[Dx-packages] [Bug 465689] Re: Ubuntu Clock Won't Show Year

2018-04-06 Thread Lonnie Lee Best
I was ultimately able to achieve my exactly desired format using a GNOME
extension made by Daniel Khodabakhsh. Thank you Daniel!

I found that here:
https://github.com/Daniel-Khodabakhsh/datetime-format

Screenshot:
http://neartalk.com/ss/2018-04-06_003_1919x1079.png

Format:
%A | %m-%d-%G | %I:%M %p

The Ubuntu menu bar clock offers no setting to "show year".

Yes, I know what year it is, but I have very good reason for wanting
it shown. For years, I've been collecting screen-shots, when I'm doing
something I think is pretty cool. When I use to use windows, these
screen shots (over the years) have always showed the current year.

However, since April of 2007 (The date I started using Ubuntu
exclusively), my screen shots have not included the year, because the
Gnome clock doesn't provide this capability.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 465689] Re: Ubuntu Clock Won't Show Year

2018-04-06 Thread Lonnie Lee Best
Will I ever be able to convenience people that "show year" is actually a
useful feature when taking screenshots over time?

Now, that I've upgraded to Ubuntu 18.04 and GNOME 3.28, it looks like
I'll have to start this 2009 battle all over again. It will not allow me
to format the clock the way I want it to display.

In Unity, I could at least achieved my desired clock format with a
command:

gsettings set com.canonical.indicator.datetime time-format "'custom'" ;
gsettings set com.canonical.indicator.datetime custom-time-format "'%A |
%m-%d-%Y | %l:%M%p'"

In GNOME 3.28 on Ubuntu 18.04, I've yet to figure out a way to achieved
my desired format. The GUI doesn't offer "show year" and I've yet to
discover a command (like the one above) that achieves the exact custom
format I desire.

Unity Dash can't understand logout, reboot, or shutdown

Status in Unity:
  Triaged
Status in Unity Applications Lens:
  Triaged
Status in unity package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
This bug proposes the additional surfacing of power-management and
session actions directly within the Dash:

    - Reboot (restart is another good alias for this)
    - Shutdown (other intuitive aliases: shut down, turn off)
    - logout (aliases: log out, log off and logoff)
    - Suspend/hibernate
    - Lock
    - Switch User

Currently these user-initiated actions are presented via the Devices
(cog/gear-icon-menu), and can be accessed via the keyboard using
  either:

    1. [Alt]+[F10] [Left] [Up/Down] [Enter]
    2. [Alt] Shutdown/Log out [Up/Down] [Enter]
    3. [Ctrl]+[Alt]+[Del] [Enter] (Log off only)
    4. [Ctrl]+[Alt]+[t] sudo reboot [Enter]

(Note that Restart/Reboot can not be accessed directly via 1-3).

These methods are less likely to be found by the user than surfacing these
actions additionally within the Dash. This would help in cases where a
mouse/pointer is no longer available, such as mouse-cursor did not appear
after logging in to the Unity Desktop
    https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/1403287

This would also assist with ctrl-alt-delete doesn't provide a reboot option
    https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/1403289

It is proposed by surfacing these options in the Unity Dash, that
finding the actions would be more intuitive, and would make the Dash
feel more complete as the defacto first-point-of-call for user
  initiated actions.

  Implementation possibilities:

    1. Hard-code special-case actions into the Dash (requires Design review,
code and ship acceptance)
    2. Implement as Dash plugin (requires code and ship acceptance)
    3. Install additional .desktop listing the Name, Icon and Aliases in
/usr/share/applications/*.desktop (can be provided by a separate optional
package, only requires ship acceptance)

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1135515] Re: Parcellite Applet-Indicator Doesn't Show on All Monitor's Workspaces

2015-02-09 Thread Lonnie Lee Best
The indicator now appears on each workspace of each monitor. So this bug
is fixed.

