[Dx-packages] [Bug 1299054] Re: resizing loop on high-dpi screen

2014-11-05 Thread Andreas E.
This does still occurs frequently in Ubuntu 14.10 official release with
Unity 7.3.1+14.10.20141016-0ubuntu1.

Some application windows freeze and shrink slowly for 10-30 seconds
while turning the cpu up to 100%. When these windows have reached the
smallest possible size, they remain unusable. When trying to resize them
to a usable size, they continue freezing and shrinking.

  resizing loop on high-dpi screen

Status in Unity:
  New
Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
When the global scaling factor is set to 2, some dialogs occasionally
start changing their window size causing very high CPU activity.

This occurs for example in dconf-editor while searching: It appears
dconf-editor tries to adjust the window dimensions to the size of the content
and reduces the window size until it is unusable. This causes very high CPU
activity and freezes the window content.
It also happens when (then) resizing the window width (→) or height (↓)
afterwards, it tries to revert to the previous window size. However, the only
way to resize the window back so that it doesn't reduce its size is by dragging
the window corner (↓→).

This issue happens also in other applications, for example in apport-
dialogs when expanding the collapsed details view.

This does not happen when the global scaling factor is set to 1. It
could be related to the new window resizing method that updates the
  window content.

No, it does fit. Only when workspaces are enabled it does not work. Take
a look at this screenshot; my screen @ 1024*768:

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1243233] Re: Holding Super key doesn't bring up shortcut overlay.

2014-11-05 Thread Bruno Nova
Like I said, the horizontal size of the overlay does depend on the current
language.
In Portuguese (my native language), the texts are longer and the overlay
doesn't fit (even with workspaces disabled), but in English it fits.

I think 1024x768 should be the minimum supported resolution by the overlay (in
English, at least).
Maybe you should report a new bug (asking the overlay to be made smaller
horizontally)?

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1382548] Re: no warning upon headset plugin

2014-11-05 Thread Ted Gould
They are different values, so it could definitely be that your headset
volume is not at a warning level.

But, the flip side is should we always show a notification in the case
that we plug in a headset? It seems that might be useful as feedback
that the audio state has changed.

The warning works fine for changing the volume when the headset is
  plugged in.

But, if you set the volume to max without the headset plug it in afterward
there is no warning.
I would have expected just a brief display of the warning reflecting the
current volume setting.

FFE: Export data to accounts service

Status in “indicator-sound” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
To support having a user control of the media player and volume on the
greeter data needs to be exported by the sound indicator into the
accounts service so that it can be read by the greeter user. This will
then be used on the greeter to show the relevant data to the user when
that user is selected on the greeter.

A user on the Unity7 desktop today will not see the media players in
the greeter. They will notice that volume/mute changes that they make
while using the greeter will effect their session.

This doesn't work today, but assuming bug 1378920 gets fixed the user
  experience will be:

You're playing a video. You hit the volume up key. The audio of your
program will be reduced, the alert sound will play, and then the
volume of the program will be restored. As you're trying to hear the
program, this goes directly against what you're trying to do.

  Possible solutions:

  - No audio or even visual notifications when multimedia is active
  - Visual but no audio notifications when multimedia is active
  - Visual but no audio when anything but alert is active (phone, alarm, etc.)
  - No change, this is desired behavior

  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Sound#notification: When the primary sound
output changes for any reason except an app request, or when the sound
volume changes for any reason, a confirmation bubble should appear ...
In addition, *if* audio is not currently playing through the
multimedia role, a subtle noise should play for you to gauge the
  change in volume.

Bug description:
A recent change in the interest of security removed access to the
indicators when the phone is locked and the greeter is showing.

This was an accentual change based on a misunderstanding

There had been a plan to support media playback control via the sound
indicator. Without this the user must unlock the phone in order to
simply pause the music or change songs, etc.

  Desired resolution:

  - Revert the change that caused this issue

  - Add a switch to System Settings to enable security conscious user to
switch off Launcher and Greeter access while the phone is locked.
This setting should *always* be off by default.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1389573] [NEW] Update-notifier window invisible in utopic

2014-11-05 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Somehow I ended up with update-notifier not being visible on my utopic
laptop. I can see it in the dock on the left, and I can interact with
it that way (right-clicking to choose install available software), and
I can even close it out from there. But I cannot cause its main window
to appear on any desktop.

