[Dx-packages] [Bug 1302137] Re: display scaling out does not allow to view the complete desktop

2015-09-21 Thread Sebastien Bacher
The desktop always fits on screen, the issue there is that unity-
control-center doesn't resize as it should. Such low resolution is not a
standard usecase though and we are not going to work on making the
settings fit on that

There is no scroll bar to scroll horizontally or vertically.

  [ How to reproduce ]
Go to system settings -> Displays and change the "Scale for menu and title
bars:" to greater than or equal to 2.

[ What did I expect to happen ]
A horizontal and vertical scroll-bar will be displayed when display is scaled
out to view the complete desktop.

  [ What actually happened ]
No scroll bar(s) was displayed. So it is impossible to view the complete
desktop.

If in case of malious behavior, windows might get moved out of visible
area of the desktop. If this happens (more often in VMs than on PCs),
the user has no possibility to move this window back into the visible
area. One might argue that the reason for this is malious behavior and
bugs should be fixed instead of introducing an ambiguous function. I
guess, it wouldn't hurt though to add e.g. a context menu to the
window overview (where all windows of one application are displayed in
a raster) to provide a function to restore the position to the center
to the screen or the intial position.

Confusing keyboard navigation in dash (right/left give inconsistant

Status in Unity:

Status in unity package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
Keyboard navigation in the dash does not work as expected - pressing
left arrow after pressing right arrow does not necessarily return you
  to the original location.

  To reproduce:
  1. Press the super key to open the dash
  2. Press down arrow twice to select the first application in the list of
applications
  3. Press the right arrow repeatedly to select the right-most application in
the list of apps
  4. Press the right arrow again. The "Filter results" button is selected
  5. Press the left arrow

  Expected results:
The application selected in #3 is re-selected

  Actual results:
  The input field is selected

This was surprising on a couple of levels:
  1) The filter results button is directly above the search results, not to the
right
  2) You can't retrace your steps using the arrow keys: tapping the left arrow
does not 'undo' the effects of tapping right arrow
  3) The filter results button is immeidately to the right of the search input
field, but you can't get to the filter results button by pressing the right
arrow when the search input field is selected. Therefore It's extra-surprising
that right arrow gets you to filter results from other places in the dash.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1301206] Re: [regression] Black frame around windows and buttons "censored"

2015-09-21 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for your bug report. Is that still an issue? That seems more a
problem with nvidia drivers for some specific cards. Does it happen if
you turn off the binary drivers and use the nouveau ones?

Status in unity package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
unity-panel-service sits at between 3% and 5% of one core, all the
time. That's up to 50 MIPS! What's it doing?

Only standard indicators used, and most Unity lenses and scopes not
installed. Internet access is available and unfiltered. Standard Intel

Title:
Slow focus switching in Compiz - affects Unity Dash UX

Status in Unity:
  New
Status in unity package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Switching between focused and non-focused window works very slow. It
ends up with Unity being slower than it should be.

  To reproduce:

  1. Minimize or close EVERY window and open Dash - opens up instantly,
animation is smooth.
  2. Open a single window, move it "under" Dash and try to open Dash -
animation is a lot slower and it's very choppy. User might think, that it's
because window is drawn under the dash and it just eats up resources.
  3. Unfocus the window - by clicking on the empty space of the desktop. Notice
that with the window open, animation is still smooth!
  4. Open as many windows as you want and unfocus them - by clicking on the
desktop. Animation is still smooth - so it doesn't matter how many windows are
open, it's just changing focus.

This happens because of Unity grabbing active focus from the window.
Switching focus works very slow, and because of that dash opens
slowly. This affects for example switching to fullscreen in VLC or
  Totem.

This is not related to my older graphic card - I can run Crysis 2
smoothly, but changing focus works bad. Tried drivers from nvidia-
current to nvidia-331 - works the same on every driver.

Bug description:
Enable Locally Integrated Menus in System Settings -> Appearance ->
Behaviour -> Show the menus for a window -> "In the window's title
  bar".

Open a terminal window (any window will do)
Press ALT+PrScr to get a screenshot of that window
Examine the resulting screenshot, notice that the titlebar is a messed up mix
of the window titlebar and the menu.

Looks like the screenshot is taken just at the point that the titlebar
changes back from being a menu (as a result of pressing ALT in
"ALT+PrScr") back to being the titlebar.

I would expect the screenshot to have the titlebar, not the menu, and
not a mash of the two.

  See screenshot.

Now enable locally integrated menus and maximise an application then do the
same.

I've observed the behaviour is inconsistent.

  With global menu: Menu opens
With LIM: Window detaches from being maximised.

