  * Install an Nvidia graphics adapter and the proprietary driver.
  * Observe the graphics corrupt.
  * Install the version of Compiz with this fix.
  * Observe corruption is gone.

  [Regression Potential]

The patch for this was provided by Nvidia. There could be some corner

this fix far outweigh any corner cases.

  Original Description:

  == Proposed compiz-fusion-plugins-main patch ==
See comment 234 by Anders Kaseorg and attached
compiz-fusion-plugins-main_0.8.2-0ubuntu2.debdiff.

  == Original report ==
  Binary package hint: compiz

I'm using latest compiz on intrepid.

Since jockey-gtk does not work on my box (I already filed a bug), I
manually installed nvidia-glx-177 and added the "driver → nvidia" line
  to xorg.conf.

Now I seem to be having some screen refresh problems when using
compiz: parts of the screen are refreshed, but others aren't. That
means nautilus doesn't show files or folders until I move the cursor
over them, firefox doesn't show webpages properly until I scroll down,
  and so on.

Please, tell me if there is any additional info I can provide to find
  out the cause.

  [Impact]

Users of Nvidia gfx using the proprietary driver may see screen
  corruption during certain operations.

  [Test Case]

  * Install an Nvidia graphics adapter and the proprietary driver.
  * Observe the graphics corrupt.
  * Install the version of Compiz with this fix.
  * Observe corruption is gone.

  [Regression Potential]

The patch for this was provided by Nvidia. There could be some corner
cases users hit that may cause other issues. That said, enough
testing has been done to confidently say that the gains provided by
this fix far outweigh any corner cases.

  Original Description:

  == Proposed compiz-fusion-plugins-main patch ==
See comment 234 by Anders Kaseorg and attached
compiz-fusion-plugins-main_0.8.2-0ubuntu2.debdiff.

  == Original report ==

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1387558] Re: Compiz slows down over time (usually one day is enough)

2015-02-09 Thread Eduards Bezverhijs
Hi, recently I tried installing 14.10 on the same machine on different
partition and it seems that problem with rotation + slowdown is gone.
So as a next step was upgrading my trusty Trysty to Utopic. Right after upgrade
(and before login) I deleted monitors.xml file from my working profile (user)
and viola problem is gone.
So gar so good, I would like to say. So the problem was related to monitors.xml
or updates between my last try and this one, or both.
Can't say whether slowdown is gone as I'm using the system for just about one
day.
Will report back with the results.

Bug description:
I have had this problem for quite a long time tbh. And after each release I
hope it will be fixed, but it doesn't happen.
A little intro: I'm using Ubuntu for work, I rarely shutdown the computer I
rather put it to sleep mode, in worst case it's hibernate. I have loads of apps
opened at the same time. I use external monitor as well. Computer is Dell XPS15
L521X, 16Gb RAM, 120GB SSD + 1TB HDD. As a graphics card I'm using builtin
intel HD4000, I have GF GT640 as well but it's disabled using bbswitch.

Symptoms are that after some time compiz slows down a lot while using
it. Usually it's no more than 2 days and it's slow again. When I
restart Unity (setsid unity) it's back to full buttersmooth speed with
the same apps opened which leads to conclusion that compiz can handle
the load very well. Maybe it's mesa, maybe it's compiz or unity itself
that slows it down - but I'm no pro to tell.

With 14.10 release I observed very interesting behaviour. I have FHD
builtin monitor and FHD external monitor rotated counterclockwise.
Let's say I started computer yesterday in the morning, it was working
smooth with both monitors and single display, I suspended computer got
home unsuspended and it seemed sluggish (only graphics part of
course). I ran glxgears (I know I know...) and it showed ~ 50FPS which
is slow, because running the same before suspend gives near 60FPS
(refresh rate). Now I come back to work and run it on single builtin
display - ~ 50 FPS, I connect second FHD dispplay and FPS are back to
60 and it's running buttersmooth again. So it seems that
mesa/compiz/unity have some strange refresh rate problem detection
maybe... 2 FHD displays seems to be twice the job compiz has to do
over single display which is strangely slower...

