Bug description:
x11proto-input, libxfixes, libxi, unity and unity-2d in precise needs
updates to work with the new pointer barrier api from x1.14.

  [Impact]
   * Pointer barrier api has changed between 1.13 and 1.14.
(xorg-server-lts-saucy)
   * Modifications in unity and unity-2d are required to support both api's.

  [Test Case]
   * Update all packages.
   * Test pointer barriers on an old xorg-server, they should continue to work.
   * Test pointer barriers on the new xorg-server, they should work.

  [Regression Potential]
    * Low, it enables a separate code path for pointer barriers. The code in
unity is a bit different due to copying the rework from upstream unity and
keeping the old paths for legacy pointer barriers. Upstream dropped the old
paths.

  [Other Info]
    * It's a bit of a hack. The old pointer barrier symbols live in libxfixes,
the new ones in libxi. Because of the overlap some modifications had to be made
to allow both pointer barriers to be included. This works as well as it can.
   * Depending on the queried libxi2/libxfixes versions, old pointer barriers
or new ones are used.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1239710] Re: indicator-datetime or -session missing ~10% of the time

2013-12-23 Thread vanadium
Today, I again have the issue. It occurs 1% or less of the time for me.
I have launcher placement set to all displays. However, I do not
experience the bug to the extend described in the new bug, 1253693,
where apparently no indicaters appear at all. It is just the date-time
indicator that is missing, and it only happens very occasionally. My
specs and the packages have not changed since I reported on 2013-11-20
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/indicator-
datetime/+bug/1239710/comments/36). I am not sure this bug should be
considered completely fixed.

Hi Robert, I linked my changes for gnome-control-center-signon to this bug. You
are welcome to build the packages and add them to your PPA. :-)
Please let me know how to proceed (I cannot merge my changes to trunk because
they depend on unity-control-center).

Apologies if I'm submitting my concerns to the wrong place. I've been
unable to find any mention of accessibility in relation to notifyOSD
anywhere on the web. As someone with ADHD, I find an unskippable 10
second timeout to be extremely disruptive. This is especially true
when there are many notification fading in and out in the corner of my
eye. The notifications might as well take up my whole screen.
That's not an exaggeration and it's not meant to be a snarky insult.
I'm being honest and sincere when I say that the default behavior
makes my computer nearly unusable . . . *for me*. I acknowledge that
I am not the most common user example, but there are accommodations in
Ubuntu for other disabilities. Those accommodation are generally far
more effort to implement than click-to-close behavior or a
configurable time-out. As things are now, I am relying on kludgey,
third party solutions to make my computer usable.

Title:
default display time is way too long and non configurable

Status in “notify-osd” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: notify-osd

The default display time for notification bubbles of 10 sec.'s is too long
and represents the most common specific complaint.
(the #1 complaint is nothing is configurable.

I use 2 sec.'s here, but a reasonable setting for all may be 4-5
sec.'s, or make it a configurable setting (gconf ?

Seeing that notify-osd may be rebuilt before release, (possibly due to
bug #670785), maybe some consideration to adjusting..

[Dx-packages] [Bug 497703] Re: NotifyOSD slow with repetitive notifications

2013-12-23 Thread Vanessa Lee
I think this problem is either related to or compounded by another issue
about timeouts that is unresolved, there is a long standing bug #390508
discussed here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/notify-
osd/+bug/390508

Title:
  NotifyOSD slow with repetitive notifications

Status in “notify-osd” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: notify-osd

When a notification appears one after another the OSD tends to lag and
respond slowly.
For example when I increase volume (from my netbook's volume hotkey) and hold
or repetitively press it, it will respond slowly.

It seems like a similar problem when numerous notifications (that
aren't volume notifications) appear over top of each other and it
waits for the older one to disappear first, then shows the newer one
  later.

Volume and other notifications should not appear as if they popped up
one after another, but rather as if the OSD was one window with
dynamic text (and icons, etc) that change in real time, as
notifications occur, and not wait for the older ones to disappear.

