Normally, when you press alt-tab, you will be switched to app you've
used last before current app (so you can switch between two apps with
  pressing alt-tab just once).

When using option Bias alt-tab to prefer windows on the current
viewport, if multi-window app is open pressing alt-tab will start
from the same app. So to switch to another app you need to press alt-
  tab-tab. That's really annoying.

  Please fix that.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1004769] Re: Unity alt+tab unclear, improvemet suggestions.

2014-04-09 Thread Rolf Leggewie
I absolutely agree with the problem report. My suggested solution was
to roll the icons and keep the focus smack in the middle instead of
moving focus from left to right - bug 1291790 . Currently, window
selection is pretty horrendous and inefficient.

  Unity alt+tab unclear, improvemet suggestions.

Bug description:
When using alt+tab to switch between many tabs, at a glance, it is
unclear which icon is currently highlighted. When using Alt+tab
shortcut to do a rapid switch - as most people do - I often end up
bringing the wrong programme to focus.

To put it another way, when I hold Alt and hit tab, tab, tab, tab, tab
  - it is unclear what programme will jump to the front when I release
  Alt.

There is two reasons for this.

  1. The current item is marked by a white glow, and the title of the
application is written in small white letters below.

  - my eye is looking at the icons, not the writing below, so in the split
second before I release Alt I am blind to it.
  - the white glow stands out less then brown background around firefox,
the red around settings, the yellow around display, the grey around others and
so on. So in a split second I have to decide if its a glow or a background
colour.

  2. The item after the one currently selected is animated. I want you to try
this for yourself so you can see.
  - Open lots of programmes.
  - Now use Alt+tab to bring the second last item to focus.
  - As you select the 3rd last item, the 2nd last item is animated from a
narrow side on view to full size icon, when this happens it is intuitive to
think you have got the right one, so you release Alt on the wrong one, and have
to go through the whole process again.

I think this is a major look and feel issue with Unity that needs to
be fixed. I find the side listing of programmes quite cumbersome and
since the task bar has been done away with I find myself relying on
alt+tab even more then on gnome.

This could be fixed by an animated enlargement of the currently
selected icon, removing the multi-coloured boxes around unselected
icons, and reducing the visual impact of the animation of the end
icons rotating to full size icons.

  Unity 5.12-0ubuntu1

New keyboard layout changer in Ubuntu 13.10 introduce old-new bug. Any
system or application hotkey witch use char (for example: ctrl+alt+t for
terminal or ctrl+t for new tab in browser) become unfunctional when selected
non-latin keyboard layout.
Hotkeys with F1-12, numbers and other non-character buttons works perfectly.

Window manager hotkeys not affected by this bug. All hotkeys in system
parameters-keyboard-hotkeys-windows works perfect with any keyboard
  layout.

Workaround for some system hotkeys and two layouts (english and non-
latin): rebind all hotkeys in your local layout. For example instead
of ctrl+alt+t use ctrl+alt+τ (greek tau). That hotkey still work with
english layout. If you use english and two different non-latin
layouts this workaround helps only with one of them.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1304864] [NEW] sometimes I'm stuck in exposé view

2014-04-09 Thread Rolf Leggewie
Public bug reported:

sometimes I'm getting stuck in what I think is called exposé view in
unity (have a look at the screenshot). I double click on a program icon
on the launcher and since it has two or more windows open they are
spread out. Then, sometimes, no matter I do, I can't get out of that.
When I move back to the launcher, it is highlighted, I can close
programs from there from the context menu but the exposé view remains
there. I tried hitting Super, Esc and other key combinations but the
only thing I can do is to go to a VT and restart lightdm (ouch!).

Test program to help reproduce the bug

If the root window and all its subwindows are redirected to off-screen
storage by using XCompositeRedirectSubwindows with the update parameter
set to CompositeRedirectAutomatic, some windows fail to repaint
correctly in some conditions.

