Re: [DX-CHAT] On-Line Logs My 2 cents worth...

2008-03-18 Thread Ronald Loneker Sr.
Worked a previous Ducie Island operation and sent for qsls. Cards came
and my 12M CW qso marked NIL... Manager said he found KA2DZS not BZS in
the log.
Wow! the op sent BZS and now I'm not in the log.. Emailed the manager
and he said he would send a qsl with KA2DZS logged on it. I explained
that KA2DZS was a Novice class op who's callsign expired in 1995 but to
no avail.. Sure wish they had an online log, I would have tried to work
'em again on 12CW..
Sure was a pleasure to work this operation on 12CW and 10 thru 160 and
RTTY and see my callsign in the log for real. Just one dit did me in
the first operation
Here is the best one yet.. I saw on the cluster VP6DX on 17RTTY 17.110
QSX down but had no copy on my screen at all. I did see T32YC calling
CQ QSX down 1 and called him about ten times before he faded into the
noise with no luck... Half hour later VP6DX is chatting with a W5 who is
apparently related to the operator.
After they sign off VP6DX sends qrz up. I go up 5 and call and he sends
back KA2BZS we worked before QRZ Wow, I worked the guy and he didn't
even tell me what time ;-) He must have picked me out down trying to
work the T3 station. Managed to work VP6DX 2 days later after sending
First qso I know of

Was in the online log the next morning though...
Isn't this a fun hobby??73/DX.. Ron .

As a certain fictional television character used to say,
Fascinating.

The charge over the alleged misuse of the club callsign for the
DXpedition
is probably the most serious complaint. But as meticulous as
Martti usually
is on planning his jaunts, I find it hard to believe that this
detail was
overlooked. And, of course, nobody's perfect, so it may have
been a true
 oversight on his part.

I wondered about that myself. As you said, Fascinating!

But... was a license issued, and if so, what call was on it? If
FJ/OH2AM

one of the things the DXAC and DXCC desk will get to iron out, a
task I
 don't envy them.

I was under the impression that as a CEPT country, anyone from

Having said that... I've got to tell you, gang, that this is one
of a string
of disturbing precedents that we've seen over the last few
years. Sort of a
DX'ing version of NIMBY. Recall all the complaints from the HP
hams over
the H8A trip a few years back, for one (specifically over the
actual call on
the license)? And there have been others along the same lines,
which many
of you know much more about than I ever will.

I can't blame some of the resident FJ hams from feeling that
their triumph
got trumped, that their own plans to inaugurate the new entity
in their
own way got pulled out from under them. Under similar
circumstances, I
might feel the same way. But whatever happened (I ask
rhetorically) to good
 sportsmanship?

So where are they? Why aren't they doing a similar operation when
they
know how much in demand the entity still is?

Exactly.

HERIK MAUDIT-LARIVE
63 RUE DES PALMIERS
LE TAMPON 97430
FRANCE

No mention of Reunion Island is key because mail to the above address
goes via France instead of via some African countries where the mail
is pilfered. That is not Herik's fault but the fault of the person
who does not follow the published address exactly. 97430 is the
French Zip meaning mail is redirected (securely) to Reunion. If you
use this address and include appropriate IRCs or GS, you should get a
card with no problems.

I got cards from Herik for both 80m and 160m using the above and he
also helped me get a card from FR7BP/T (now SK) for an old 10m QSO in
1980. Herik is a good guy but don't blame him if you cannot follow
his QSL directions.

Whoever said Herik does not work CW is wrong. I worked him on 160 CW
from both Colorado and NC. He was quite active on 160 just a few
years ago.

73, Bill

Bill,

Many of us got QSLs from Herik after repeated attempts and trying
every trick in the book. A few got it the first try. We were well
aware of the via France issue. There just were too many who didn't
get a response for it to be explained away by mail pilfering. When
you mentioned poor QSLer in the 1990s, *everyone* rolled their eyes
and muttered FR5DX. He had the worst reputation for returning cards I
can ever recall.

You were lucky to get the cards you did, and maybe because they
were 80 and 160 he treated them special. I don't know. All I do know
is that the top dog DXers of the day who knew all the QSLing tricks to
minimise pilfering, etc. each had their FR5DX horror stories. I know,
because I was there and I remember it well.

For some reason, Bill took umbrage (no, he was REALLY PO'd) at my
forwarding his quite reasonable response to my eMail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
in this reflector. I didn't see anything personal, nasty or even
defensive in his reply to me, and I posted it to the Reflector in its
entirety, without comment one way or the other.

Of course, I sent my original question to the LEAGUE, and not to Bill
personally. Since the LEAGUE is OUR association, I didn't give a
second thought to printing the LEAGUE'S response to this question and
subsequent discussion here.

In fact, some of you have since privately eMailed me thanking me for
publishing the League's response.

Apparently, I should have been more discreet and paraphrased the
response instead of quoting it.

My apologies to Bill for, if nothing else, bringing him into this
discussion.

Additionally, because of my many years of professional typesetting
experience, I have also sent Bill a few suggestions as to how MUCH
more data may be fit into less space. I have never seen any Yearbook
that didn't list the members of the class, BTW.

I'm done with this subject. Bill can ream me out personally the next
time I bring a batch of cards up to Newington (hello, BS7H).

Boris, I think this one is the proper one for this situation:

a) Mixed (general type): Contacts may be made using any mode since
November 15, 1945.

You can't get credit for your phone DXCC or CW DXCC, but you can
get credit for mixed. Cross mode CW/Phone counts as any mode.

Good to know. I was really itching to call HZ1IK on CW last night
when he was coming in well on phone on 7080, but after reading the
cross-mode doesn't count for DXCC comments around here, I held back.

Next time ;-)

By the way, cross mode CW (me) to SSB (big guns) works really well on
VHF since all I have is a 5 element yagi at 9m high on the chimney and
50 watts...

Dan

Dan,

Point 4 of the Basic Rules says that Except as permitted in Rule 1, cross-mode
contacts are not permitted for DXCC credits, I see it as cross-mode QSO's are OK if
before 01-Oct-1981 and not OK at all afterwards. I might be wrong, but at least I am not
making cross-mode QSO's myself :-)

Good luck on HZ.
