Re: [Dx4win] DX4WIN and Windows 7
Steve, I have DX4WIN version 8.05 installed on both Win7-64 bit and 32-bit. Runs with no problem. If you use the LPT port for CW keying you have to install a driver (No experience her, as I use my keyer and paddle). Install was no problem in the default folder. If you try to install in the Program Files or Program Files (x86) folder, you may run into some issues. Windows 7 denies browsing access to these folders by default and it causes problems with some apps, so I really recommend you install to C:\dx4winxxx. 73, Jesse, KA8YYZ --- dx4win-requ...@mailman.qth.net wrote: From: dx4win-requ...@mailman.qth.net To: dx4win@mailman.qth.net Subject: DX4WIN Digest, Vol 93, Issue 27 Date: Wed, 25 Jan 2012 12:06:06 -0500 Send DX4WIN mailing list submissions to dx4win@mailman.qth.net To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to dx4win-requ...@mailman.qth.net You can reach the person managing the list at dx4win-ow...@mailman.qth.net When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific than Re: Contents of DX4WIN digest... DX4WIN runs just find on Windows Vista/7, if you install it in the right place! If you are re-installing v.7 or earlier, the default installation path will be something like: C:\Program Files\dx4win I recommend NOT putting the program there, instead install here: C:\dx4win Windows Vista/7 puts special protections on the files in the Program Files directory, making them difficult to change or even find in some cases. You can google search for Windows Virtual Store and read more if you wish. DX4WIN v.8 installs in C:\dx4win by default. Remember that if you re-install from the original installation file, the data files will be as old as that file -- they are NOT updated when new files come out. Re: [Dx4win] DX4WIN and Windows 7
The main issue with Vista onwards is the Directory trees Program Files and Program files (x86) are not normally writable... a change long overdue. What I did to get around this was create a new directory tree I call programs and install there, along with some other ham stuff that would have the same issues. The only other issue is the installation of the LPT driver if you need it. Just follow the directions. My only problem is the serial keying port when DX4WIN thinks it's busy when you launch DX4WIN or Save Preferences. It's an occasional problem that I've not yet chased down. I am using DX4WIN 8.04 with Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. [Dx4win] DX4WIN 8, Windows 7 and Pure USB
I just built a very small computer to replace the giant workstation that has been heating my shack for more than a decade. That old Dell was a workhorse and held a compliment of extra serial boards for all those old serial connections we once used: packet, transceivers, etc. But, the Dell doesn't sound as good as it once did, and both the radio and the amp have been replaced, so it was time for the computer to go. I selected a very small case, the 7x7x3 M-350 case you see everywhere and the Zotac IONITX-A-U that was available used at a great price. I decided to use Windows 7 so I didn't have to change that for another ten years, and I could continue to use DX4WIN to control everything. The Zotac is a mini-iITX form-factor and uses very low power. It is quiet and cool and takes up little space. This motherboard doesn't have any of the old serial ports, so I was taking a gamble that all my equipment would interface over USB. Almost all of it worked, often with workarounds. The first USB-serial cables that I bought from a seller on eBay were failures. They seem to just be wire with connectors on the end, with not real circuit for adapting the USB bus to a serial port. Well, I didn't risk much on them. The second USB-serial cables were interesting. The Windows 7 system recognized them immediately and assigned them COM ports, but the system didn't seem to want to use both COM5 and COM6 at the same time, so neither my rotor nor my radio CAT worked with any stability. Turn off one or the other and it seemed better, but never use both. But I stumbled on a workaround. If I connected the USB-Hub in my monitor and then connected the USB-serial cable to that, things were more stable. The COM ports were higher, but they worked. In the end, I have the M2 rotor, Tentec Orion II CAT and Keyer working through USB. There is an occasional delay in first-character keying, but I think that might be Windows and not USB. I'll keep testing that to see how to improve it. One thing I haven't worked out is the USB-USB connection for the Alpha 9500. The Alpha Windows software is pretty sad and I didn't have time to try something useful, but in the end I really doubted I cared about talking computer-to-amp for something that was sitting on my desk. I know there are other solutions, like external keyers, hubs, etc, but this seems like a great first step. I'd also comment that the new look of DX4WIN 8 frames is nice. I don't see much different in the software yet, but things were familiar enough for me to work 4A4A pretty quickly tonight. 73, Byron __ Dx4win mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Dx4win@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Dx4win] DX4WIN on Windows 7 working now
Hi All, After everyone told me they didn't run as Admin, right click to get at that, etc, I uninstalled it again. It was about 12 attempts in two days. I downloaded DX4WIN again from the US site as the last time. This time I just ran it like I did with HRD, N1MM. I just double clicked like we install on XP . I had read in the archive about running DX4WIN as Admin. I installed DX4WIN , and received that yellow window again that said User Access Control at the top. This did not happen with N1MM or HRD. I clicked to go ahead. I then installed the MS C+++ and got a blue window asking to go ahead and clicked yes (I had gotten this before too) I then started DX4WIN 8.03 with no more pop ups or boing noises. I don't know what changed other than I didn't do the run as admin. Was that information in the archive superseded when 8.03 or the actual Win 7 was released ? Maybe it was from the RC ? The only difference is the DX4WIN icon does still show a blue shield on it whereas the Firefox etc don't . It seems normal now. The reason I did this was to try this out and see if it's worth changing. I actually don't care for the see through bars in the applications but I think I read those can be shut off.
