“Next Generation Pteridology: An International Conference on Lycophyte
Fern Research”
Presented by the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History,
Department of Botany
In collaboration with the United States Botanic Garden
Supported by the American Fern Society, the Journal of Systematics and
Evolution, the International Organization of Plant Biosystematists, the
International Association of Plant Taxonomy, and the Cuatrecasas Family
Foundation

The past decade has seen remarkable advances in our understanding of fern
and lycophyte biology. New sources of data have emerged and novel methods
for analyzing these data are being developed. At the same time, many
traditional approaches have been revitalized as their unique and specific
contributions are more fully realized. With a recent influx of students and
early career researchers, the international pteridological community
continues to grow. The pace of scientific discovery is accelerating, new
parts of the globe are being included, and the conservation of these
important species in a rapidly changing world is being investigated. This
conference aims to bring together the world’s pteridologists, and others
with an interest in ferns and lycophytes, to celebrate the progress to date
and to forecast developments still on the horizon.

An opening symposium will kick things off on June 1st at the National
Museum of Natural History. Free and open to the public, this symposium will
feature invited speakers exploring a variety of topics, from fern genomics
and development to horticulture and conservation. An evening reception and
poster session at the United States Botanic Garden will provide an informal
setting to delve deeper into current pteridological research. The
conference will then continue for four additional days of focused
scientific talks and workshops.

Abstracts for poster and oral presentations may be submitted online at
http://botany.si.edu/sbs/. The deadline for abstract submission is April 1.

Register for the symposium, the conference, or both at
http://botany.si.edu/sbs.

[ECOLOG-L] Postdoc: Bioinformatics of host-microbe systems, U OR

2015-03-05 Thread David Inouye

Postdoctoral Research Scholar: Bioinformatics of Host-Microbe Systems
Institute of Ecology and Evolution
Posting: 15063
Location: Eugene
Closes: Open Until Filled

We are seeking a postdoctoral research scholar
with significant expertise in bioinformatics and
research interests at the intersection of
mathematics, biology and computer science to join
the Microbial Ecology Theory in Animals (META)
Center at the University of Oregon
(meta.uoregon.edu). The META Center is an
NIH-funded Center of Excellence in Systems
Biology, focused on the development and
application of biological theory, integrated with
empirical studies, to better understand
host-microbe systems. Every multicellular
organism is associated with a diverse array of
microbes, and although it has become evident that
these microbes contribute significantly to their
hosts and that hosts influence their microbiota
- the biological mechanisms underlying these
interactions are still unclear. The META Center
aims to generate fundamental new knowledge
regarding these interactions by integrating
concepts from genomics, developmental biology,
ecology and evolution, and by developing new
approaches for imaging, mathematical modeling,
systems and functional biology, and analysis of next generation sequence data.

The ideal candidates will have a demonstrated
record of past scholarly success and experience
in developing and applying computational methods
in the analysis of complex data sets, especially
those that address problems that are
computationally challenging and data intensive.
Preference will be given to candidates who can
work independently as well as a member of a
research team. Optimal candidates will be willing
to work in a highly interactive group of
researchers spanning a wide range of disciplines,
and be eager to challenge themselves by working
in novel areas bridging mathematics, biology and
computer science. A strong interest in addressing
fundamental questions about host-microbe systems
using insights from ecological and evolutionary
theory is especially desirable. This position
also provides an opportunity to develop
innovative curriculum for undergraduate and
graduate level courses in bioinformatics. The
successful candidate will support and enhance a
diverse learning and working environment.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. from a relevant
discipline, such as physics, mathematics,
statistics, computer science, ecology, evolution,
systems biology, microbiology, genomics or a
related field. The positions are initially for a
1 year term with the possibility for renewal
contingent upon satisfactory performance. The
start date is flexible, but preference will be
given to applicants who can begin before June,
2015. Please email questions regarding these
positions, the META Center, or its scientific
mission to any of the META Center scientists listed below:

Karen Guillemin (kguil...@uoregon.edu)

William Cresko (wcre...@uoregon.edu)

John Conery (con...@uoregon.edu)

To apply, please include as a single attachment:

(1) a brief cover letter explaining your background and career interests

(2) CV (including publications)

(3) names and contact information for three references.

Submit materials to ie2j...@uoregon.edu. Subject: META Posting 15063

To ensure consideration, please submit
applications by April 2, 2015. This position will remain open until filled.

Women and members of groups underrepresented in
science are encouraged to apply. We invite
applications from qualified candidates who share our commitment to diversity.

Avian Research Assistant Supervisor- point counts, demographic, arthropod,
and vegetation sampling in Northern New England, near Millinocket, ME
The project is a collaboration between USGS Maine Cooperative Fish and
Wildlife Research Unit at the University of Maine to study birds in
spruce-fir forests throughout New England and their response to forest
management. This study will focus primarily on birds in softwood dominated
forests, and field research will be conducted in the working forest landscape.

The selected applicant will supervise and conduct avian point count surveys,
forested vegetation surveys, arthropod surveys, targeted spruce budworm
surveys, and demographic observation of Bay-breasted Warblers. Duties also
include camp, vehicle, and RV maintenance. Please send a CV or resume with a
cover letter detailing interest in the position, relevant experience, and
the contact information for at least 3 references as a single document to
the email indicated below. Include in the subject line: “Supervisor
application”.

Qualifications: The ability to identify forest birds of New England by both
sight and sound is essential. Experience with multi-species point count
surveys for birds, vegetation surveys, arthropod surveys, bird demographic
surveys, data entry in Microsoft Excel or Access are preferred. Enrollment
or completion of a college degree in biology, wildlife, zoology, or related
field also preferred. An ability to independently plan daily and weekly
logistics while supervising four other technicians is essential. See
additional qualifications in Student Field Worker section above.

Compensation: Employees will be provided housing in an RV at Telos
Checkpoint/Clayton Lake Maine, two vehicles for fieldwork use, and a wage
ranging $11-13 per hour depending on experience and completion of an
undergraduate degree. Research sites are remote, and numerous outdoor
recreational opportunities are located nearby such as hiking, fishing,
canoeing, kayaking, and moose watching. Camp often has access to internet
and occasional cell phone reception 4-5 days per week.

[ECOLOG-L] Host workshops, classes, and conferences at the Rocky Mtn Bio Lab in Gothic, CO

2015-03-05 Thread Ian Billick
With the completion of our new Community Center, RMBL now has the
facilities to host workshops, classes, and conferences in August
(smaller groups) and September. We are particularly interested in
groups that have potential synergies with our education and research
programs, though we are happy to host any science or education-related
group. Located in the central Rockies, 8 miles from the resort town of
Crested Butte and 45 minutes from the Gunnison airport (4 hrs from
Denver and 3.5 hrs from Colorado Springs), we can house up to 135 people
onsite with conference facilities than can seat up to 200 people. It's
an affordable, but beautiful location that is immersed in a rich history
of ecological and evolutionary research/education. You can find more
info at http://www.rmbl.org/conferencesgroups/. Feel free to contact
me, Ian Billick, directly with questions or to check availability.
