Ian, The process has been the following : - Get the detailed information about the sender from Western Union's records (that was like pulling teeth !) - It appeared that funds indeed came from a Geronia Bowman. However, the real phone number was 941-371-xx97 (was 371-7197 in the order) - I called that number, and spoke with Geronia Bowman who answered the phone - Asked if she had ordered e-gold from us - She said : Ordered what ? - I asked her is she had bought something on the internet and paid for it via Western Union - She said : Yes... a computer - I asked her to email me what she had bought, and all possible details about the Seller - She did just that - We are now returning Funds back to her - We will press charges againts the would be fraudster at State Federal levels Those who would like to contact her for additional information, please email me in private as she emailed me the HTML description of the computer she was supposed to buy from [EMAIL PROTECTED] By the way, HER email is an AOL email addy... I wish to take this opportunity to point out that at AnyGoldNow, we don't just turn away suspect orders : We ACTIVELY fight scam, as we believe it is the pleague of the Gold community. It is costly, and it is a dirty job (we have been flooded with virus attacks of all sorts since this thing started), but somebody's got to do it. Also, in my communications with her, I couldn't resist asking if she really expected to be able to buy a (as described) Dell Inspiron 8200 P4-M 2.0GHz, 512MB 60 GB HARD DRIVE,CD-RW/DVD, 15 Ultra Sharp UXGA TFT Display, FACTORY SEALED NOTEBOOKS, BRAND NEW, In Original Manufacturer BOXES, NOT REFURBISHED, bundled with Windows XP Pro, MS Office XP Pro, Norton Antivirus 2002OEM..., etc, etc... by sending $ 1,460 (+$92 WU Fees) to some guy she had never heard about (me) in France via Western Union ! (?!?) Regards, Patrick, AnyGoldNow Congratulations, Patrick. (...) maybe you should reveal more about how you verified that the real payer did not intend to be purchasing e-gold for the requested account (but rather purchasing a computer on eBay), The playing out of this scenario in public will hopefully serve to reduce the recurrence of this type of scam (as evidently many scammers read the e-gold list)! [e-gold-list] Re: bullion coin buying price watch
Tim Wood Wants to tell about how in SAN FRANCISCO -- Crowne Gold is a private e-gold company that has begun to market itself more aggressively to win market share. It is difficult to differentiate financial product when the base is digital gold, but Crowne is managing to set itself apart with some interesting ideas. The biggest objection to digital gold is that it is somewhat oxymoronic the purpose of buying bullion is in the security of possession. Otherwise, you're just holding another proxy for the metal with significant risks. Crowne has taken the unusual step of having coins produced by the Coeur dElene mint, which you can have sent to you instead of holding the digital version. That is not unique, but its a good complement to Crownes other products a Mastercard linked to your gold account and a portable electronic wallet. The Mastercard is another relatively straightforward idea that allows account holders to treat their gold as cash. The catch is that the fractional cost of owning a Mastercard disappears since the user pays a commission on each transaction. Likewise the portable electronic wallet, but it is a promising development in providing a workable person-to-person transaction system. The wallet is really little more than a smart card reader not unlike those proliferating among merchants as the major card issuers bed down the global standards for smart cards. Ultimately, a cell phone is a good substitute for a separate wallet since it is already a smart card reader, but it will take a few more years before we saw wallet phones in widespread use. Even before then, e-gold merchants have a hurdle to overcome in terms of the conflicting messages consumers are receiving. The traditional approach is that gold is a store of value; something to be packed away for a rainy day or passed on to another generation. Yet e-gold companies cannot prosper without refining that message. They need velocity rather than stagnation, but that is, at face value, antithetical to the traditional view of gold you're not supposed to spend your gold but to hoard it. There is no point hoarding gold in an electronic form because you are exposed to the balance sheet risk of the service provider and the constant threat of expropriation. Always take possession if you feel obliged to own bullion; otherwise you are last in the creditors queue when something goes wrong. So the e-gold providers need gold to be money in the truest sense. Something that buys everyday goods and services. The costs are far too high still for people to feel comfortable with that. Consider that you lose 5% of the value of your purchase from Crowne, plus another $1 per ounce, plus delivery or storage fees. Indeed, the premium to actually take delivery is prohibitive. I like my Visa and Mastercard because they cost me next to nothing the merchant bears the transaction cost and storage is free to positive (unless there's a negative balance). Of course, being cheap is a double edged sword. When the dollar gets too cheap the benefits of its frictionlessness become moot. Crowne tries to reassure customers through monthly audits. However, one feels uneasy its a West Indies address and a company whose name is unfamiliar. It is a declaration rather than a real audit proving ounces on hand. There needs to be a sword of Damocles hanging over the auditor; this does not give the impression of the type of consumer leverage required to have absolute trust. Trust remains the bug bear, e-gold needs a big, big balance sheet to give customers comfort. Frankly, I hate the fact that most of the operations are in tax havens. The reasons to do so are understandable, but Digital gold is a great idea, but it remains prohibitively expensive in so many ways. To be money it must compete with money; the dollar is more competitive. Since I'm not a frequent user, i.e. gazillions of transactions a day, it's only an annoyance to me. To people who rely on e-gold for substantial commerce, I suspect it is getting very old very quickly. Today, it seemed to work the opposite as well, in as well as out. Funded my TheGoldCasino account, after several tries (try again in a few minutes), but they couldn't get my winnings (yes, Jim, I won again -- didn't double my stake this time, though, I TRIPLED it) back to my e-gold account. I'll be trying again shortly. Not that I don't trust TheGoldCasino, mind you (I've never had a bad experience there, even on the rare occasions when I've lost), but I like my gold all in one place, preferably GSR's vaults, when I'm not using it. Especially my casino winnings. I might get tempted to break my own rule about not breaking into the original stake once I've doubled it. This suggests that the problem may not centered on particular accounts, since the spends were problematic in BOTH directions. And now, I think I'll plug MY TheGoldCasino referral link (they pay out gold when people come and play through referral links -- not based on win or loss, either, but on number of hands played): http://3657147.thegoldcasino.com For what it's worth, they also give away a monthly door prize. You generate drawing entries by playing (once again, based on how much you play, not how much you win or lose or the amount of your bets). This month, the prize is 50 DVDs of your choice and a player. I never thought I liked online casinos until I played at TheGoldCasino, but it's a ripping good time. Especially when I win.
