[Dx-packages] [Bug 1283671] [NEW] 14.04 daily build (2014-02-21): unity desktop crashes on every application start

2014-02-23 Thread Jens
Public bug reported:

I installed the 14.04 daily build from a CD image yesterday to help
testing. Unfortunately, I cannot test anything because right upon
booting, when the desktop appears, every app I start causes about a
minute of freezing (even the mouse pointer freezes) and then a restart
(or complete crash) of the unity top menubar and sidebar.

The only thing in the desktop I customized was the Unity sidebar button
size (in the settings app - to 16 pixels first, then to 24 pixels). But
even the settings app caused this crash before I could use it to change
the settings.

I am writing this in a 640x480 Firefox window without window manager
from within the crashed Unity desktop.

Is this a known bug? I sure hope so. ;)

Fuzzy search on window spread filter is too narrow

Bug description:
  Steps to reproduce:
  - open a terminal, Files window, and Firefox window
  - press Super+W to spread windows
  - type terminal
  - WHAT WAS EXPECTED: the terminal window would not be filtered out
  - WHAT HAPPENED INSTEAD: the terminal window is not listed.

However, if you type firefox, the firefox window is shown because
  the regex matches.

I propose that not only are the windows in spread filtered by title, but also
by
  - application name, e.g. gnome terminal
  - generic name, e.g. web browser
  - application category, e.g. multimedia

This will more closely follow the search patterns in the dash + HUD

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1283702] [NEW] Dash appears instead of Spread when Super+W is tapped faster than dash_tap_duration

2014-02-23 Thread Doctor Rover
Public bug reported:

The bug:
When Super+W is pressed quickly, the Dash appears instead of the Spread. The
fact that W has also been pressed is ignored. “Quickly” means the duration less
then the dash_tap_duration parameter which is found in Launcher tab of the
CompizConfig Settings Manager as the “Dash tap duration”.

Steps to reproduce:
– open CompizConfig Settings Manager
– in Launcher tab, change the parameter “Dash tap duration” to some high value,
say 1000 milliseconds (more is prohibited)
– press Super+W within the duration not more than one second
– WHAT IS EXPECTED: Spread mode should appear
– WHAT HAPPENS INSTEAD: Dash appears

Obviously, this bug can also be reproduced with the default value of
dash_tap_duration (250ms) but with the higher value it's more evident
and easier to reproduce.

Title:
Dash appears instead of Spread when Super+W is tapped faster than
  dash_tap_duration

Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  The bug:
When Super+W is pressed quickly, the Dash appears instead of the Spread. The
fact that W has also been pressed is ignored. “Quickly” means the duration less
than the dash_tap_duration parameter which is found in Launcher tab of the
CompizConfig Settings Manager as the “Dash tap duration”.

  Steps to reproduce:
  – open CompizConfig Settings Manager
  – in Launcher tab, change the parameter “Dash tap duration” to some high
value, say 1000 milliseconds (more is prohibited)
  – press Super+W within the duration not more than one second
  – WHAT IS EXPECTED: Spread mode should appear
  – WHAT HAPPENS INSTEAD: Dash appears

Obviously, this bug can also be reproduced with the default value of
dash_tap_duration (250ms) but with the higher value it's more evident
  and easier to reproduce.

2014-02-23 Thread Sami Jaktholm
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:
0. Have menus to be in window title bars.
1. Open a window that's maximized.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1283236] Re: Alarm is shown with an incorrect time and does not trigger

2014-02-23 Thread Pat McGowan
It seems some layer is interpreting the alarm time being requested as
UTC instead of the local timezone, thereby scheduling it 5 hrs too far
ahead. It looks like clock and the alarm api expect localtime although
this is not explicit in the API doc.

We should ensure that timezone changes are reacted to properly for saved
alarms. Perhaps all alarms should be saved in UTC and converted as
appropriate.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1283798] [NEW] Keyboard layout switcher shortcuts stop working after reboot

2014-02-23 Thread Masoud Pourmoosa
Public bug reported:

HOW TO REPRODUCE
- Add a new keyboard shortcut (in my case, Persian layout) from the keyboard
indicator - Text Entry Settings
- Assign shortcuts for switching to next/previous source (in my case Shift+Alt
L and Alt+Shift R)
- Test the new layout and layout switcher shortcuts to check if they work (in
my case, yes they do)
- Reboot
- Log back in

Bug description:
I installed the 14.04 daily build from a CD image yesterday to help
testing. Unfortunately, I cannot test anything because right upon
booting, when the desktop appears, every app I start causes about a
minute of freezing (even the mouse pointer freezes) and then a restart
(or complete crash) of the unity top menubar and sidebar.

The only thing in the desktop I customized was the Unity sidebar
button size (in the settings app - to 16 pixels first, then to 24
pixels). But even the settings app caused this crash before I could
use it to change the settings.

I am writing this in a 640x480 Firefox window without window manager
from within the crashed Unity desktop.

Is this a known bug? I sure hope so. ;)

Currently, it is possible to right click on the name bar of a window to get
the drop-down menu allowing the following actions:
  - Minimise

  - Move
  - Resize
  - Always on top
  - Always on visible workspace
  - Only on this workspace
  - Move to workspace x
  - Move to workspace y
  - Move to another workspace ...

However, when a window is maximised and the top bar is merged with the
panel, allowing the global menu, there is no way to access this menu,
except going back to windowed mode, thus adding an extra step to
execute an action like moving the window to another workspace.

This is not expected as the panel is already dragable and double-
  clickable.