Please advise how can I help solving this, do I need to run compiz
debug version or what can I exactly help technically (applying a
patch, compiling compiz myself, you name it...). I know the standard
procedure of logs etc., I'm afraid that won't help much in this
situation. I looked at logs and there's nothing suspicious, at least
  to me.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1394193] Re: 114 instances of indicator-sound-service running

2015-02-09 Thread Janne Snabb
One more thing:

I was able to get rid of the processes by executing the following
command:

$ sudo kill `ps axuwww | fgrep indicator-services-start | awk '{ print
$2 }'`

However, as a result I lost the sound control thingy from the panel. I
should have probably excluded the indicator process which was owned by
myself.

The following command might be better (not tested, for future
reference):

$ sudo pkill -u lightdm -f indicator-services-start

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1394193] Re: 114 instances of indicator-sound-service running

2015-02-09 Thread Janne Snabb
Same issue herre on Xubuntu 14.04.1 x86_64.

I have 103 instances of the process. The processes are owned by
"lightdm" user except for one which is owned by my userid "snabb" (see
the process list at the end).

There are also 103 instances of process "init --user --startup-event
indicator-services-start" owned by "lightdm" as well, except one is
owned by myself again (see the second process list at the end).

When executing "sudo killall indicator-sound-service" all of the
instances were restated.

At the time there was lots of syslog output by pulseaudio. See the end
of message for tail output.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1003950] Re: launcher does not show minimized update manager while clicked

2015-02-09 Thread Rick
The command below reserrects the hidden "Software Updater" window when
issued. It does not fix the underlying coding issues however it makes it
possibly to continue the update process without killing/quitting -
restarting the app.

sudo apt-get install wmctrl # if necessary
wmctrl -R 'Software Updater'

after issuing the command the window should appear and respond to its
controls as normal.

Hope this help... I take no credit as this is a repeat from one of the
posts higher up in this thread

Found an easy way to reproduce it during brussels sprint:
  1. start deja-dup or update-manager
  2. kill -9 compiz; metacity

  ===

Update manager is showing up in the dock but I can click on the icon
all day and nothing happens. Similarly if I do Super-S or Super-W it
  doesn't show up anywhere.

Even if I alt-tab to the application nothing shows up. This happens
only when update manager runs on its own. If I kill it and then launch
it myself it comes to the foreground just fine.

I'm not 100% sure whether this is a unity, compiz, or update-manager
bug but so far my bet is on unity.

A screenshot is attached. Unfortunately I didn't realize at the time

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1410495] Re: Battery indicator goes Critical Red with more than 1 hour battery left

2015-02-09 Thread Emilien Klein
Same issue here, once the battery drops below 30% it's shown as red, but
there's still plenty of time left (1:32 when I took the attached screenshot)
If the color really has to change at 29%, I'd be OK if the indicator was
yellow, but I'm just fine with the normal white one. Rred is just not
reasonable.

The Android phones I've had start warning about low battery at 15%, that
seems fine to me.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1317288] Re: Date and time do not show up on indicator panel

2015-02-09 Thread Kyler Laird
This has been annoying me since I reinstalled my laptop following a disk
failure recently. I finally ran across the advice to run "dconf reset
-f /com/canonical/indicator/datetime/". Voila! The clock reappeared.

Then I changed the settings to add the day of week. The clock
disappeared. Same thing if I add date & month. I can repeatedly
break/fix the clock simply by checking/unchecking these options. The
indicator-datetime-service process continues to run and does not need to
be restarted or reinitialized.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1412001] Re: alt+backtick doesn't focus on selected one of many windows previously clicked

Title:
alt+backtick doesn't focus on selected one of many windows previously
  clicked

Status in Unity:
  Triaged
Status in unity package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
This a user experience issue and easily reproducible.

Open multiple instances of your favorite application. Then click on
Unity's icon for the app when you are already focused on one instance
of it. This opens up a tile of the instances of the application which
you can select from with the mouse.

Now while that tile is shown, use ATL+backtick to select the window
you want instead of clicking with the mouse. The result is that the
  tile window doesn't go away.

If you use ALT+backtick and switch to ALT+tab (or start from ALT+tab
from the start) and select another kind of application, then the tile
goes away correctly and the other application comes in the front.

I can verify that the window you would select with ALT+backtick does
actually get to the top of the view and is marked as the "last visited
instance", because if you switch to another application (using
ALT+tab) and click back on the group of the original application you
would see the one you previously selected with ALT+backtick.

  ---

  Here are step-by-step instructions.

