[DX-NEWS] PIARA Ducie update 0420Z 21 Nov

2001-11-21 Thread DRBILL

For Immediate Release

I just spoke with Mike K9AJ operating for the QTH of Dave VP6DB on
Pitcairn Island and he said that everyone is fine and back on land.
Between the rough seas and having to shut down the diesel engines to
clean the fuel filter every few hours it was just too risky to attempt a
landing. Mike and Vince K5VT are both medical doctors and will be
making themselves available tomorrow as the number of doctors on
Pitcairn just went from zero to two!- DRBILL K6GNX Ducie Pilot

re: JT cards.

It's a crap shoot. Sometimes you get answered and other times not. It takes
ma an average of 3 tries for each JT QSL received. I know they answer QSLs
if they receive them BUT I believe it's the mail thiefs that are the
problem in JT-land (similar to Russia now)!

I have had almost 100% return from JT, (5 bands), by using "Via Japan" on
the address. Otherwise, I believe JT mail is routed through Russia.

George,

The ship is having weather and landing problems at S. Orkney so they may
just go directly to S. Georgia.

Let's hope they don't have the same problems there.

Mike,

I've sent most of my JT QSLs with via Japan on the envelope. While it may
help, it's no guarantee and many still never make it! I have tried
registered mail and, although it's expensive, THAT DOES WORK!

[DX-NEWS] ARLP048 Propagation de K7VVV

2001-11-21 Thread W1AW

SB PROP @ ARL $ARLP048
ARLP048 Propagation de K7VVV

ZCZC AP48
QST de W1AW
Propagation Forecast Bulletin 48 ARLP048
>From Tad Cook, K7VVV
Seattle, WA November 21, 2001
To all radio amateurs

SB PROP ARL ARLP048
ARLP048 Propagation de K7VVV

Because of the short work week and ARRL headquarters schedule, this
bulletin will arrive early and without the solar flux, sunspot
numbers and geomagnetic data at the end. This is because the
reporting week runs Thursday through Wednesday, and the data for
Wednesday isn't quite available yet. Watch for it in the next
bulletin.

N8II reported the best European 6 meter opening of this solar cycle
occurred on Friday, November 16. Jeff is in West Virginia in grid
FM19, and said he worked 117 Europeans from 1340-1728z. He said
British calls dominated, but he also worked as far east as Poland
and Bulgaria. Europeans were working as far west as Ohio, Michigan,
Arkansas and Texas.

It has been a quiet week, with no big geomagnetic upsets. The most
active day was Monday, when the planetary A index was 16 and K
indices went as high as 4. Solar flux and sunspot numbers have been
declining.

The latest projection calls for solar flux of 180, 175, 170, 170 and
175 for Wednesday through Sunday, and planetary A indices of 10, 10,
10, 8 and 8 for those same days. Although the forecast is for
moderate A indices, there is a chance that sunspot 9704 could emit
some earth-directed explosions in the next day or two.

Early Sunday morning I witnessed a wonderful Leonids display. We
rose at midnight local time, and drove east of Seattle to search for
a dark spot for viewing the meteor shower. We didn't have any VHF
gear, but were determined to take advantage of a rarely seen clear
Northwest night. At Rattlesnake Lake, about 32 miles east of Seattle
on I-90, the road was completely packed with cars and people,
resembling an Independence Day evening in the city.

Armed with the GPS and laptop, we finally drove high into the
Cascade Mountains and up a Forest Service road west of Snoqualmie
Pass near the Alpine Lakes region. We parked at a trail head where
many others were gathered in the dark to witness the display, and
lay on the ground until 4:30 AM local time, in awe at a sky lit with
meteor trails. Returning to the city, we could still see meteorites
streaking across the sky at 6:00 AM, just before sunrise.

[DX-NEWS] PIARA Ducie update 22Z 21 Nov

2001-11-21 Thread DRBILL

For Immediate Release

The PIARA Ducie Island team will not operate CQWW this weekend from
Pitcairn. Because of the diesel problem that necessitated a dozen stops
to clean the fuel filter just on the trip back to Pitcairn alone, it was
decided that it would be prudent to head back to the Gambier Island this
evening. They should depart about 0100Z 22 Nov.

[DX-NEWS] Working low bands from the West-Indies

2001-11-21 Thread ragnar otterstad

Listening to W0YK/6Y5 this morning on 80 CW inspired
this:

Some of the fellows who are operating low bands from
islands in the West-Indies are neglecting to work
split. This is very counter-productive. Nobody here
can hear who they are coming back to, as they are
covered up by strong EU signals calling. Some people
seem to be calling without even hearing the DX station
! and some make LONG calls !
So gents,if you go on a DXpediton please QSX 2-20 kHz
up, say so frequently and PSE send your own callsign
often, preferably after each qso.

73 and have fun

[DX-NEWS] [NJDXA-L] Bri- Ann's St Martin 2001

2001-11-21 Thread Brian - KF2HC

Don't forget Ann and I will be active from French St Martin Nov 26 through
Dec 2. The first station should be up and running by dinner time Monday.
Second station later that evening or the next morning. Plans are for CW &
SSB on 40m thru 10m with attempts at 6m using wires. Most of our operating
will be mornings and evenings. Be sure to spot us on the cluster. Score
special bonus points if you work FS/W2AZK CW.

One of our antennas this year will be a Force-12 Sigma 5 courtesy of Mike
Crawford's Antennas Plus (shameless plug). The Sigma 5 is a vertical dipole
that covers 20m thru 10m. I used it from Maine a few months ago and it
kicked butt. Please let us know what you think if we work you with it.

Have a great Thanksgiving. See ya from the sunny side.
