Bug description:
using ubuntu touch image 82 i see the session init consume about 10MB per
minute as long as the screen is on with Mir.
running the same session with surfaceflinger only consumes 1MB per minute.

in both cases the system starts to swap heavily at some point, making
  the UI unresponsive.

http://paste.ubuntu.com/6196223/ has the top output of a Mir session
after 30min, the UI just got completely unresponsive when this
  snapshot was taken.

http://paste.ubuntu.com/6196332/ is the top output of a surfaceflinger
session where the screen was off for about 10min

apparently the leak only occurs while the screen is on, it seems to be
permanently there but in the case of surfaceflinger it hits less hard.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 800599] Re: OpenGL windows always on top with Unity-2D and fglrx driver

2013-11-04 Thread Ricardo Graça
It seems this was a problem with older Catalyst versions and judging by
the last comments seems to be fixed by now. I no longer have an AMD GPU
so I can't test this, so if anyone else could test it we could move this
bug forward.

Title:
OpenGL windows always on top with Unity-2D and fglrx driver

Status in Unity 2D:
  Confirmed
Status in “unity-2d” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
When running an OpenGL application with Unity-2D (3.8.4.1) there is visual
corruption in certain situations. So far I identified the following problems:
   - if the launcher covers any part of the OpenGL application's window, it
will flicker when appearing and disappearing and may even become totally
invisible (behind the OpenGL window?)
   - dragging a non-maximized OpenGL application's window will cause severe
flicker inside the application itself

My system is Ubuntu 11.04 using the latest 11.6 version of fglrx and I
still haven't tried with the free Radeon driver. Will report back as
soon as I test that. There is no corruption when using normal Unity.

  Steps to reproduce:
  1) open an application that makes use of OpenGL acceleration and can run in
windowed mode (e.g. glxgears, blender)
  2) make sure that the application's window can be covered by the unity
launcher
  3) move the mouse to the top left side of the screen so the launcher appears

  Expected results:
There is no corruption in the areas where the launcher intercepts the
application's window

  Actual results
Visual corruption in the areas where the launcher intercepts the
application's window

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1247793] [NEW] indicator-applet does not show all applets reliably

2013-11-04 Thread BeowulfOF
Public bug reported:

beowulfk:~$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 13.10
Release:13.10
beowulf:~$ apt-cache policy indicator-applet
indicator-applet:
  Installiert: (keine)

500 http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ saucy/universe amd64 Packages

Upon fresh install of 13.10 the indicator-applet did not show the datestamp,
but the applet for the user-settings and logoff. The System-Settings for
showing the clock in the applet area were set to active, but the mask was
greyed out - so the clock should have been shown.
After a restart, the clock is shown in the top right, but the applet for
User-Settings-Logoff does not appear anymore.

This behaviour does not seem to be reproductive in a forcefull manner.
But people are talking about random icons showing up or not on system
startup. Here a link to a german thread about this:

Yes, thank you. These are the versions that are known to have bug
#1239710. I was wrong before: the fix didn't get released with an update
yet, but that should happen soon.

I'm marking this as a duplicate. Feel free to reopen this bug later if
the fix doesn't work for you.

  Hi,
  I'm using Ubuntu 13.04 64 bits. I have a problem with the indicator Date-Time.
I'm using the option Automatically from the Internet to retrieve the hour
for my system, it's works fine on my home network. But when I use a public
network, this function doesn't work properly. It's due to the limited allowed
ports I believe. So what are ports using in the indicator Date-Time for
retrieving the hour?

The most common port on a public network is just 80 (http port)

PS: I'm using a public network all weeks, so that's important for me
because I want to know sometime the hour..

  the system completely unusable.

  1. run Firefox 12.0 in the foreground
  2. hit Alt to bring up HUD
  3. type any text
  4. select one proposal from HUD
  5. wait for unity-panel-service and hud-service to fill up the remaining RAM
and swap space.

