[ECOLOG-L] PhD positions at the Univ. Montana in physiological ecology and climate change

2015-10-16 Thread Woods, Art
The Woods lab at the University of Montana in Missoula is looking to recruit
Ph.D. students interested in physiological ecology and climate change.

Current research projects in the lab seek to understand the physiological
ecology of plant-insect interactions, to link broad-scale climate data to the
microclimates relevant to small ectotherms, and to predict how ectotherms
(primarily insects) will perform in those microclimates both now and in the
future. These topics are addressed using a combination of field and lab
experiments. We're also starting to do more analyses of large gridded data sets
on climate, so students with strong computational and programming skills (e.g.,
R, python) are encouraged to apply.

The University of Montana is home to a strong collection of faculty researching
ecology and evolution. The Division of Biological Sciences hosts an excellent
graduate program in Organismal Biology and Ecology (OBE) with an emphasis on
interdisciplinary training in evolution, genetics, ecology, organismal biology,
and behavior. Missoula is a great college town in the heart of the Northern
Rocky Mountains.

For more information on the Woods lab please visit:
http://woods-lab.dbs.umt.edu/cms/

Interested students are encouraged to email Dr. Woods (art.wo...@mso.umt.edu).
Please include a brief description of your research interests and a CV in your
email. Note that applications for Fall 2016 admission to the OBE program must
be submitted by December 1st.

[ECOLOG-L] International course on Geometric Morphometrics and Ontogeny, May 30-June 1, Barcelona (Spain).

2015-10-16 Thread Soledad De Esteban Trivigno
Dear Colleagues,

Registration is open for the course “Studying Ontogeny at Different Levels Using
Geometric Morphometrics - 3rd Edition”.

Dates: May 30-June 1, 2016.

Instructor: Dr. Kieran McNulty (University of Minnesota, United States of
America).

This course will provide a basic introduction to geometric morphometric
analyses, with an emphasis on using this tool kit to address questions related
to growth, development, and evolution. Simple characterizations of multivariate
ontogeny will give way to more complicated methods for visualizing and comparing
different patterns of growth and development. From here, we will take up the
idea of changes in ontogeny as a mechanism for producing evolutionary change.
Using landmark data, it is possible to address many of the issues related to
evolutionary development, but it will also become clear that the basic
formulation of traditional evo-devo models lose relevance in the complex
datasets available through modern digitisation and morphometric analysis. We
will end by discussing the difficulties and misconceptions in interpreting
morphometric analyses of ontogeny, and introduce some of the advanced topics in
ontogeny that morphometricians are beginning to address.

A basic knowledge in statistics, Geometric Morphometrics and personal computers
is required. All participants must bring their own personal laptop with some
software installed.

More information and registration:
http://www.transmittingscience.org/courses/gm/ontogeny-and-gm/).

The course will be held in the Sabadell facilities of the Institut Català de
Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont (Barcelona, Spain) and is co-organized by
Transmitting Science and the Institut Català de Paleontologia M. Crusafont.
Places are limited and will be covered by strict registration order.

Please feel free to distribute this information between your colleagues if you
consider it appropriate.

[ECOLOG-L] Faster way to remove bubbles from gelatin placed on microscope slides

Hello Ecolog-Listers:

I have several hundred temporary slide preparations of insects body parts
mounted on aqueous gelatin. As we prepare to photograph, we have been told
to completely cover the specimen with the gelatin mounting and place a cove
slip on top. As we melt new gelatin to comply, the process is invariably
creating annoying bubbles, regardless of how gently we heat the gelatin.

If we stick to gelatin, can someone suggest a method to minimize bubbles
other than manually removing them?

Of we switch mounting medium remember, all specimens are temp. mounted i n

you recommend that does not (ideally) create bubbles (ideally cheap).

If you have any suggestions, please feel free to email me directly:

POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW IN POPULATION BIOLOGY--The Center for Population Biology at
UC Davis
invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Population Biology,
broadly defined to include
ecology, phylogenetics, comparative biology, population genetics, and
evolution. We particularly
encourage applications from candidates that have recently completed, or will
soon complete, their
PhD.

will be a fully
participating member in the Center for Population Biology and will be expected
to have an
independent research program that bridges the interests of two or more CPB
faculty research
groups. We strongly encourage candidates to contact appropriate faculty
sponsors before applying.
We also ask that each Fellow propose a workshop, discussion or lecture series
that they could offer
to the community of population biologists at UC Davis; faculty sponsors or the
Director of CPB,
Artyom Kopp, can provide additional input on this aspect of the fellowship. For
samples of past
workshop abstracts and more information about UC Davis programs in population
biology, see
http://cpb.ucdavis.edu/CPB%20Postdoc%20Fellowship.html.

ONLINE APPLICATION: Interested candidates should submit a cover letter, CV, a
short (1-2 page)
description of research accomplishments, a short (1-2 page) description of

[ECOLOG-L] Post-doctoral opportunity in Quantitative Community Ecology—University of Florida

2015-10-16 Thread Ben Baiser
Post-doctoral opportunity in Quantitative Community Ecology—University of
Florida

REPOST: The Baiser lab of community ecology in the Department of Wildlife
Ecology and Conservation at the University of Florida
(http://www.wec.ufl.edu/faculty/baiser/) is now accepting applications for a
Post-doctoral position. The 2-year position offers a unique opportunity to
work with a highly interdisciplinary team that includes a Community
Ecologist, Bayesian Statistician, Computational Phylogeneticist, and
Computer Scientist. The NSF funded project aims to integrate data from
ecological networks (e.g., food webs), phylogenetics, functional traits, and
community composition to better understand how anthropogenic drivers alter
biodiversity patterns. The successful applicant will work with data sets
from wide ranging systems such as pitcher plant food webs, island bird
communities, and tropical forest plant communities, among others. This
position provides the opportunity to hone current skills and develop new
skills through interactions with the interdisciplinary research team.

Qualifications: Qualified applicants will be highly motivated, independent,
enthusiastic, and will hold a PhD. in Ecology or a closely related field
with a specific focus on quantitative research. Demonstrated proficiency in
R statistical programming and the successful ability to communicate research
results (i.e., publications and oral presentations) are required. Experience
with network analysis, analyzing functional and phylogenetic diversity, and
general knowledge of food web ecology are major pluses.

Salary: $44,000/year plus fringe benefits

Start Date: Flexible, but ideally between January 1, 2016 and September 1,
2016.

How to Apply:

Applicants should send the following information with the subject line
