I don't think so, since the merge isn't even approved yet.

I think it seems reasonable, but can you outline the plan / timescale
for the a11y fixes that the MP mentions?

Does it share the logo with unity-greeter? We just started having this
generated at build-time, see:

  https://code.launchpad.net/~xnox/unity-greeter/off-the-
grid/+merge/205896

 /usr/share/unity-greeter/logo.png

so you don't need to ship it statically any more.

 status incomplete

[Dx-packages] [Bug 733349] Re: Minimize Application's Windows upon clicking its Launcher Icon

2014-02-21 Thread mnrl
https://launchpad.net/~zxcq14/+archive/minimize-unity-7
This patch works also with ubuntu 14.04 ubuntu unity.
I've created a ppa for 14.04 trusty but new versions of packages released very
quickly.
I can update packages every week.

  mlaverdiere's futher addition:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/733349/comments/2

My suggestion would be to modify the interaction-design/process like
  this (*=my modification proposal/2 cents!):

  1) start it, if it hasn't been started yet;
  *2) restore it, if it is minimized;
  *3) focus the app, if it's started, not minimized and has not the focus yet;
  4) spread windows (of app), if app is focused and has multiple windows open;
*5) minimize it if it is in spread-mode (see 4).

Note that this bug has over 300 comments and several working but
rejected patches. This means that this feature probably will never
land in official Unity! So if you want it, you have to use a patched
  version of Unity.

There is a working patch for 13.04 ( from comment #322,
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-
  design/+bug/733349/+attachment/3573380/+files/minimize.patch ).
Somebody should set up a PPA (and note it here) to make it easy to
  install the patched version.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1283065] [NEW] Use the existing audio stack to play event sounds

2014-02-21 Thread Pat McGowan
Public bug reported:

This merge introduced several new packages in order to produce sounds on
calendar events
https://code.launchpad.net/~charlesk/indicator-datetime/alarms/+merge/204420

We should rather use existing APIs in QtMultimedia or go directly to the media

- allow coordination for audio playback from multiple sources
- support multiple encoding formats

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1283065] Re: Use the existing audio stack to play event sounds

2014-02-21 Thread Ted Gould
libcanberra just wraps around GStreamer and Pulse which are parts of our
current audio stack. It's just small convenience API that we already
support in main. Adding full Qt support to indicator-datetime seems
kinda crazy (it doesn't have any Qt deps today)

Defintiely agree not to add a new large dependency. Please check the media-hub
then for suitability.
I did not see any dependency into gstreamer so was concerned, also added

[Dx-packages] [Bug 974480] Re: Notification area whitelist is obsolete

Just wondering:

Would it be possible to create a new Ubuntu component that makes use of
the new indicator system ... to display stuff that would otherwise go
the system tray?

If the whitelist was retired, Java and Wine would be hard-coded as the
only software still able to use the menu bar as if it was a
notification area, because their developers don't necessarily know
  that Ubuntu even exists.

The work-space switcher icon on the Unity launcher has the same
appearance as application icons. This makes it look like it is an
application and might lead users to expect it to behave like that.

It is not obvious that this is not a regular application icon, but
something else. I suggest to change the icon to reflect this.

If I open (for example) Synaptic non-maximized and tell it to reload
or apply updates, an update window appears for potentially a
considerable length of time. With Synaptic non-maximized, it is
possible to minimize both windows by clicking on the minimize icon in
  the main Synaptic window.

However, with Synaptic maximized, the minimize/close window buttons
disappear from the global menu when the child window is opened.
Because it is a modal popup window, you cannot switch the focus back
to Synaptic. This means you can no longer minimize Synaptic, which is
  a regression.

A workaround would be to allow the application to be minimized from
the unity launcher, eg by making it (like every other
launcher/dockbar) minimize a focused application when you click on its
icon (eg as requested in bug #733349), or by adding a right-click menu
  option to minimize the application.

Location: Global/Local
Visibility: Hidden/Always displayed

Location has been masterfully solved by Trevilño. The second one is just

indicator that you shouldn't add even more comments. Developers have a
tough time to find anything if you post redundant stuff. So please
  abstain from doing that.

  =
Global menu in general (not only in Unity) is very unergonomic on large
screens (see the attached screenshot) because if you have a small window
somewhere near the low right corner you have to move the cursor all the way up
to to panel to reach the menu. I understand why the global menu was used for
the netbook edition (it saves space and most windows are maximized), but since
Unity is intended to be for the desktop edition there should be an option to
switch to the traditional position of the app menu. It would be welcomed by
many desktop users. Please try to find a solution for it that works.