Rebooting does not clear this problem, and it happens even with the
reboot notifications.

display the window.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1210842] Re: Unity does not show launcher or status bar

2014-11-05 Thread Dario Bertini
Maybe this could be bug #1166765 ?
If it happens again, try to run `gsettings get
org.compiz.core:/org/compiz/profiles/unity/plugins/core/ active-plugins` on a
terminal, if 'opengl' and 'unityshell' are missing it's probably it

Unity Broken Today - No Panels or Launcher After Logon

Status in Unity:

Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
I installed the Ubuntu 14.04 64bit desktop on this ASUS F75A a few
weeks ago while it was still in beta.

Today, upon logging into this machine, the Unity Dekstop was missing
the top-panel and the launcher. I had to then press the power button
for 5 seconds to turn off this laptop because crtl-alt-t would not
  bring up a terminal.

In order to submit this bug, I've had to boot from the recently
  released live DVD.

I reinstalled Ubuntu 14.04 again today, onto this machine, but it
didn't fix the problem; as soon as I logged in for the first time
there was no panels or launchers.

Ironically, when booting from the Live DVD, the launchers and panels
  show up fine.

The laptop ran great for weeks on the 14.04 beta, but now a fresh
install produces a corrupted Unity Dekstop.

Bug description:

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1389573] Re: Update-notifier window invisible in utopic

2014-11-05 Thread Nick Moffitt
A second restart did clear it, so it may be a race in some kind of
display layer management somewhere, or something to that effect.

Title:
  Update-notifier window invisible in utopic

Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Somehow I ended up with update-notifier not being visible on my utopic
laptop. I can see it in the dock on the left, and I can interact with
it that way (right-clicking to choose install available software),
and I can even close it out from there. But I cannot cause its main
window to appear on any desktop.

Rebooting does not clear this problem, and it happens even with the
  reboot notifications.

  SRU INFORMATION:
  FIX: https://github.com/desrt/systemd-shim/commit/9e1ebe3ab (in trusty
already)

Regression potential: Low. Flushing the session bus was introduced in
version 4 and is obviously bogus as in a system D-BUS service there is
no session bus. This causes lots of confusing error messages and
unnecessary overhead like trying to start dbus-launch. Flushing the
system bus is low-risk, in most cases it's a no-op and it would
otherwise prevent losing signals after waking up. No known
  regressions.

TEST CASE: Run several suspend/resume cycles with the lid, session
indicator menu, and verify that the network comes back up. It is known
that this fix is necessary but not sufficient, so it is not expected
to fix all cases. But it should not make things worse, so if network
now does not come up any more on a machine where it previously worked
  this would count as failure/regression.

Bug description:
On fresh boots the greeter desktop may have the cursor visible or may not
until mouse is moved.
On a log out/in the cursor is almost always invisible until mouse is moved.
(unless made visible in greeter screen, then visible on Desktop

This is all well good, maybe some intentional aesthetics/design
(https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=687791) , however sometimes the
cursor never becomes visible.
In that case hitting some keys or context menu can cause it to show, though
most times a log out is needed.
(with the removal of ctrl+alt+delete log out this means most users will
need to either blindly find the session indicator or hit power button.

When the g-s-d cursor plugin is disabled then the cursor is always
visible, it the plugin has no use in an ubuntu session then maybe it
  should be default disabled

There is also the possibility, particularly on ssd drives, of a login
with no session indicator. This occasionally combines with no visible
  cursor.

I used Unity Tweak Tool to enable Toggle Shade using middle click.
When I click to top of the window, it rolls up and disappears. A
ghost outline of the window appears and the only way to get the
window back is by using Alt-tab. Sometimes, when reselecting the
window using Alt-tab, Ubuntu freezes (crashes) and an internal error
is generated. It seems to be related to Compiz but I'm not sure. An
error report was generated and sent.

  Description: Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (64-bit)
  Release: 14.04
  unity-tweak-tool 0.0.6ubuntu1

I expected the window would roll up and I'd be left with the
window's top bar like with previous versions of Ubuntu.
