Re: [DX-NEWS] Logbook of the World (LOTW) Beta Test Tutorial

2003-07-24 Thread Jim Reid
Ok, gave this a try --- didn't work.

1. Hawaii is NOT in the list of United States,
seems rather odd, so I could fill in neither State
nor County. ARRL form would allow nothing except
a selection from the list from which Hawaii was not
included.

2.  I prepared an ADIF file from my Logic 6 log;
however, I had no idea how to prepare that
I only wanted QSO's from Nov. 6, 1996 to be
selected. So I did the entire log which goes
back to late 1991. Then I used Notepad to
edit the log, which I did by deleting all QSO's
from the long, long ADIF file. So first entry in the
EXORT.ADI file was:

call:59K2GS qso_date:8:d19961217
time_on:6042300 rst_sent:259 rst_rcvd:259
mode:3SSB band:320M dxcc:3:n348
qsl_sent:1Y qsl_rcvd:1Y comment:8DXCCSUB:
operator:4KH7M
notes:21:mKUWAIT|/ABDUL|KUWAIT|
cont:2AS cqz:221 ituz:239 eor

The above seems to be one complete ADIF log entry. There
was nothing else other than a great long list of the above
sort of entries.

So, I proceeded to the place where you do the process
to sign the log; this is where the process stopped.
I was given the message, The data in line 21 is
outside the range specified or some such. It went
away before I could respond. Next thing I was told
was that the program was no longer responding, hi.

Any thought on what to do now, start over or

Re: [DX-NEWS] If you have this on File

2002-12-21 Thread Jim Reid
From the Symantec Norton Virus web site:

  Jdbgmgr.exe file hoax
  Reported on: April 12, 2002
Last Updated on: November 21, 2002 10:24:24 AM

This is a hoax that tries to persuade you to delete a legitimate
Windows file from your computer. The file that the hoax refers
to, Jdbgmgr.exe, is the Microsoft Debugger Registrar for Java.
It may be installed when you install Windows.

NOTE: Recent version of this hoax take advantage of the recent
outbreak of the W32.bugbear@mm worm, and the fact that the
Jdbgmgr.exe file that is mentioned in the hoax has a bear icon.
The actual W32.bugbear@mm worm file is an .exe file and does
not have a bear icon.

The Windows Jdbgmgr.exe file has a teddy bear icon as
described in the hoax...

CAUTION: Jdbgmgr.exe, like any file, can become infected by
a virus. One virus in particular, W32.Efortune.31384@mm,
targets this file. Norton AntiVirus has provided protection against
W32.Efortune.31384@mm since May 11, 2001.

NOTE: If you have already deleted the Jdbgmgr.exe file, in most
cases, you do not have to reinstall it. The following is quoted
from the Microsoft Knowledge Base article Virus Hoax:
Microsoft Debugger Registrar for Java (Jdbgmgr.exe) Is Not a
Virus (Q322993).

[DX-NEWS] QRM on 14.1 NCDXF Beacon --Action

2002-09-26 Thread Jim Reid

Hi,

Recall a couple of weeks ago I asked if others were bothered
by the constant signal on 14100, nearly atop many of the
18 NCDXF beacons on that frequency. It would seem that
action is to be taken. Source of the QRM, per the below
reported note, is in Eastern Europe. Quote of info follow:

Thank you all for drawing attention to this problem. It was also
reported recently by G4FKH. I do not personally monitor 14MHz
regularly so was unaware until I checked the frequency a couple
of weeks ago. However, my rig expired almost immediately (now
away for repair) so had not been able to check further.

Usually the authorities deal promptly with problems of this kind,
and I hope that it will prove to be the case now. I am drawing
the matter to the attention of OK1HH, my Czech contact on
beacon matters, who works for the Czech forecasting service.

Please keep me posted about any developments

 Rob,

Thanks for the report, we have heard from a listener in Hawaii
. who shows this signal being received there as well.

Subject: [NCDXF-beacon] 14.1MHz IBP frequency being
jammed- rogue transmitter in Eastern Europe

To whom it concerns: 14.1MHz IBP frequency jamming 9for past 2 moths or
so). I have no doubt you'll have noticed the persistent (and effective)
jamming of the 14.1MHz IBP frequency, here in Europe it's a real
nuisance. It effectively renders the 18 beacon system useless during the
evenings and at weekends. My own 'home brew' d.f. readings indicated the
transmissions were coming from Yugoslavia...however, official government
monitors pin-pointed the transmitter as being within the Czech Republic
(they obtained a Class A bearing and have contacted the Czech Authorities
so
they can take further action. I've also written to our Radio Amateur
friends
in Prague asking them for their help -as they could be in a worse
position
that IBP users outwith the CR.

A new item will lapper in the November issue of Practical Wireless and I
hope that readers will respond to my request that they ask CR Amateurs
(when
they are in QSO) for their help. Together we can beat this nuisance which
is
neutralizing a truly superb International effort.

Forgive my poor typing -I suffer badly from arthritis affecting my good
arm
 and y artificial one too!
  Regards to everyone.

2130 UTC

It is now gone! At least the QRM'ing signal on 14.1 cannot
now be heard here in Hawaii. At this time yesterday, and
up until a couple of hours ago, was at least S5 as heard out
here.

Maybe the Czech folks have found and silenced the thing,
hope so!

Re: [DX-NEWS] TN to KH6

2002-05-23 Thread Jim Reid

Hola Pere,

And thank you for your note. Still not in the TN logs.

Have a look at the propagation charts on their/your
web site for New Zealand, ZL. You will see the optimum
hours are about 0400 to 0700 UTC. A chart for Hawaii, or
any other of the mid-Pacific Island nations would be very
similar.

Now, the TN team, for the last days are going QRT around
0230 or so UTC, then eating/sleeping until around 0830 UTC
or so. That is they are QRT right through the optimum prop
times for the central Pacific.

As their goal is to give as many as possible a QSO with TN,
do you suppose on at least one day they could go QRT a
little earlier, and be up and operating by 6 AM (0500UTC)
in Brazzaville, instead of waiting until mid-morning ( 9:30 to
10 AM) thier present starting time?

We out here in the Pacific would be very grateful, as the
signals levels through their present operating hours are
just not high enough for QSO's between KH6 and TN.

Thanks for being so helpful, Pere!

Re: [DX-NEWS] QRZ de TN2B TN3W

2002-05-20 Thread Jim Reid

Aloha Pere, You wrote, in part:

Pacific: they will pay special attention tomorrow Tuesday
 on 17 Mhz at 10:00z.

Why?? That is almost the worst possible time for anywhere
in the Pacific: JA, KH6, ZL, VK, or DU !! 1000z is the middle
of the night in the Pacific basin.

1000z is 1 AM in Hawaii!! And the signals on 17 meters are at or
near zero microvolts.

Best times seem to be 0400z through 0530z and the best bands
are 20 meters (best of bunch), 17meters and 15 meters, at least
all as predicted by W6EL's propagation prediction program.
I could hear TN3W yesterday (2230z)on 18145; she obviously never
heard me, as all her returns, when she was QRZ for 6's and 7's
was to the US mainland, not Hawaii, ever. Why, again W6EL
program says that mid-day in the Pacific here is not really any
better than the middle of the night. Above best times are
closer to Pacific evening gray line conditions. Short path
is near polar, also for Hawaii.

For whatever this info is worth.

Is anyone currently printing a decent world ham radio map?

Yaesu, or one of their dealers, has in the past, given
out a very large wall DX map with prefixes. Wonder if
now that they have a new parent company (Vertex Standard,
or something similar) still are supplying this map?