However, the context menu of the indicator does NOT list your clipboard
history like it once did (back when it worked). To be clear, it does
list History as an option, but what I mean is that is use to list your
last x clipping right there at the top of the menu, so you could
conveniently switch between your clippings.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1418078] Re: Maximize Window Bug - Using Workspaces

2015-02-04 Thread Lonnie Lee Best
** Description changed:

The code that gets initiated when a window is maximize is flawed in
regards to which workspace it targets for maximization.

When a window becomes maximized it should always maximize to the
workspace where the mouse-cursor was at at the time that the
maximization was initiated. Yet, in Unity, the windows manager will
maximize to a different workspace if a certain portion of that window is
outside the bounds of the current workspace.

To easily reproduce this undesired behavior:

  1) Enable Workspaces:
System Settings Appearance Behavior Enable Workspaces

- 2) Drag the window to the bottom of the screen, so that its title-bar is
- still visible on the current workspace, but a fair portion overflows to
- the underneath-workspace.
+ 2) Drag any maximizable window (of any application) to the bottom of the

+ In that video, at the beginning, if I were to have maximized that

  1) Enable Workspaces:
System Settings Appearance Behavior Enable Workspaces

  2) Drag any maximizable window (of any application) to the bottom of the
screen, so that its title-bar is still visible on the current workspace,
but a fair portion overflows into the underneath-workspace.

  3) Maximize the window.

Result: It will maximize the window to another workspace than the
workspace you were in at the time of the maximization.

In that video, at the beginning, if I were to have maximized that
window, it would send it to the bottom (wrong) workspace. Because of
that fact, you can see how much trouble it took to achieve the desired
result of maximizing it in the currently focused workspace.

- Although this is a different bug, it would benefit greatly if the
- Window-Maximization code was based on the workspace where the mouse-
- cursor was at at the time of maximization.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1370014] Re: Remmina Launching Remote Sessions Larger than Workspace

Essentially, when using the Unity desktop in a Multiple Monitor setup

larger than the workspace to which I'm launching it.

Another thing to note about my set up, is that I do use Ubuntu's scaling
feature to make things about 10% larger than the default size (to
accommodate my otherwise straining eyes). Some times I use large text
too. These facts may be totally unrelated to the bug, but I thought I
  would at least mention them.

Please upgrade the software version for Remmina in the Ubuntu 14.04

most important Linux programs I use on a daily basis. This bug is
driving me crazy.

Ubuntu 14.04 is a Long Term Release. A bug like this should not have to
be endured for 4 years. Please assist.

In the last couple of weeks, I've experienced problems (off and on),

  cursor.

When this happens, with the intention of rebooting, I hit ctrl-alt-
delete. This produces a dialog that allows me to logout (but does not
provide an option to reboot my machine). If I logout, and then log
back in, the mouse-cursor still remains missing. However, if I this
ctrl-alt-t, and type sudo reboot, after rebooting the mouse cursor
  beings to appear again.

I never experienced this behavior in Ubuntu 14.04 until the last two
weeks or so. So it seems some recent package upgrade (via Ubuntu
  Software Updater) is the culprit.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1403293] Re: Unity Dash can't understand logout, reboot, or shutdown

2014-12-19 Thread Lonnie Lee Best
My intent, in reporting this bug, is not to find a work-around for me
specifically, but is to propose a default behavior for the masses. We
want to maximize the user-friendliness to a brand new user of Ubuntu
Unity, without harming the work-flow of a seasoned professional.

This proposal is intended as a usability completeness, in keeping with
the goal of achieving tasks via the Unity Dash.

The designers of the Unity Dash, have taken great effort to allow new
users (and old) to achieve numerous tasks by hitting the super key and
typing a short phrase. They've designed several scopes allowing a user
find almost anything on their computer (and even scopes that search for
things on the internet).

So, it seems unusual to me, that (out of all the things you can do with
the dash) you cannot search and find such fundamental task as : logout,
reboot, suspend, or shutdown.

