience is that contest stations
are near the low end of my return percentage when it
comes to getting a card back. Thus, LOTW seems to
help greatly in that regard.

I'm all for any incentives that will encourage more DX
stations to send in their logs and help us DX
neophytes boost their counts. We all win in the end.

[DX-CHAT] QSL Route Needed

2006-03-18 Thread John Carobine - WB8RFB
I worked 5B/KC7RVN during the ARRL I'ntnl CW DX
contest on 18 February 2006.

However, my card to KC7RVN's stateside address was
returned as undeliverable; moved, left no address.

I found out that the owner of that callsign is RW9UP
but QRZ.com and Hamcall websites each have a slightly
different address for him in Russia/Russian
Federation.

Anyone know the correct route?

Thanks - need his 5B card for a new one here.