This makes it slower using LIM as you can't click and drag down to
open a menu, you have to click/release then slide down and click
  again.

It is python script that checks distance to bluetooth device and uses:

  gnome-screensaver-command -d

  to unlock it.

Since 14.04 I have been prompted for password when I get back to my
computer (it is not gnome keyring password, it is unlock screen
password). It worked without password before.

I am aware of the bug causing lock screen asking for password twice
and I turned off the lock in Brightness and Lock system settings to
fix it. It seems that the problem is unrelated and authors of the new
unlock mechanism didn't consider unlocking screen remotely or from
  command line interface.

when the screen is locked by idle time, I cannot unlock it.

At this point, I can see the screen but with some kind of translucent

indicate any error. The only strange log was in .xsession-errors.old:

But as it has no time info, I cannot tell when they happened.

Bug description:
I've (finally) started trying to use the Dash for targeted searches,
like weather or dictionary. I'd like to be able to drive this entirely
by the keyboard, but it doesn't work quite right. For example:

  1. tap super key to launch dash
  2. quickly type 'define: stuff'. After a small delay (it would be nice if it
was faster here) I see-- "Reference", a big heart (why a heart?) and "stuff:
definition"
  3. once the big heart is highlighted by navigating via combinations of Tab
and arrow keys, if I press 'Enter', the browser is opened. This is different
than if I click on the heart, which give me the scope results in the dash
  4. if I click the big heart, and go back to the keyboard I cannot make the
definition in the dash scroll via keyboard navigation

This makes the Dash less useful than it could be. Eg:
  * if I am using a specific scope (ie, 'define: someword') and there is only
one result, it seems like we should just show the content of the search in that
result without having to click on the icon for the scope (ie, I type 'define:
stuff', press Enter and see the definition)
  * for '3', I think this is a bug-- 'Enter' on the highlighted scope should
advance to the scope's result (in this case, the definition) and then I can use
keyboard navigation to highlight 'View' and press 'Enter' to launch the browser
  * for '4', I would expect PgUp and PgDown to work and/or Up/Down arrows

uncomfortable sensitivity area of the launcher

Bug description:
  Hi,

The sensitivity area of the launcher (that makes it automatically scroll up
or down when one has more than a dozen icons in it) used to be quite large and
comfortable. However, after an update it has been narrowed down to two tiny
spots, none of which even extend to the upper or lower edges of the screen.
For instance, to scroll down, one should hover the 1cm wide area over the
unremovable rubbish bin icon.

This demands precision and patience, for no gain with respect to the
previous version: before this update, it felt like the lower (hidden)
part of the launcher unfolded by taking into account the ratio (height
of the screen over the mouse)/(height under the mouse), which was
quite convenient. Also the rubbish icon was not glued to the lower
left corner, and I think that the two problems are related.

I'm using ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS, and my version of unity is 5.20.0-0ubuntu3.

LIM - can't multiple click decorations over the menus labels

Bug description:
When you activate Locally Integrated Menus (LIM) on Ubuntu 14.04
Trusty Tahr, you can properly move a window even when menu is shown
just as expected. However, when you try to maximize a window double
clicking on the menu item shown on the decoration, it does not work.
The menu is triggered instead. It properly works as expected if you
double click an area after the menu items. The menu should be
triggered only when a single click is made, not a double click, if
this is possible to distinguish. The same goes on unmaximizing. If you
try "triple" clicking the menu on an not-maximized window, it often do
work maximizing it. That is not the expected behavior IMHO.

This makes it impossible to use said key with compiz's other window

I thought I must just be missing wherever the option lives so I read
the source and was surprised to see it getting hard-coded to whatever
key is above "Tab". Seems a rather odd choice, since all the other
keys get handled the usual way as configurable options.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1280555] Re: Square Icons should not have a border

I am talking about how the icons are rendered in unity7.
A square icons gets an additional square border which seems off.

You can probably mark this as wont fix as unity7 is in maintenance mode.

This bug is as old as the first unity I know in Ubuntu 11.04. When I'm
trying to open a document with an application from the launcher by
dragging and dropping it at the application's icon on the launcher,
the launcher only shows up for the first document.

  To reproduce the bug do:
  1. Put Gedit in the launcher
  2. Open Nautilus
  3. browse to a text file
  4. drag it (the launcher shows up) and drop it on gedit's icon (gedit
launches)
  5. browse to another file and drag it again to the launcher
--> the launcher wouldn't show up

I encounter this behavior with any application I put in the launcher.
Gedit with textfiles is just one example.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1470097] Re: Unity does not support cpus without sse4

2015-09-21 Thread Treviño
The only we need are compiz-core-dbgsym compiz-plugins-default-dbgsym
compiz-gnome-dbgsym libcompizconfig0-dbgsym

They should all be on ddebs repos.

