2015-11-04 Thread Radivoj Kar, F6GNZ via DX4WIN
Bernie,
There are many USB to parallel cables on eBay. Most of them work OK. HOWEVER:
with most laptops some printers have problem printing as the laptop USB current
is not sufficient. SOLUTION: use externally powered USB hub between laptop USB
port and the USB/parallel cable.
Concerning DX4WIN version you can check it y clicking on Help/About on top of
DX4WIN. The latest version is 8.05

Re: [Dx4win] USB to parallel port connector

2015-11-04 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

> Will USB to parallel port adapter work???

To the best of my knowledge *none* of the logging programs support
CW/PTT on a USB to *parallel port adapter*. The USB printer cables
typically use a special device driver to emulate a windows print
system and do not provide direct port access required by the LPT
CW/PTT drivers in the logging programs.

You can use a USB to *serial* cable with CW on DTR and PTT on RTS
driving a pair of resistor/transistor circuits - but that is quite
different than the USB to parallel printer cables and using LPT#.

Re: [Dx4win] USB to parallel port

2013-08-20 Thread ALAN ZACK
Yes, I stand corrected concerning the USB-to-Parallel vs. USB-to-Serial
mix-up. And yes the converters the RIGBlaster people sell are the Prolific
chipset which did not work for me for even something as simple as having the
PC read the rigs frequency with N1MM or WRITELOG. I was also told at Visalia
not to try the Prolific chipset with HRD.

For USB-to-Serial -- not David's question -- why would anyone buy anything
but a converter with an FTDI chipset? In 8+ years of supporting N1MM

problems, versus ZERO with FTDI. Why mess around?

The confusion continues. I'll save W4TV the effort of responding -
USB-to-Parallel is what we're talking about here, not USB-to-Serial.
David, you cannot key CW or do anything else involving switching
individual lines on a parallel port through a converter. The only
hardware I know of that will do this is the PIEXX SO2RXLAT, which costs
significantly more than the most elegant solution, K1EL's Winkeyer USB.
Try it, David - you won't be sorry.

Re: [Dx4win] USB to parallel port

2013-08-19 Thread O

Hello Dick,

Try Google 'usb serial adapter with ftdi chip' and see what pops up in your
area. There are several at a variety of prices - others may have suggestions
with which they have had success. Was not using mine (unbranded from a UK
source but supposed to be FTDI) for DX4 but it hit a snag after a windows
update for Vista messed up the driver. Had same with the much maligned
Prolific.

Another vote for RT Systems.
Expensive, but fewer headaches.
Some foks have had success with less expensive converters based on the
Prolific chipset, but some counterfeit chips along with a plethora of
drivers and driver updates make these iffy in my book.

I have had good results with both the MFJ and RT Systems convertors,
both

available thru HRO and AES. I also have a couple from RIGBlaster (West
Mountain Radio). They will not work with my FT-2000 to a PC or laptop.

Re: [Dx4win] USB to parallel port

2013-08-15 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

USB to parallel adapters are not port mapped devices and as such
they will not work with software like DX4Win that use direct port
writes. Unless you are using a laptop with no expansion bus, your
best solution is an add-on serial/parallel card for either PCI or
PCIe bus.

Speaking of which, I have a brand new SYBA PCI-E parallel port card that
I don't need, and will send to the first person who comes up with the
postage - estimated $5 US, or tell me your QTH if abroad.

Re: [Dx4win] USB to parallel port

2013-08-15 Thread Jim - N4ST
Don't know about USB to parallel, but I use an FTDI chipset USB to RS232
converter and then a photo-coupler interface to key my rigs and it works
fine with DX4WIN.