This is due to a high number of bookmarks in a user profile

Bug description:
Impact: high CPU/memory usage from unity-panel-service

  Test case:

Open a large image in the GIMP and activate a lot of items from the
global menu. Using shortcuts is enough and faster to reproduce this
bug (I've always used Ctrl+A and Ctrl+Shift+A). Memory usage of unity-
panel-service increases steadily and it uses a lot of CPU shortly
after activating the menu items in a short time.

Regression potential: check that the menus are stable/working as they
  should

  -
Just going about my business on Ubuntu Raring amd64 on an x230 and I heard
the fan kick into action. top showed me that unity-panel-service was consuming
all the free cycles on one of my CPUs. I killed it before my machine
overheated, so I didn't attach a debugger to see why it was totally pegging out
a CPU.

I'm not sure if this adds any context, but I was using a LibreOffice
spreadsheet and I could not insert a table because the menu had lost
it's mind, and then I observed the overly loaded CPU a very short
  while after that.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1102727] Re: Shortcut launcher make bash to not read .bashrc

2013-11-04 Thread Stephen M. Webb
From the bash(1) man page, under the INVOCATION section:

When bash is invoked as an interactive login shell, or as a
non-interactive shell with the --login option, it first reads and executes
commands from the file /etc/profile, if that file exists.
After reading that file, it looks for ~/.bash_profile,
~/.bash_login, and ~/.profile, in that order, and reads and executes commands
from the first one that exists and is readable. The
--noprofile option may be used when the shell is started to inhibit this
behavior.

When a login shell exits, bash reads and executes commands from
the file ~/.bash_logout, if it exists.

When an interactive shell that is not a login shell is started, bash
reads and executes commands from /etc/bash.bashrc and ~/.bashrc, if these files
exist. This may be inhibited by using the
--norc option. The --rcfile file option will force bash to read and
execute commands from file instead of /etc/bash.bashrc and ~/.bashrc.

Note that using the -c argument to bash means it's not an interactive
shell.

In short, according to the clear and explicit documentation on the bash
program, the .bashrc file will not be read under the circumstances in
which you're running it.

For additional discussion on how bash handles its startup files, see [1]
and especially [2].

If you want a command line to stick in your shortcut that works, try

  gnome-terminal -t Python 2 -x bash -i -c python2

Since misunderstandings about how to use the bash shell is really not a
bug in Unity, I am reclosing this bug.

Bug description:
I always had (well, since around Karmic), a shortcut in my
environment, so when I hit ctrl-alt-2, the following snippet would be
executed (or very very similar, now adapted to the python 2/3
  duality):

gnome-terminal -t Python 2 -x bash -c python2

As you can see, this opens a terminal (titled Python 2) which
executes a bash, that executes python2.

Why not make gnome-terminal to execute directly python2? Because as
I'm executing bash, it'd read the .bashrc file that sets the
PYTHONSTARTUP and PYTHONPATH environment vars. It always worked as I
  just described.

After I migrated to Quantal this stopped working. It still executes a
gnome-terminal, ending in the execution of python2 inside it, but
somehow, the .bashrc file is not executed, as the executed Python
  doesn't have correctly set sys.path.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1069762] Re: Volume slider clickable area is moved slightly up

2013-11-04 Thread Stéphane Guillou
Yes, this is what I am referring to. This was my understanding of the bug since
the beginning: the fact that the slider is easily missable at the bottom and
can be dragged when clicking above it.
I adapted the title to reflect the issue better.
It is also noticeable when clicking somewhere on the slider bar: you can click
close to the mute boundary, but clicking in the lower part of the slider zone
does not work.

I am changing the status to confirmed again.

Cheers

** Summary changed:

- Slider click only works slightly above the slider itself

[Dx-packages] [Bug 878627] Re: unity regularly gets confused about Firefox's window

2013-11-04 Thread Chris Kaye
I'm not sure if my issue is related or not, but for me:
Firefox has no triangle at all, to show that it is open.
Neither does it show up in the Alt-Tab list, whatever work space I'm in.
Clicking on the Firefox button opens a new firefox window.

