Re: [Dx4win] V8.05 PROBLEM

2013-08-20 Thread Art - W6KY
It sounds like you are just opening the same old V5 log 'again'...
Watch what you name your new log and where you save it.
Then open that log next time...
Save it as a 'save as' and rename it N4TJ-V8.05 as an example.
Then when you restart DX4WIN it will automatically open that
log.

Subject: [Dx4win] V8.05 PROBLEM

I recently had a PC crash and lost my backup save file, and decided to
upgrade from V503 to V805. My PC is having problems opening zip files,  and
I had a tough time opening the license key. After 4 days and some help from
Paul, I finally got it to load. I managed to salvage all but 150 or so of
the V503 log. These were loaded manually. I noticed that the countries
database was missing Z8 and closed the log to make the addition. When I did
this, the log file reverted back to the V503 log and those added were lost.
Every time I  close the log to access the countries database, the log
reverts back to V503. Could anyone shed some light on what I am doing wrong?
Tnx for help on this and the other questions I asked last week de N4TJ

Re: [Dx4win] USB to parallel port

2013-08-20 Thread ALAN ZACK
Yes, I stand corrected concerning the USB-to-Parallel vs. USB-to-Serial
mix-up. And yes the converters the RIGBlaster people sell are the Prolific
chipset which did not work for me for even something as simple as having the
PC read the rigs frequency with N1MM or WRITELOG. I was also told at Visalia
not to try the Prolific chipset with HRD.

For USB-to-Serial -- not David's question -- why would anyone buy anything
but a converter with an FTDI chipset? In 8+ years of supporting N1MM
Logger, I saw literally a hundred people with Prolific adapters who had
problems, versus ZERO with FTDI. Why mess around?

 Another vote for RT Systems.
 Expensive, but fewer headaches.
Some foks have had success with less expensive converters based on the
Prolific chipset, but some counterfeit chips along with a plethora of
drivers and driver updates make these iffy in my book.

I have had good results with both the MFJ and RT Systems convertors,
both available thru HRO and AES. I also have a couple from RIGBlaster
(West Mountain Radio). They will not work with my FT-2000 to a PC or
laptop.

When you try to Open a log in DX4WIN, you'll get the standard Windows
open file dialog. Click on the down-arrow (drop down) to the right of
File name:. Select the file you REALLY want to open. When saving
the log, make sure you are saving it to DX4W805 SAVE directory.

Could one of the DX4WIN community point me to the procedure for moving
DX4WIN8.05 to another PC? I just moved from my XP machine to a faster W7Pro
machine. I have the DX4WIN V7 CDROM and the V8.05 setup program to start
 from

I added some really easy instructions to the bottom of this page:

http://dx4win.ad1c.us/appnotes/

I probably should add links for these tips

I was expecting New Mode or Band to announce for either empty vertical or

Instead New Band or Mode announces for any open slot whether filled in for
either a band or a mode.

Did I misunderstand the purpose of New Band or Mode?

No, Bud, you didn't misunderstand. That's just the way it works. I
like it, so I can fill in all band/mode holes. I realize that's not
necessary for DXCC or any other award.

Re: [Dx4win] V8.05 PROBLEM

2013-08-20 Thread ALAN ZACK
Also after you save your log with all the latest changes go to FILE and open
the SAVE AS window and check the date and time of your .DXL file. It should
be the same date/time as when you just did the save. IF NOT, you are saving
the log in a different location. I learned this from a mistake I made years
ago when I accidentally changed my save location to an EXT HD as a means of
back up. After that my log kept getting saved to the EXT HD and not the
C:\DX4WIN file where it should have gone. After that, whenever I want to
back up my .DXL file I open the SAVE AS window, right click on my .DXL file
and then use the SEND TO function to send a copy of the file to other
devices.