  - Open a couple of terminals
  - Open firefox
  - Click on the terminal icon
* This should open a tile showing the various terminal windows you have open
* If that doesn't happen, click again (you were not on a terminal window
before)
  - Use ALT+backtick to select one of the terminal windows

Expected behavior: The tile of terminals goes away and the selected
  terminal is focused

Observed behavior: The tile of terminals stays on the screen

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1418505] Re: QT5.4: Ciboriums scanning sdcard message is deleted but the indicator never turns off

2015-02-09 Thread Albert Astals Cid
Dave are you sure this works in Vivid? I just tried image 104 on krillin
and have the same problem described here (i.e. doesn't seem to be a Qt
5.4 issue to me).

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1419700] Re: Updating app causes url-dispatcher crash

2015-02-09 Thread Alan Pope 
Upon further digging, this is only reproducible under the following
conditions, so I'm saying this is neither a bug nor regression in music
or url-dispatcher.

Install music r815 (from store)
adb push music r830 to device
pkcon install-local --allow-unstrusted /path/to/music click

Now start music from the dash.
This triggers the crash of url-dispatcher.

However if you do the same, but crucially _refresh_ the dash by pulling
down, it doesn't crash url-dispatcher.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1301125] Re: Lock screen after idle time freezes unity

2015-02-09 Thread Andreas E.
I have 7.3.1+14.10.20141016-0ubuntu1 (unity-proposed and unity-backports
enabled).

Unfortunately I did not succeed just restarting unity (without restarting Xorg):
env DISPLAY=0,0 unity --restart
Gives error output (I don't have it kcomplete) with "unknown job
unity-panel-service". If it can be worked-around, how could it be it done?

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1135515] Re: Parcellite Applet-Indicator Doesn't Show on All Monitor's Workspaces

2015-02-09 Thread Lonnie Lee Best
The indicator now appears on each workspace of each monitor. So this bug
is fixed.

However, the context menu of the indicator does NOT list your clipboard
history like it once did (back when it worked). To be clear, it does
list "History" as an option, but what I mean is that is use to list your
last x clipping right there at the top of the menu, so you could
conveniently switch between your clippings.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1135515] Re: Parcellite Applet-Indicator Doesn't Show on All Monitor's Workspaces

2015-02-09 Thread Hugo Lefeuvre
Actually, after having a look at parcellite's fixed bugs, I noticed that a lot
of similar bugs were fixed.
So, before I forward this bug, could someone try to reproduce it with
parcellite 1.1.9 ?

Thanks !

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1252121] Re: missing PrepareForSleep signal after resuming, causing networking to stay disabled

2015-02-09 Thread Sergio Callegari
The issue of the network not reconnecting after a suspend cycle is
present also in 14.10 (utopic).

Maybe it is another bug, but if this is the case, the fact that other
bugs opened on the issue are made duplicate of this should be corrected.

The issue completely breaks the possibility of using wake on lan.

Machine is suspended
Machine is waken on lan
Machine is unusable because it properly wake on lan, but it is not on the lan.

Please consider providing a script in /etc/pm/sleep.d/ as a solution as
a SRU until a better solution can be found since having the network not
connecting on machines that do not have a human operator in front of
them means compelling the operator to taking a trip to the machine and
long down times.

  SRU INFORMATION:
  FIX: https://github.com/desrt/systemd-shim/commit/9e1ebe3ab (in trusty
already)

Regression potential: Low. Flushing the session bus was introduced in
version 4 and is obviously bogus as in a system D-BUS service there is
no session bus. This causes lots of confusing error messages and
unnecessary overhead like trying to start dbus-launch. Flushing the
system bus is low-risk, in most cases it's a no-op and it would
otherwise prevent losing signals after waking up. No known
  regressions.

TEST CASE: Run several suspend/resume cycles with the lid, session
indicator menu, and verify that the network comes back up. It is known
that this fix is necessary but not sufficient, so it is not expected
to fix all cases. But it should not make things worse, so if network
now does not come up any more on a machine where it previously worked
  this would count as failure/regression.

  How to reproduce:

  1) When notifications are displayed, remove all of them either by
swiping each notification or by pressing the 'clear' button.

  What I expected to happen:

The indicator icon should be grey now and when the screen is turned
off, the LED should not blink.

  What happened:

The indicator icon is still white and the LED blinks when the phone's
  screen is turned off.

This is quite bad since it means that the LED is consuming power all
  he time.