I haven't tried restarting my computer yet though, so that may fix it...

Bug description:
From time to time (I don't know when, it seems to happen at random
intervals), Unity starts getting confused about Firefox's window
  state. Below are the symptoms:-

  1. Firefox, although maximized, no longer has its menu showing up when the
pointer is over the Unity panel. Likewise, its window title no longer appears
in the panel. When the Firefox window is focused and maximized, the panel is
blank where the window buttons and menu or title should be, whether or not the
pointer is hovering on the panel).
  2. The Firefox icon on the Unity launcher shows a filled triangle on the
right side, but an empty triangle on the left side, which seems to indicate
that Firefox's window is focused, although not on the current workspace.
  3. Alt+Tab orders Firefox's window to the back of the list
(alt_tab_bias_viewport = true).
  4. Alt+Grave over Firefox's icon causes Compiz to segfault (I should have
gotten a stack trace; I'll do that next time).
  5. Selecting Firefox's icon from Alt+Tab does nothing.
  6. Clicking Firefox's launcher in the sidebar does nothing.

And here's the weird part: Other application switchers in Compiz, e.g.
Ring switcher, and Scale, work as expected. Scale even properly
detects the workspace that Firefox is on, judging from the [N] suffix
to Firefox window's title. This indicates that the bug is probably not
in compiz, but in Unity or something it uses.

All of the above symptoms are for one issue. The symptoms either
appear all at once, or not at all. The only way to get rid of this
seems to be to restart Unity or the application in question (Firefox)

in the panel.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1248029] [NEW] unity stalls on window resize using hotspot

2013-11-04 Thread Andrew Marsden
Public bug reported:

When resizing windows using the hotspots (i.e. drag to top for full-
size, drag to right for right-half, etc), it generally works fine.

However, if I drag a window to the top hotspot, and release it too
quickly, before the orange border has had time to fill the screen, then
the window will not resize, the orange border will stay almost-complete
and I will be unable to interact with the GUI.

Dropping to tty and back to display blanks the screen, displaying only
the cursor

Replacing unity using tty works, and I can use the interface as normal
from thenceforth, including resizing the window that caused the crash.

I haven't had the problem with Left or Right hotspots, but I don't use
them nearly as much.

I thought the problem was with Chrome, but I've managed to reproduce
(accidentally) using Libreoffice Writer and Libreoffice Calc.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1248034] [NEW] The Restart button in system menu does not make sense

2013-11-04 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

On Saucy, there is a stand-alone Restart button in the system menu.
But when you click it, it brings up the same menu that Shut down will brings.
Furthermore, it will be focusing on Shut down instead of Restart

Maybe these two option in the system should be combined together.
Or at lease the Restart option should be highlighted when the menu was called
by the Restart option.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 982434] Re: Opening the dash causes memory usage to climb dramatically, and never comes back down

2013-11-04 Thread Vincas Dargis
Looks like it's back in 13.10 (Nvidia 319.60) - compiz eats up up to
168-180MB after some usage.

Opening the dash causes memory usage to climb dramatically, and never

Status in Unity:
  Confirmed
Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
This may not be a bug at all, but thought I'd report it anyway.

I am NOT reporting a memory leak - at least, I don't think so. I am
  simply reporting this:

When I start a desktop session, Compiz uses 85M of memory. It stays
there as long as I *do not open the Dash*.

Once I open the Dash - simply pushing the Ubuntu button, and then
closing immediately - the memory usage climbs to ~120-150.

If I go through every page in the Dash and open every sub-page and see
every icon available, the memory usage clibms to ~185M.

Re-visiting the Dash, no matter how often, doesn't cause a further
increase, but I'm not certain the Dash should use ~100M of RAM all by
itself. I'm not sure how much it *should* use, but it just seems a
  bit excessive.