  A commonly suggested solution is:
   [ ] Global Menu on
   [ ] Global Menu off
[ ] Global Menu only for maximized windows
The default is usually suggested as either the first (on) or last (on only
for maximized windows).

  -
  Desired change:

Implement the 'Enhanced Menu' project for 12.10. This project will
address the issue described in this bug and also issues described in
the duplicates of this bus. Note this is the 'official' bug that
tracks the implementation of this project.

The following options will be added to 'System Settings/Appearance':

  ---
  Menus
  Location:Global/Local
  Visibility: Hidden/Always displayed
  ---

Now re-click on menu item, many times takes multiple attepmts, when failing to

Also can occur after using a menu item then attepmting to open a new

gnome-terminal has a setting that intentionally stops Alt grabs for
menus (Edit - Keyboard Shortcuts - Enable Menu Access), which I've
always used to allow me to type Alt-F (and others) in my terminals.
In the past, this always worked great, and I could type Alt-F in, say,
mutt, to change my From address.

As of the latest uploads, I'm now reduced to the awkward Esc-F,
because Alt-F brings up the file menu, no matter how much I wish it
wouldn't. Pretty please fix this regression.

(I assume the same annoyance would be happening on my attempts to use
Alt-[1-0] in irssi, if gnome-terminal had a menu whose shortcut was a
  digit, but thankfully it doesn't.)

2014-02-21 Thread octalman
With update of Feb 17-22, 2014:

All issues have now been resolved, except:

  1. Firefox and Thunderbird can't find a wireless connection, even though one
has been successfully established.. Requests to authenticate appear
repeatedly, from time to time, even though system status indicates that the
wireless connection has been established and is active. This problem first
appeared about the first week of December, 2013 and continues to this time.
  9. Firefox does not automagically restore previous session.
10. Some Firefox windows are restored in the smaller size of another,
unrelated resized window.

Title:
December 2013 updates to 12.04 LTS cause multiple problems

Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
December 2013 and January 2014 updates have caused numerous usability
problems. Some disappear, then reappear. All the following are
  current.

  1. Firefox and Thunderbird no longer find internet connection when
connected wirelessly. System reports wireless connection is
established and working, but neither FF nor TB cab find it. Wired
connection works OK. This problem first appeared in early December
and has continued to date (January 24, 2014).

  2. Booting HP Pavilion dv6 laptop fails when external power is
connected. Boots OK on battery alone. Bug reported. Problem
  appeared after January 1, 2014.

  3. Firefox loses tab history -- it's still there, but inaccessable
  unless I reboot. Long-standing issue.

  4. Right-click no longer works in Firefox. Can't copy or cut-and-
  paste.

  5. After running for more than a few hours, Firefox window frames
become transparent and Firefox no longer works.

  6. When using LibreOffice, screen updates cause brief, but very
annoying, display flashing or blanking. Blanking is sometimes
extended up to ten seconds. (AMD A-8 quad-core processor with 6 GB
  main memory!). Very alarming.

  7. Lost ability to scroll, etc. using gestures shortly after
  January 1, 2014.

  8. Unity magically appearing/disappearing scroll tabs replaced
Gnome's hard scrollbars. That's not nice. I don't like them.

  9. Firefox never, ever restores automagically (though it always did
in 10.04 LTS and does on Linux Mint). This issue has been outstanding
for two years, or more. No biggie, but it's annoying and very
unprofessional. Two bugs reported on this vs. Oneric! C'mon, people.
Surely you can do better than that.

This system is single-boot Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Gnome 3/Unity on an ext4
filesystem, installed about August 6, 2012 and kept up to date.

What happened to the concept that 12.04 was to be a stable release?
This is the most unstable *n*x OS release I have ever used since 1999
  (SuSE 5 through 8, Ubuntu 8.04, 10.04, Mint 13 and 14). This nonsense
makes Microsoft Windows almost seem desirable. I also use Linux Mint
14 on other boxes, an HP Pavilion dv7 and a Dell Optiplex GX620.
None of these issues affect Mint 14, although it is based on Ubuntu
12.04 LTS (Mint 14 has its own issues, but none affect usability like
  these do). Unity sucks stumpwater.
