[DX-NEWS] Question About VK License Received Today?

2002-09-30 Thread Harry Hodges

Hi All,

This is for our VK brethren.

Received my VK license today for our trip to South Pacific and Australia in
Dec 02-Jan 03. We'll be in Sydney, NSW the whole time we are there.

The callsign issued to me was VK9YOO, good for a year. Was this a typo -
should this be VK2 or are VK9s being issued to visitors. Suggestions? Email
to ACA? Don't want to arrive there and do the wrong thing. VK9YOO/2? What?

73, Harry

Hi Bob, I am not set up to post to the reflector, just
read it.

KJ6OW is NOT the manager for any stations. HE IS a MAILDROP
for some EZ
Turkmenistan stations. A mail drop requires an SASE and
$1-$2 for mail
costs between countries. Registered mail is used by KJ6OW
both
directions. Submissions without SASE and $$, go in the
trash. No free
rides for registered mail costs.

Thanks,

[DX-NEWS] VP8GEO Video

2002-09-30 Thread Jennings

James Brooks 9V1YC does it again with his great video of VP8GEO. This was
the second of the two DX hot spots the “microlite” DXpedition went to earlier
this year. His video of Thule, VP8THU impressed me with
the stark coldness of the island and the extreme conditions the group endured.
This video of South Georgia tells the story of a
beautiful Island polluted by the six derelict whaling
stations and the whaling industry earlier last century. This is a great effort
by a team of very experienced DXers to put a rare DXCC entity on the air and
bring some of the excitement back into DXing. Light equipment and small antennas
combined with some of the world’s best DXpedtioners insured that VP8GEO and
VP8THU made it into thousands of logs. The wonderful scenic photography combined
with some brilliantly informed narration by the DXpeditioners makes for 45
minutes of fascinating watching. You actually feel like you are there with them
at the old Husvik whaling station and on the “Braveheart” slogging through some
very heavy Southern Ocean weather.

I have no interest in James’ videos but they are all first class from
VK0IR, ZL9CI, FO0AAA, A52A and
VP8THU. I would definitely recommend them to all armchair DXers.  VP8GEO continues the series and is
available on James’ website at  http://pachome1.pacific.net.sg/~jamesb/index.htm

[DX-NEWS] Hurricane Net agn in operation

2002-09-30 Thread Charles Harpole

Be advised that the Hurricane Watch Net is again in operation on 14.325 and
needs a clear freq, of course.
The HWN collects on-ground observed weather information and sends that to
the Miami Nat. Hurricane Center. The actual on-the-spot weather
measurements are not available to the Center in any other way and greatly
supplement the air flights and other observation technologies. All that
gives us good path predictions.
Thanks for your help. 73,