I'm proposing additions to the *default* dash lookup scope, that not
only make these tasks available (via the dash), but also activate the
corresponding alias-phrases mentioned previously:

  - Reboot (restart is another good alias for this)
  - Shutdown (other intuitive aliases: shut down, turn off)
  - logout (aliases: log out, log off and logoff)
  - suspend/hibernate

Bug description:
In their efforts to make the Unity Dash the goto place for everything
you want to do, the developers have over looked 3 fundamental tasks
that a user might intuitively try to achieve with the unity dash:

    - Reboot (restart is another good alias for this)
    - Shutdown (other intuitive aliases: shut down, turn off)
    - logout (aliases: log out, log off and logoff)

I realize that the gear-icon-menu is the intended method for achieving
  such tasks, but consider this:

That menu is not intuitively accessible via the keyboard. Try to access it
without your mouse! It might be possible, but if so, it is not intuitive. I
realized this today, when I encountered a bug where my mouse-cursor did not
appear after logging in to the Unity Desktop:
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/1403287

  Additionally, ctrl-alt-delete doesn't provide a reboot option:
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/1403289

There are clearly circumstances where it would be very nice to reboot
or shutdown your computer via the dash. As a matter of fact, I think
it would be my preferred method of achieving these task if it were
available. Instead of mousing to the gear menu (and clicking a menu
option), I would much rather hit the super key and type reboot or
  restart.

Granted, I could achieve this via Unity Alt-key menu, or by hitting
ctrl-alt-T, but you have to type sudo reboot (and enter your dang
password) to achieve this. I'd rather go the gear-icon-method than be
  required to type my password!

Therefore, this unity-dash method I'm proposing would be a nice
compromise. And, from an intuitive perspective, its simply an
oversight (everyone has ignored) that should have been there all
  along, respectfully.

I guess you are saying that this is more specific to Ayatana Design than

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1403289] Re: ctrl-alt-delete is missing a reboot option in Unity Desktop

2014-12-17 Thread Lonnie Lee Best
While logged into Ubuntu Desktop, if you hit the power button for one
second, it produces a menu similar to what I'm proposing for ctrl-alt-
delete.

Perhaps, as a quick fix, we can just point ctrl-alt-delete to that same
menu (produced by hit the power button). The only proposed option
missing from this menu is System Monitor Windows OS offers Task
Manager as an option when a user hits ctrl-alt-delete and I never want
Ubuntu to be out-done by windows, so it seems we should put our System
Monitor option there as well.

ctrl-alt-delete is missing a reboot option in Unity Desktop

Bug description:
The Unity Desktop doesn't allow a user to reboot their computer by
  hitting ctrl-alt-delete.

When ctrl-alt-delete his hit, only two options are provided:
  - Lock
  - Log out

This bugs is requesting that 4 more options be added to this menu:
  - Reboot
  - Shutdown
  - System Monitor
  - Command Prompt

  Use Case:

  Today I encountered a situation where I did not have a mouse-cursor
after logging into the Unity desktop. That bug is reported in detail
  here:

  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/1403287

Ultimately, I had to hit ctrl-alt-t to acquire a command prompt, and
type the command sudo reboot in order to reboot my computer.

The most widely familiar first step for dealing with a computer that
is either locked up or missing a mouse cursor is the Windows
tradition of hitting ctrl-alt-delete. The Unity desktop understands
ctrl-alt-delete, but offers a super limited menu of options after the
  user hits ctrl-alt-delete.

Additionally, keep this mind: Although most menus are accessible (in
Unity) via the keyboard, the little gear icon (top-right: used to
reboot your computer) is NOT intuitively accessible via the keyboard.