To reproduce this bug:
(1) ensure that windows are NOT currently redirected to off-screen storage
(2) run the attached test application, or run xcompmgr -a if you have it
installed.
(3) open any regular window, then open a menu window so that it overlaps with
it partially
(4) close the menu window and open it again in another position so that it will
not overlap with the regular window
(5) observe that the part of the regular window that was covered by the first
menu window is cleared and then it's not normally repainted anymore

I can reproduce reliably on a machine running Ubuntu Linux 11.04, which runs
X.org version 1.10.1, with Linux kernel 2.6.24-29-server x86_64
The window manager running is Metacity (with Metacity's own compositor
disabled).

The menu windows mentioned in steps 3 to 5 are those that appear when
right clicking on the desktop. I don't know what is special about them
in X11 terms, but there are no other windows that exhibit this behavior
that I could find.

I could reproduce this bug both on an Nvidia card and on a machine with
integrated Intel graphics.

I guess something weird happens when the window is no longer marked as

override redirect windows in CompositeRedirectAutomatic mode.

Any ideas as to how I can further debug the issue?

Title:
brightness not remembered after screen dim

Status in “indicator-power” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
If I am in a dark room and using the phone, I like to move the
brightness down to the dimmest value via the indicator. If I'm using
an app that requires concentration (eg, playing Sudoku) the screen
might dim even further while I'm thinking (somewhat odd in and of
itself, but this is a visual cue that the screen is about to blank, so
'ok'). If I click within the app, the screen is brightened not to the
value I selected for the dark room I am in (ie, the dimmest), but to
  some other brighter value.

Interestingly, if I adjust to the dimmest setting and let the screen
blank, when I unblank, the screen brightness setting is remembered
thereafter (ie, I can play sudoku, let the screen dim, touch the
screen and then it is at the brightness I previously selected).

What seems to be happening is that the indicator dims the screen, but
the value is not actually saved until screen blank and tapping the
screen after screen dim before blanking resets it to the previously
saved value (ie, not the one I just set via the indicator). Performing
various combinations of setting brightness, dimming, blanking, etc
  seems to confirm this.

UPDATE: I'm not sure that the dimmest setting is actually remembered
after screen blank after all-- I was sure that I witnessed this, but
then last night it didn't appear to be working this way. Maybe there
  is another bug in play

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1250262] Re: Calling EndSessionDialog.Open(Restart) opens the dialog with a focused 'Shutdown' button

2014-04-09 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
As I explained in bug 1156566, the session menu is not the only place
that offers restart: Software Updater and Software Updates settings do
as well, and maybe other places I don't know about. So just removing the
menu item wouldn't solve the problem. The problem is in Unity.

Calling EndSessionDialog.Open(Restart) opens the dialog with a focused

Status in The Session Menu:
  Invalid
Status in Unity:

Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Ubuntu 13.10.

Selecting the power-cog restart should result in the popup
highlighting/pre-selecting Restart so users only have to hit Enter.

Presently users who select Restart from the power-cog menu have to
then use the cursor keys to actually select Restart else a shutdown
  will occur.

It makes no sense to put Restart in the power-cog menu only to have
the popup that appears highlight Shutdown

Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
From time to time, systray disappears with all of its icons, which
were showing OK up to that point. Needless to say, this defeats the
main purpose of apps like Skype or Pidgin.

Strange thing is, if I switch to another desktop workspace
(Ctrl+Alt+Arrows), the systray appears for a split second during the
  workspace scrolling, then disappears again.

I checked several other bugs and neither seemed to be my case. Also, note
that Skype, Pidgin and a few others are whitelisted:
  $ gsettings get com.canonical.Unity.Panel systray-whitelist
  ['JavaEmbeddedFrame', 'Wine', 'Update-notifier', 'Skype', 'Pidgin',
'Evolution', 'Vuze', 'Azureus', 'Azureus2']

Is there at least a workaround to get the systray back when this
  happens?

  Thanks

Using Ubuntu Desktop 12.04.4 LTS 64 bit, ATI Radeon with open source
  driver.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1291362] Re: Apps locked to launcher only launch once per session.