When the spread is used to display multiple windows of the same

This is annoying when trying to locate one window from a group of very

Status in unity-2d package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Steps to reproduce:
  1. open the Unity 2D dashboard or click on the 'Applications' or 'Files &
Folders' lenses.
  2. if your native screen resolution is 1280x800 the views do not open full
screen. (this may be by design. please read further)
  3. click on the icon in the bottom right hand corner to force the view to
full screen.
  4. close the view (clicking the ubuntu logo in the top left hand corner will
accomplish this)
  5. repeat step 1. the views have returned to their default state (not full
screen)

  Expected behavior:
When I tell Unity 2D that I prefer the dashboard or lens views to display
full screen (by clicking the icon in the bottom right hand corner) I expect
that subsequent visits to those same views maintain that preference in the same
way that Unity 2D honors both the 'Shortcuts' (on the dashboard) and 'Refine
Search' ( 'Applications' or 'Files & Folders' lenses) options when they are
re-opened. Why is the full screen behavior different than the others? It
shouldn't be. It's EXTREMELY frustrating to have to force Unity 2D to take
advantage of ALL my screen real-estate EVERY single time when I use the views.

  Proposed (recommended) solution:
Have Unity 2D store the full screen state of the dashboard or lense view when
it's closed. The next time the user opens the view Unity 2D can check the
previous state and restore it instead of resetting to it's default. This could
be accomplished as easily as checking a key like "dash_fullscreen = 1". Similar
to the other options mentioned above this preference should last the entire
session until I log out.

  Proposed (long term) solution:
A native Unity 2D (user configurable) settings page with a checkbox for full
screen preference. If this solution is chosen it should persist permanently and
the preference restored among multiple sessions as well as reboots.

Obviously, despite some improvements that have came late in the 12.10
development cycle, there are still serious privacy concerns with the
unity shopping lens. To be more precise, here are the main problems
to be fixed according to EFF:

  - Disable "Include online search results" by default.

  - Explain in detail what Canonical does with search queries and IP
addresses, how long it stores them, and in what circumstances it gives
  them to third parties.

  - Make the Search Results tab of the Privacy settings let users toggle
on and off specific online search results, as some users might want
Amazon products in their search results, but never anything from
  Facebook.

  Here is another related bug:

Bug description:
The Unity Dash is slated to replace file browsers as the primary way
users find and access data. Currently, it is possible for third-party
applications to request a file browser open, looking for a certain
extension of file. It should also be possible for third-party
applications to request the Dash open, looking at a certain scope,
lens, and filters-combination. Ideally, libunity would provide a D-bus
  API for such a task.

This was originally an AskUbuntu question, but since sabdfl encouraged
me to file a bug for this problem, I figure I might as well. The
  question [ http://askubuntu.com/q/72266/24694 ] provides one example
of how this API might be used.

I'm seeing every 4 seconds the *same* files being added to an inotify

 4.0 sec4.0 sec4.0 sec
   Total 0.266723

the timeout is set to just 4 seconds. Is this heavy polling and
repeated inotify watch adding really required? We're trying to get
the battery life to last longer and this kind of polling activity just
is rather anti-social if it is not necessary.

Attached are the results of a 5 minute analysis from the health-check

Bug description:
If scopes in different lenses have names that are too similar to each
other, results from one lens can show up incorrectly under another
one. This can be most easily noticed in the home lens, but can occur
  under individual lenses as well.

For example, installing the Bliss lens (lp:unity-lens-bliss) and the
Books lens (lp:unity-lens-books) can lead to results from the Bliss
lens (applications) showing up under both Bliss's applications
category and the Books category when a global search is done. A
screenshot is attached to demonstrate this The screenshot contains
results for the default applications lens, the Bliss lens and the
Books lens, with Firefox showing up under all three. It should not
  show up under Books.

This happens due to the fact that the local scope in the Bliss lens
dbus path is named: ''/net/launchpad/unitylensbliss/scope/main" and
Books one is named "/net/launchpad/lens/books/scope/main". Using
D-Feet to view dbus introspection data, it appears that the details
  for both net.launchpad.UnityLensBliss.Lens and
  net.launchpad.Lens.Books show
  /com/canonical/dee/model/com/canonical/Unity/Scope/main/T1321723498/Results
in their introspection data. Note that 'main' appears as the final
part of the scope's dbus path and the scope definition lens's
  introspection data.

A workaround for this is to ensure that the last part of the dbus path
  of a scope is unique.