Furthermore, the unity dash should understand what REBOOT or
SHUTDOWN means! I'm not saying that the unity dash should restart
you computer when you type restart or reboot there, but it should at
least offer the option of doing so after such things are typed.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1403287] [NEW] Missing Mouse-Cursor After Login

2014-12-16 Thread Lonnie Lee Best
Public bug reported:

In the last couple of weeks, I've experienced problems (off and on),
where after logging into the Unity desktop, I do not have a mouse-
cursor.

When this happens, with the intention of rebooting, I hit ctrl-alt-
delete. This produces a dialog that allows me to logout (but does not
provide an option to reboot my machine). If I logout, and then log back
in, the mouse-cursor still remains missing. However, if I this ctrl-
alt-t, and type sudo reboot, after rebooting the mouse cursor beings to
appear again.

I never experienced this behavior in Ubuntu 14.04 until the last two
weeks or so. So it seems some recent package upgrade (via Ubuntu
Software Updater) is the culprit.

Title:
  Missing Mouse-Cursor After Login

Status in unity package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
In the last couple of weeks, I've experienced problems (off and on),
where after logging into the Unity desktop, I do not have a mouse-
  cursor.

When this happens, with the intention of rebooting, I hit ctrl-alt-
delete. This produces a dialog that allows me to logout (but does not
provide an option to reboot my machine).

  ProblemType: Bug
  DistroRelease: Ubuntu 14.04

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1403289] [NEW] ctrl-alt-delete is missing a reboot option in Unity Desktop

2014-12-16 Thread Lonnie Lee Best
Public bug reported:

Additionally, keep this mind: Although most menus are accessible (in
Unity) via the keyboard, the little gear icon (top-right: used to reboot
your computer) is NOT intuitively accessible via the keyboard.

Furthermore, the unity dash should understand what REBOOT or
SHUTDOWN means! I'm not saying that the unity dash should restart you
computer when you type restart or reboot there, but it should at least
offer the option of doing so after such things are typed.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1403293] [NEW] Unity Dash can't understand restart, reboot, or shutdown

2014-12-16 Thread Lonnie Lee Best
Public bug reported:

In their efforts to make the Unity Dash the goto place for everything you want
to do, the developers have over looked 3 fundamental tasks that a user might
intuitively try to achieve with the unity dash:
  - Reboot
  - Restart (another alias a user might intuitively type to achieve reboot)
  - Shutdown (other intuitive possibilities: , shut down, turn off)

I realize that the gear-icon-menu is the intended method for achieving
such tasks, but consider this:

That menu is not intuitively accessible via the keyboard. Try to access it
without your mouse! It might be possible, but if so, it is not intuitive. I
realized this today, when I encounter a bug where my mouse cursor did not
appear after logging in to the Unity Desktop:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/1403287

Additionally, ctrl-alt-delete doesn't provide a reboot option:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/1403289

There are clearly circumstances where it would be very nice to reboot or
shutdown your computer via the dash. As a matter of fact, I think it
would be my preferred method of achieving these task if it were
available. Instead of mousing to the gear menu (and clicking a menu
option), I would much rather hit the super key and type reboot or
restart.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1403293] Re: Unity Dash can't understand logout, reboot, or shutdown

2014-12-16 Thread Lonnie Lee Best
** Summary changed:

- Unity Dash can't understand restart, reboot, or shutdown
+ Unity Dash can't understand logout, reboot, or shutdown

** Description changed:

In their efforts to make the Unity Dash the goto place for everything
you want to do, the developers have over looked 3 fundamental tasks
that a user might intuitively try to achieve with the unity dash:

    - Reboot (restart is another good alias for this)
-   - Shutdown (other intuitive possibilities: , shut down, turn off)
- - logout (log out alias)
+   - Shutdown (other intuitive aliases: shut down, turn off)
+   - logout (aliases: log out, log off and logoff)

-
- I realize that the gear-icon-menu is the intended method for achieving such
tasks, but consider this:
+ I realize that the gear-icon-menu is the intended method for achieving
+ such tasks, but consider this:

