[Dx4win] Win2K NTFS??
>> 2.) Presently I'm running DX4WIN on my PC with Win2K Pro with a FAT32 file >> system... Has anyone converted over to NTFS??? Can I do this on my new >> PC and move all my DX4WIN files onto this new NTFS/HD Help!!! By all means set up your new computer with NTFS! We have a lot of power glitches here in the Seattle area. I have 3 machines that run 24x7 - Win2K, WinXP-Pro and Linux. Both Win machine have NTFS on both the system and user partitions. The Linux machine runs the ext2fs. I recently had reinstall Linux. We had had a couple of dips big enough to take down the computers. The Win machines came right back. On the Linux box, Mandrake would not boot, or if it did would only come up in console mode. I would repair it by booting to my Debian partition and running fsck (file system check) to repair the disk. After the second repair it just "wasn't quite right". Bottom line, the Linux box now has a UPS. I'm not so worried about the Win boxes. The NTFS file system is very rugged compared to FAT and FAT32. I would also pass along a hint. When you install Win2K on the new computer don't use the whole disk as C:, Save part of it to use as D: and keep your data files there. After you install DX4WIN, move the log from the default location to D:\... That way if you ever *should* have to reinstall Win2K you can reformat C: and be *sure* that you're getting a clean install. All your data will be on the D: partition and you won't lose it in the reformat operation. Cheers, -rick
[Dx4win] Win2K NTFS??
phil, i can't really answer your first question other than to say to install dx4win and all your software from scratch. some software you can probably copy various .ini files over--depends on what you've got. dx4win may be one of those that will work. on the second, i run w2k with ntfs on several machines with excellent results. ntfs is a journaling file system and is much more robust than fat32. safer. you can convert a fat32 filesystem to ntfs under w2k, but it's better to just format from the beginning with ntfs during the w2k install if you're bringing up a new machine from scratch. if that's not an option, the conversion works too. 73, kenb, n5lpi - Original Message - From: "Phil Levin W2GE" <> To: Sent: Wednesday, January 02, 2002 4:42 PM Subject: [Dx4win] Win2K NTFS?? > Hopefully this posts!!! [Dx4win] Hamvention "Special Achievement" award
Hi, I think Al deserves our support for his nomination and any financial contribution you can make. Paul --- Each year the Dayton Hamvention (http://www.hamvention.org/) recognizes three amateurs for their outstanding contributions to the amateur radio field. To quote their web site, "Do you know an outstanding amateur in your club, community, or from on-the-air contacts? Does this person excel in some phase of amateur radio? Do you feel this person deserves world-wide recognition"? One of the awards, the "Special Achievement" award, we think should go to Al Waller, K3TKJ, the owner and founder of Qsl.net and Qth.net. Why nominate Alan Waller, K3TKJ for the 2002 Dayton Hamvention Special Achievement award? The Qsl.net domain was created by Alan in the winter of 1996 as a free service to amateur operators around the world. Al did this to give back something to a hobby that has meant so much to him over the past 40 years. Qsl.net, with the later additions of Qth.net, Swl.net, and dx.qsl.net, has grown by word of mouth to be the largest site devoted totally to Amateur Radio on the Internet. Qsl.net now receives over one millions hits per day and there are 69,000 individual and club web pages hosted on the system. There are over one million emails handled daily for the 135,000 hams with @qsl.net email addresses. QTH.NET is the host for more than 900 email reflector groups that are used by 400,000 people. This was, and still is, a hobby for Al, with much of the operating expense coming out of his own pocket. A small percentage of the users now contribute to the annual budget of over $25,000 What Alan Waller has given to the radio hobby is priceless. His unfailing devotion, unbelievable generosity and love of Amateur Radio is deserving of being nominated for the Special Achievement award. While others may have done something more spectacular, nobody has done anything that has helped so many in the world of radio ever before in this planet's history. So we ask you, please nominate Alan Waller, K3TKJ for the Special Achievement award, and let him know much we all appreciate his gift to Amateur Radio. The web site for making nominations is: http://www.hamvention.org/nominate.htm Please fill out the nomination form now as the deadline of Jan 31st is drawing near. I lost mine recently as well. I changed to a faster computer and I thought that was the problem. Anyway, the new computer has a nice set of speakers, so I just changed to voice announcements. They work. Interestingly, the system beep still works for alerts other than for new countrys.Maybe when we find Bin Laden, he'll spill the beans on it! Try turning on the Packet Cluster Beep command. Type Set/beep to turn it on, or Set/nobeep to turn it off. Additionally, the "use bell command" in DX4WIN packet 1 preferences must be checked. de Vic, AE5DX Logging and station control at AE5DX is accomplished using DX4WIN, version 5.03 - Original Message - From: "KC4ALG J Sartain" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Sent: Tuesday, January 01, 2002 9:11 PM Subject: Re: [Dx4win] No System Beep > I have checked my preferences settings, sent commands to the cluster I log > onto, gotten advice over the reflector, and even burned ashes to read over > tea leaves. [Dx4win] DX4WIN and Windows XP
Hello DX4WIN-ers, I installed Windows XP today and have the following problem: computer does not see the radio on port 4 (it is on add PCI card). But other software (WriteLog and MMTTY) works right and I can control the radio via COM 4. Next, when I press F9 key (even if radio is desabled in preferences of DX4WIN) I get the warning window with information: "Could not open CW driver" - after press OK the same warning window pop-up for second time. It closes, when I press OK again. But I do not use "CW Keyer Interface" option in "Radio" setup under preferences (even I am CW guy). I reinstalled DX4WIN and still the same.. My setup is: Windows XP Home Edition, AMD Athlon 1,4, 512MB RAM, FT-1000MP. Do I need any extra driver? What do you think about this problem? Best 73's Pawel, SP7PS SN7N in contests
[Dx4win] No System Beep
Missing beep update: I may not be the best case study since I had a hard drive crash a couple of weeks ago. I had to reinstall the upgrade for Windows 98SE, Norton AntiVirus 2001 and several other applications--so a lot of things changed. After I reinstalled everything, the system beeps worked for a while. One thing I do remember is that I did change the setup to allow CW alerts just to try them out. They worked fine, but I decided to go back to just plain system beeps. When I tried to change it back, all I hear now is a faint click--no beep.So I wonder if DX4WIN makes some change to a .dll when you select CW Alerts, but then does not reinstall the same .dll or .wav file if you try to go back. I am using Version 4.7.
