[e-gold-list] RE: name contest

2001-12-12 Thread RJ LeVeque

This is a hoot. I'll put up ten grams of gold to the person who comes up
with the best name. In one of the sessions at the conference we'll take a
vote on which is the best and I'll pay 10.0 AUG, gg, or whatever, to the
winner. (This doesn't of course mean that anyone actually has to use it.)

 Ken

Ok, I'll give it a shot... how about:

graug

-or-

goldaur

-or-

gramaur

[e-gold-list] Perl source, name contest, historical prices.

2001-12-12 Thread Dmitry Salnikov

Hello All,

1. Updated Perl source for access control is available for
download at my site, user names collision checking procedure
for selling of subscriptions is improved and the code is
polished and sample files are provided also.

2. The Sun is the symbol which is common for all nations,
and there exist old international (partial) name for it --
The Sol -- which is now --

Solntse (noun) in Russian,
Solar (adjective) in English,
Le Soleil (noun) in French,
anyone more? ...

The Sun is yellow like gold,
the Sun is beautiful like gold,
The Sun is round like gold coin,
the Sun can benefit like gold,
the Sun can hurt like gold,
..

Gold embroidery on blue background is like the Sun in the sky,
this colour combination is the royal one in many countries.

It may be a good idea
to create the name for gold monetary unit
based on the Sol part in the words above.

It may be also a good idea to use old Italian
monetary unit soldo as another part for construction,
and may be dollar as well.

Something like --

sol, soldo, solar, sola, solaris, solarius,
solaro, solla, sollo, sollar, sollaro, ...

The name should be
easy to say and easy to understand
and easy to write without errors.

And the name should be good for
both marketing and public relations purposes.

O in the Sol is suitable for graphic design,
it is round like both Sun and gold coin.

3. There is an interesting site about old prices,
some of them are very similar to modern ones --

What did Vernor Vinge call them in The Peace War and The Ungoverned? :-).

Cheers,

Jesus Christ, you've read that? What a LEGEND, RAH!!!

He calls them gAu. As in He pulled a handful of gAu notes out of
his cashbox and shoved them at the boy.

That looks great in print, but I dunno if it's the best thing to say
with your mouth.

If I'm not mistaken, at other points in _Across Realtime_ characters
just say grams in dialogue .. I'm not sure though.

Actually gee ay you probably IS the best name! gAu.

I doubt it can be improved on if that's what Vinge says.

I'll just put away my signed first edition now.. :O