That menu is not intuitively accessible via the keyboard. Try to access it
without your mouse! It might be possible, but if so, it is not intuitive. I
realized this today, when I encountered a bug where my mouse-cursor did not
appear after logging in to the Unity Desktop:
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/1403287

  Additionally, ctrl-alt-delete doesn't provide a reboot option:
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/1403289

There are clearly circumstances where it would be very nice to reboot or
shutdown your computer via the dash. As a matter of fact, I think it
would be my preferred method of achieving these task if it were
available. Instead of mousing to the gear menu (and clicking a menu
option), I would much rather hit the super key and type reboot or
  restart.

Granted, I could achieve this via Unity Alt-key menu, or by hitting
ctrl-alt-T, but you have to type sudo reboot (and enter your dang
password) to achieve this. I'd rather go the gear-icon-method than be
  required to type my password!

Therefore, this unity-dash method I'm proposing would be a nice
compromise. And, from an intuitive perspective, its simply an oversight
(everyone has ignored) that should have been there all along,
  respectfully.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1370014] Re: Remmina Launching Remote Sessions Larger than Workspace

2014-12-11 Thread Lonnie Lee Best
You can detect which version of remmina you are using by running this as
one command:

sudo apt-get install apt-show-versions ; sudo apt-show-versions remmina

In Ubuntu 14.01 this returns:

remmina:amd64/trusty 1.0.0-4ubuntu3 uptodate

What version is being run in Ubuntu 14.10?

It seems like I tested 14.10 and did not have this bug we are reporting
here. I'm hoping we can get the corrected version of Remmina into the
14.01 LTS. Is this likely?

Essentially, when using the Unity desktop in a Multiple Monitor setup
(using workspaces), Remmina is launching remote sessions into a window
larger than the workspace to which I'm launching it.

Another thing to note about my set up, is that I do use Ubuntu's
scaling feature to make things about 10% larger than the default size
(to accommodate my otherwise straining eyes). Some times I use large
text too. These facts may be totally unrelated to the bug, but I

  I'm using a fully update Ubuntu 14.04 Desktop 64bit.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1370014] Re: Remmina Launching Remote Sessions Larger than Workspace

2014-11-26 Thread Lonnie Lee Best
Is this bug fixed in later versions? Perhaps the 14.04 package needs
upgrading?

In Ubuntu 14.04, I'm running this version:

remmina:amd64/trusty 1.0.0-4ubuntu3 uptodate

You can see what version you are running by running the following in one
command line:

sudo apt-get install apt-show-versions ; sudo apt-show-versions remmina

This remains an issue for me.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1370014] Re: Remmina Launching Remote Sessions Larger than Workspace

2014-11-26 Thread Lonnie Lee Best
I you view the video of this bug (on YouTube), under it is a message board
where Brendan Hide said this:

I've had this exact same bug running ArchLinux. Seems to have been fixed in
the latest version however. My pacman log shows I updated Remmina on Thursday
October 17th from v1.0.0 to v1.1.1.

Video: http://youtu.be/wKGLff7HhS8

Since Ubuntu 14.04 is an LTS, the Remmina package should be upgraded in
the Ubuntu repositories to version 1.1.1 (or later perhaps).

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1358557] [NEW] Can't Drag Overlay Scroll-bar to Top on Long Files

2014-08-18 Thread Lonnie Lee Best
Public bug reported:

In multiple graphical text editors I'm often experiencing difficulty
using the Overlay Scroll-bar to drag-scroll to the very top of the
document.

I will click-grab-drag the overlay scrollbar all the way to its top-most
position and then still be about 1/3 of the way from the very top of the
text document.

I'm noticing this unwanted behavior mainly on text files that have over
700 lines. And I've experience it, so far, in both gedit and geany.