  WHAT SHOULD HAPPEN:

The top panel's empty space should be right-clickable in order to be
able to access those options as easily as in windowed mode.

Another option, not as good as the first one, would be to add another
drop-down menu in the global menu, that would appear only when the
window is maximised. The advantage would be the ability to use those
actions with the HUD; however, adding a Window drop-down menu would
interfere with apps that already have one, like LibreOffice Writer,
and would probably end up being more confusing.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1283695] Re: LIM breaks double-tap title to maximise

2014-02-23 Thread Treviño
As per design decision, double-click should be disabled on menus by
default.

However, you can actually turn this, setting a timeout on
com.canonical.Unity.IntegratedMenus double-click-wait setting.
By setting that value to something like 100ms (this or 150 worked well for me),
you delay the menu activation for the defined ms, so that you can be able to
click again to get the window maximized. Based on how much fast you double
click you can keep this value lower and make menus faster to show (when not
double clicking).

Unfortunately there's no way other than delaying the menu activation to
achieve this, as we can't predict what the user wants to do :)

  - WHAT HAPPENED INSTEAD: the terminal window is not listed.

However, if you type firefox, the firefox window is shown because
  the regex matches.

I propose that not only are the windows in spread filtered by title, but also
by
  - application name, e.g. gnome terminal
  - generic name, e.g. web browser
  - application category, e.g. multimedia

This will more closely follow the search patterns in the dash + HUD
  search methods.

Title:

Status in Unity:

Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
I have menus set to be in the top panel and not local. When I open geany
(gtk2) and then afterwards VirtualBox (qt), the window titlebar of VirtualBox
initially shows the local menu of geany.
After mouse-over and mouse-out of the titlebar, that local ghost menu does
not reappear again. VirtualBox's menu is correctly exported to the global
application menu.

Bug description:
Back in 11.04 it was decided to go borderless but was reverted mainly because
of unity-2d. Since then users that wish this could easily adjust in metacity-1.
Now that's gone with the unity-window decorator.
Dark windows look bad with the light grey? 1 px. border, particuarly some
video players, gnome-terminal ect.
(I understand that without a border 2 overlaping terminals may be weird but
overall borderless looks better in general use

Or at the least somehow color it something less obvious distracting.

  Open a document in gedit
Wait for panel menu to disappear.
Expose the panel menu either thru cursor or hold alt button

Choose a menu item, About will be fine
Close the 'about' winow, the gedit panel menu remains as long as focus is on
gedit
Move focus off gedit, then back on to geit, panel menu returns doesn't
disappear
A click or d. click in empty space on panel will cause the menu to finally
disappear

[Dx-packages] [Bug 982434] Re: Opening the dash causes memory usage to climb dramatically, and never comes back down

2014-02-23 Thread Jeremie Tamburini
Same story in Ubuntu 14.04
(Unity 7.1.2, Compiz 0.9.11, Intel card, RAM 2G)

Opening the Dash will increase the memory usage of Compiz from 30 MiB to
90~100 MiB.

The system and the applications are working fine.
I didn't experienced any particular problem. just noticed compiz increasing
the ram usage in the System monitor.

Status in Unity:

Bug description:
This may not be a bug at all, but thought I'd report it anyway.

I am NOT reporting a memory leak - at least, I don't think so. I am
  simply reporting this:

When I start a desktop session, Compiz uses 85M of memory. It stays
there as long as I *do not open the Dash*.

Once I open the Dash - simply pushing the Ubuntu button, and then
closing immediately - the memory usage climbs to ~120-150.

If I go through every page in the Dash and open every sub-page and see
every icon available, the memory usage clibms to ~185M.

Re-visiting the Dash, no matter how often, doesn't cause a further
increase, but I'm not certain the Dash should use ~100M of RAM all by
itself. I'm not sure how much it *should* use, but it just seems a
  bit excessive.

Choose a menu item, About will be fine
Close the 'about' winow, the gedit panel menu remains as long as focus is on
gedit
Move focus off gedit, then back on to geit, panel menu returns doesn't
disappear
A click or d. click in empty space on panel will cause the menu to finally

Back in 11.04 it was decided to go borderless but was reverted mainly because

Dark windows look bad with the light grey? 1 px. border, particuarly some
video players, gnome-terminal ect.
(I understand that without a border 2 overlaping terminals may be weird but
overall borderless looks better in general use

2014-02-23 Thread Treviño
2014-02-24 1:05 GMT+01:00 Doug McMahon 1281...@bugs.launchpad.net:
If not 0px then is there any way to be transparent?
Yes sure... If you want to try it you only have to edit the file
/usr/share/themes/Ambiance/gtk-3.0/apps/unity.css to match your
preferences...

Also may be worthwhile to note the current existing borders seem to
cause some issue with compiz place plugin as noted in Bug 1281816

Yes, that's a known issue and I've already fixed it locally.

Bug description:
When installing Ubuntu and selecting Simplified Chinese as the default
language, the default timezone should point to Beijing instead of
Shanghai. Everything in China is referenced to Beijing time. In
mainland China this standard time is called Beijing Time (北京时间)
domestically but it is commonly referred to as China Standard Time
  (CST) internationally.

This seems to have come up a lot in past bugs:

  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/tzdata/+bug/228554
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/517621

  Steps to recreate:

  1) Install Ubuntu and select Simplified Chinese for the language.

  Actual Results:
At the timezone page, the default city is Shanghai.

  Expected Results:
Most Chinese users prefer it be set to Beijing.

It looks as if the upstream tz database needs to be updated for
Beijing for starters, as Beijing is not listed in there.
