The Ecological Society of America’s SEEDS (Strategies for Ecology
Education, Diversity, and Sustainability) program is pleased to announce
the upcoming Spring 2009 Field Trip. Student Field Trips meet the SEEDS
mission by providing exciting opportunities for underrepresented
undergraduate students to explore their interest in ecology. Field trips
allow students to spend four to seven days at an ecologically significant
site, such as a field station, research laboratory, or national park,
learning about the science of ecology, exploring career options, and
seeing the practical applications of ecology.
The 2009 SEEDS Spring Field Trip will take place from June 7-13 at the
Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory (RMBL) in Crested Butte, Colorado.
This field trip provides a unique opportunity for students to learn from,
and perhaps contribute to, scientific research programs taking place at
the research station.

undergraduates. It is very user-friendly, and free.

 Hi Jacqueline,

The software R that was mentioned is very powerful, but I would hesitate
to use it for undergraduates. For the type of exercise you describe I have
used a combination of Microsoft Excel coupled with the PopTools add-on by
 Greg Hood:

 http://www.cse.csiro.au/poptools/

It does all the life table to projection model conversions you could ask
for. It works with Excel 2007 as well.

[ECOLOG-L] Freeware for undergrad ecology course?

 Dear Ecologger

I'm looking for a free and easy to use software to use in my ecology
course. For one lab exercice, my students have to fill in cohort tables
(survivorship, mortality, fecundity etc.) to draw different survivorship
curves. To make this exercice more interesting and applied, I'd like to
find a program that would allow the students to enter this data and get a
graph back, that shows them the popultation increas/decrease over the next
100-200 years. With this program they could play with the data and see
what implications different management decisions (ie protecting early life
stage vs. late life stages) would have for this population.

Does anyone know of such a free/shareware? I appreciate your help.
 Sincerely,

[ECOLOG-L] Urgent need for one volunteer for Laysan Island Restoration Project

2009-02-12 Thread Jeff F Zimpfer
I am posting this for a colleague and do not have further information about the
project. Please direct all questions to Cindy. Her contact information is
below.

We lost a volunteer scheduled to go to Laysan in March on a 6-month assignment
and are urgently looking for a new recruit. The ideal candidate is a college
graduate looking for quality field experience who is able to live and work hard
with a very small group of people on a remote island.

From March 1-Sept 30 2009

This is a remote field assignment. The breakdown of work load is: 15 percent
basic Monitoring of seabird, shorebird, landbird and plants using standard
operating procedures where following detailed written instructions is important
so that data can be used for population trend analysis; 20 percent endemic and
endangered plant propagation, outplanting and monitoring; 30 percent invasive
plant removals with Aquamaster (rodeo) and Garlon 3A; 15 percent camp
maintenance and 20 percent data entry, report writing and debriefing with
biologists and managers in Honolulu office after field season completed.
Laysan is a really remarkable place to work. We work hard but are inspired by
the wonders of nature all around us at Laysan. The crew size on Laysan is a
total of 4 people (2 Biological Science Technicians and 2 volunteers). The
volunteer positions are training positions to develop the applied experience
for the Biological Science Technician positions. USFWS provides volunteers with
transportation (home to Laysan and return), housing, food and clothing. Please
respond ASAP. Please send resume with current references phone numbers to

[ECOLOG-L] Two PhD Research Assistantships

2009-02-12 Thread Jeffrey Gibson Miner
Two PhD-student research assistantships available.
1) Research assistantship available immediately to participate in a NOAA Sea
Grant project using otolith chemistry to quantify mixed stock distribution,
philopatry, and fisheries exploitation of steelhead trout in Lake Erie. This
project involves joint collaboration between Jeff Miner (Aquatic Ecology
Fisheries Laboratory) and John Farver (Geology) in close association with state
and federal fisheries biologists and hatchery managers. Two years of research
assistantship support are available to a top PhD student.
2) The primary purpose of this project is to identify characteristics
necessary to classify reservoirs in terms of natural reproduction for yellow
perch and reservoirs that can be stocked successfully with yellow perch
fingerlings from hatcheries (up to three years of support). This project starts
this summer and involves multivariate assessment of abiotic and biotic
characteristics in Ohio reservoirs, including considerable field work and
quantitative analyses.
Experimental spin-off research is expected by graduate students in both
projects.

We seek highly motivated and collaborative individuals who desire to combine
fieldwork with lab research involving typical aquatic biology and ecology
approaches as well as more specialized analytical chemistry. Desired
qualifications include a BS/MS in one of several relevant fields of study (e.g.
biology, ecology, fisheries) with coursework in chemistry and statistics, field
experience in aquatic or fish ecology, ability to work independently and
collaboratively, and comfort applying interdisciplinary approaches to questions
in aquatic ecology and fisheries biology. Competitive stipends (including
health insurance) with tuition waivers are available. Applications will be
accepted on a continuing basis until qualified individuals are identified, but
materials are strongly encouraged by April 1, 2009.
Applicants should send a letter that summarizes their background, educational
goals, and
statement of research interests, along with your transcripts and curriculum
vitae (with contact information for three references) to: Dr. Jeffrey Miner