(Also, ideally, clicking a notifcation should take you to the program
it came from, and/or close the OSD pop up {but this isn't really a bug
so i'll go post it on brainstorm as well} )

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1263775] [NEW] Icon won't wiggle at defined intervals if it's been urgent before

2013-12-23 Thread Christopher Townsend
Public bug reported:

With a hidden Launcher, an icon made urgent should wiggle at 1m, 2m, 4m,
8m, 16m, and 32m intervals unless the Launcher is reveled. If an icon
that has been urgent in the past is made urgent again, it will only
wiggle the initial time and then will not wiggle anymore.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1263786] [NEW] Nonsense behavior of scrollwheel over Launcher

2013-12-23 Thread matteo sisti sette
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:
- move the mouse cursor over the launcher
- move it over the icon of an application that has one and only one window open
that is not on front
- move the scrollwheel of the mouse in any direction

Expected behavior: NOTHING.

Ovserved behavior: the window, corresponding to the icon over which the
mouse cursor is, is brought to front; and this cannot be reversed
easily.

Trying it with an icon of an application that has two or more windows open
reveals why this happens:
- move the mouse cursor over the Launcher over an icon of an application that
has two or more windows open
- move the scrollwheel
This will switch between windows of that application, so scrolling up or down
will bring one or another window (of that same application) to front.
This is already annoying, like many other abuses of the scrollwheel that
unfortunately have become widespread (such as: moving the scrollwheel while
keeping the cursor over a tab will switch among tabs in applications that use
tabs).
But even if we accept the annoying
use-the-scrollwheel-for-everything-at-all-costs fashion, only two behaviors
would make sense in this case:
Option A:
  - similar to current behavior (switch between windows of an application) but
ONLY IF there are more than one window of that application open AND one of
those window is already focused.
Or option B:
 - whenever the scrollwheel is on the launcher, scrolling would switch among
ALL existing windows

Both option A and B would be consistent with the widespread scrollwheel
abuse, but would at least make sense, and an unintentional movement of
the scrollwheel causing an undesired window switching could always be
reverted by a countermovement of the scrollwheel in the opposite
direction.

In my situation, I do get some indicators. For example, Dropbox. But I

I don't know why unity-panel-services fails to run when I log in.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1263786] Re: Nonsense behavior of scrollwheel over Launcher

2013-12-23 Thread Stephen M. Webb
What is you reasoning behind your thinking that (a) the scroll wheel
should not have any action in the launcher and (b) the correct action of
the scroll wheel in the launcher is only to switch between application
and not to switch between windows of an application?

When I move my pointer over a multiple-data display element in a GUI, I
expect the scroll wheel to cycle the currently selected or displayed
data in that element. Icons in the Launcher are clearly multiple-data
elements, as they demonstrate by having the decorations displayed when
they provide multiple window selections and actively show on button-2
clicks. For consistency, the scroll wheel should cycle between open
windows just like it cycles between data in other selection elements.
The current functionality makes sense to me for that reason.

Now mind you, I don't expect the current application to be switched
without a positive click, but that's a different story.

will bring one or another window (of that same application) to front.
This is already annoying, like many other abuses of the scrollwheel that
unfortunately have become widespread (such as: moving the scrollwheel while
keeping the cursor over a tab will switch among tabs in applications that use
tabs).
But even if we accept the annoying
use-the-scrollwheel-for-everything-at-all-costs fashion, only two behaviors
would make sense in this case:
  Option A:
- similar to current behavior (switch between windows of an application)
but ONLY IF there are more than one window of that application open AND one of
those window is already focused.
  Or option B:
   - whenever the scrollwheel is on the launcher, scrolling would switch among
ALL existing windows

Both option A and B would be consistent with the widespread
scrollwheel abuse, but would at least make sense, and an unintentional
movement of the scrollwheel causing an undesired window switching
could always be reverted by a countermovement of the scrollwheel in
  the opposite direction.