This may have nothing to do with it, but I will inform you that I am a big fan
of Ubuntu 14.04's scaling features. While running my laptop's monitor at it
highest resolution (1920 x 1080), I scale my screen larger (1.12), using the
settings that can be found here:
System Settings Displays Scale for Menus and Titlebars

Additionally, I use large fonts, which can be found here:
System Settings Universal Access Large Text On

As I said, these scaling and large font settings may be unrelated to
this issue, but I'm mentioning it just in case.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1328884] [NEW] Can't Sustain Full Screen Flash Video while using Multiple Monitors

2014-06-11 Thread Lonnie Lee Best
Public bug reported:

I've been using Ubuntu desktop since April of 2007 (starting with
version 7.04).

This is the oldest unfixed bug I know of.

When you have two monitors, if you maximize a youtube flash video on one
monitor, any action you perform on the other monitor minimizes the
video.

It has always been impossible to watch a flash video full-screen on one
monitor while preforming tasks on a second monitor.

I reported this back in 2007, but couldn't find that bug report.

Anyway, it is 7 years later, and the bug still persists.

Deleting all the hidden files and folders in the home directory was
overkill. Which specific hidden file/folders would have been more
targeted? I'd like to take note of this for future reference.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1309806] Re: Unity Broken Today - No Panels or Launcher After Logon

2014-04-18 Thread Lonnie Lee Best
The reason the reinstall didn't fix the issue is because I have the
/home folder on a separate partition and upon logging in for the first
time, Unity was reading the hidden files in the user's home directory.
Apparently, after the final release, there were some previously created
(during the beta) configuration files that Unity no longer understood
after release day.

I fixed the problem by deleting all hidden files and folders from the
user's home directory (using the Live DVD), and (although probably not
necessary) I reinstalled Ubuntu 14.04 after this.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1302775] [NEW] Turn Screen off when inactive Fails When in Locked State

2014-04-04 Thread Lonnie Lee Best
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1292041 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1292041

Public bug reported:

After locking my desktop, my monitor never turns off. After a lock, it
no longer honors the settings specified at:

All Settings Brightness Lock Turn screen off when inactive for: x
minutes

This has remained an issue ever since the developers changed the way
Ubuntu looks during a lock. It looks better, but now ignores screen-off
settings.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 733349] Re: Minimize Application's Windows upon clicking its Launcher Icon

2014-03-24 Thread Lonnie Lee Best
As much as I appreciate any way to accomplish this, I must agree with
Tal Liron.

To achieve this option, you must install additional software and a
regular use won't ever know this option exists.

Furthermore, this option should be the default for 14.04. Not one bug
report would be reported if this option were made default in the 14.04
release. No one would complain *period*. This should be given to
everybody. It is completely intuitive. Every other major operating
system does this by default.

My suggestion would be to modify the interaction-design/process like
  this (*=my modification proposal/2 cents!):

  1) start it, if it hasn't been started yet;
  *2) restore it, if it is minimized;
  *3) focus the app, if it's started, not minimized and has not the focus yet;
  4) spread windows (of app), if app is focused and has multiple windows open;
*5) minimize it if it is in spread-mode (see 4).

Note that this bug has over 300 comments and several working but
rejected patches. This means that this feature probably will never
land in official Unity! So if you want it, you have to use a patched
  version of Unity.

There is a working patch for 13.04 ( from comment #322,

[Dx-packages] [Bug 733349] Re: Minimize Application's Windows upon clicking its Launcher Icon

2014-03-19 Thread Lonnie Lee Best
@Christopher Townsend

Thank you so much for listening to user feedback and implementing a fair
compromise. Please don't under estimate how important this is to us. I
can barely stand it when a lot of people want something and the
developers won't even at least add it as a preference that can be access
through a settings menu.

You have no idea how much this little fix has boosted my Ubuntu morale!

Question: I have a fully updated Ubuntu 14.04; when can I expect to see
your fix in action (by simply installing updates suggested by the Ubuntu
Update Manager)?