2014-04-09 Thread Colin Law
I am seeing this too after upgrading to 14.04, for example click on Files,
close the window, and clicking on Files then does nothing. Right click Open
New Window still works.
Seems to be a rather serious bug, I wonder why more are not seeing it. Perhaps
it is an upgrade issue.

An application that has been locked to launcher, (including those
there by default) can only be clicked on once per session to actually
launch the application. After that it's unresponsive to clicks,
  although right-click actions work.

Seems to affect all apps, including Files.

To repeat, for any application not already on the launcher bar:

Launch the application using the dash.

Right-click on its launcher icon and select Lock to Launcher

  Quit the application.

Click on its launcher icon. It should launch again.

  Quit it again.

Click on its launcher icon again. It won't work this time. It looks
like dragging would work, but its operation as a launcher will not.

NB: I haven't installed any hacks eg: click-to-minimise. Seen this on
two systems upgraded from saucy to trusty. (One with AMD graphics, one
with Intel, so I doubt that's relevant either.)

Well, we reload the indicators in lockscreen mode, and this might be
slower (although I didn't notice that), however, you can check if the
animation confuses you by enabling slow-animations from CCSM and then
checking what's going on.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1293843] Re: Indicators shift around when going into lockscreen

Sure, just mark invalid/wontfix if you feel that's the correct status.
It's somewhat better now, too.

Bug description:
When I lock my screen, the indicators seem to sometimes shift places

This might be an artifact of the cross-fade between real and

back in the last 1/4th of the time.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1291362] Re: Apps locked to launcher only launch once per session.

2014-04-09 Thread Rachel Greenham
Can you confirm my finding of my last comment, that is:

This happens when the launcher is only on one display of a multi-display
desktop, and when that isn't the left-most display?

there by default) can only be clicked on once per session to actually
launch the application.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1291362] Re: Apps locked to launcher only launch once per session.

2014-04-09 Thread Colin Law
Yes, well spotted, for me it only happens when the launcher is on the
right hand display of a pair. That explains why it is not seen by more
users.

Also it is not to do with having upgraded from 13.10 as I also see it
with a separate install of 14.04 on a different partition on the same
machine which was installed as an early beta and has been updated from
there.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1289820] Re: 'Move to Another Workspace' causes window to disappear

2014-04-09 Thread Christopher Townsend
I've been looking at this and it seems this occurs when setting
ccsm-General Options-Desktop Size-Number of Desktops to some value
other than 1. I'm thinking that setting may not be needed anymore, but
I still need to investigate.

present in any other workspace. It effectively is no longer
accessible, though it can still be killed. Disabling workspaces does
not cause the lost window to reappear, but setting the number of
desktops to 1 in CCSM General Options Desktop Size Number of
Desktops does the trick and the window reappears.

This was on our task list spreadsheet since late in the 13.10 cycle, I

and it could have been done early in the cycle.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1304568] [NEW] Upgrade 12.04 LTS to 14.04LTS Beta 2 lost panel launch

2014-04-09 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Have used 14.04LTS Beta 2 for about a week, it was an in place upgrade,
all seemed well. However this morning starting the system I got the
background but no panel and no launcher. Right click on the screen gave
the settings menu and all settings could be accessed, but still no
launcher or panel.

 I downloaded 14.04LTS Beta2 and made a USB stick, did a complete
install, formatting / but not the other paritions. When restarted
again no panel, no launcher but access to the settings menuis available.

I used to be able to start terminal by using ctrl+alt+t, but that does
not work anymore.

ICannot access anything on the perfectly good screen.

Shutting down by pressing the startup knob and then restarting provides
the sam eproblem.

got the background but no panel and no launcher. Right click on the
screen gave the settings menu and all settings could be accessed, but
  still no launcher or panel.

   I downloaded 14.04LTS Beta2 and made a USB stick, did a complete
install, formatting / but not the other paritions. When restarted
again no panel, no launcher but access to the settings menuis
  available.

I used to be able to start terminal by using ctrl+alt+t, but that does
  not work anymore.

ICannot access anything on the perfectly good screen.

Shutting down by pressing the startup knob and then restarting
  provides the sam eproblem.