[Dx-packages] [Bug 733349] Re: Minimize Application's Windows upon clicking its Launcher Icon

2014-03-12 Thread Lonnie Lee Best
Comment #335 should remain the focus of this post I'd like to remind.

Ubuntu 14.04 is great.

The dash is fine for type-launching an application, but not good for
surveying the applications you got. However, the classicmenu-indicator
package addresses this shortcoming.

Now, in 14.04, you can set window's menus to be in the title bar of each
window, instead of that mac-like crap on the top panel. This is huge
preference addition for me in 14.04.

I love the Unity Launcher (task bar).

My only remaining gripe with Unity is this bug of not implementing
what's described in post #335.

Yes, I know what year it is, but I have very good reason for wanting

something I think is pretty cool. When I use to use windows, these
screen shots (over the years) have always showed the current year.

However, since April of 2007 (The date I started using Ubuntu

[Dx-packages] [Bug 732653] Re: Menus are hidden by default

2013-09-02 Thread Lonnie Lee Best
I agree. Any time I installed Ubuntu onto someone's system, I really
have to emphasize to them that they must hover at the top to see these
menus. This is not very intuitive; it has to be figured out the hard way
or shown to you.

New users need to SEE the options available to them, not FEEL AROUND for
them.

  Ubuntu 11.04, Ubuntu 11.10, Ubuntu 12.04

  1. Log in to Unity, and try to connect to a server: File Connect to
Server.
  2. Launch Firefox, and try to select an item from the Bookmarks menu.

  What happens:

  1. The File menu, and the rest of Nautilus's menus, are hidden by default.
  - Unless you mouse over it, the menu bar is blank.
  - When you mouse over it, the menus appear.

  2. The Bookmarks menu, and the rest of Firefox's menus, are hidden by
default.
  - Unless you mouse over it, the menu bar contains only the text Firefox Web
Browser, which isn't useful at all (especially, but not only, since the real
name of the application -- Mozilla Firefox -- is already present in the
window title bar).
  - When you mouse over it, the menus appear, partly but not completely
replacing the previous text: Firefox W File Edit View….

What should happen: Menus should be visible by default, so that you
can know that they exist without scrubbing the screen, and so that you
can see where a menu is each time you aim for it.

The current behavior has led some people (including, this week, one of
my design colleagues) to conclude that Ubuntu applications don't have
menus when they do. For example
  http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/opensource/gnome-shell-vs-ubuntu-
unity-which-desktop-wins/2291: One of the most handy menu entries in
GNOME (for me at least) is the Connect to Server entry in the Places
menu. This allows the user to connect to nearly any type of server
quickly and easily. The user can even connect to a Windows Share from
here. In Unity - you won’t find that. In fact, you will be hard
pressed to find any means to connect to a server in Ubuntu Unity.

In bug 720424, Jono Bacon reported that when we did some developer
tools usability testing last week and on some other occasions when I
have had someone use Unity, I have noticed that some folks don't
realize there is a menu there as it is not visible.

This was confirmed by usability testing of Ubuntu 11.04, where 2 out
of the 10 people who needed to use a menu item could not find the
menus at all -- and of the 8 who did find them, 7 did so only when the
  window was maximized. https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-
desktop/2011-April/002970.html (Usability testing results of Ubuntu
11.10 or 12.04 have never been published, but this part of the design
  did not change.)

Do not confuse this bug with bug 682788, which is about adding an
option for visibility. Adding any options would not fix this bug,
which is about menus being hidden *by default*.

  -
  Desired change:

Implement the 'Enhanced Menu' project for 12.10. This project will
address the issues described in this bug and also issues described in
the duplicates of this bus. Note the 'official' bug that tracks the
implementation of this project is bug #682788

The following options will be added to 'System Settings/Appearance':

  ---
  Menus
  Location: Global/Local
  Visibility: Hidden/Always displayed
  ---

More details to follow during the 12.10 cycle... ;-)
