[ECOLOG-L] Graduate Assistantship in Forest Nutrient Cycling

2016-06-29 Thread Forest Ecology
Ruth Yanai is seeking new graduate students (MS or PhD) to participate in a
large collaborative project investigating above and belowground carbon
allocation, nutrient cycling, and tradeoffs involved in multiple resource
allocation. The Multiple Element Limitation in Northern Hardwood Ecosystems
(MELNHE) project has field sites located at Hubbard Brook, Jeffers Brook,
and Bartlett Experimental Forests in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.
Since 2011, thirteen stands have been receiving N, P, N, and control
treatments in 0.25-ha plots, with six stands receiving Ca treatments.
Research in the MELNHE project includes soil respiration, soil
mineralization, beech bark disease, leaf production by species, foliar
nutrient resorption, water use, mycorrhizae, forest productivity (among
species and stand age classes), and snail and arthropod diversity. More
information on the project can be found at http://www.esf.edu/melnhe.

We welcome inquiries from prospective students interested in forest ecology,
nutrient cycling, and uncertainty analysis. Applicants should be self-
motivated, excited to work as part of a multi-investigator project, have
laboratory and field experience, and be comfortable living and working in a
group setting. A field crew blog from previous years is available at
http://shoestringproject.wordpress.com/.

Ideally, students will be able to start in July 2016, to become familiar
with the field sites and our research activities before starting classes in
late August. Come help take sap flow measurements!

Funding will consist of a combination of research and teaching
assistantships. A stipend, full tuition waiver, health insurance, and a
summer position with the field crew in New Hampshire will be provided.
Prospective students may apply to the Department of Forest and Natural
Resources Management or the Graduate Program in Environmental Science, both
at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, Syracuse, NY.

We appreciate communicating with students as part of the application
process. Students are encouraged to review MELNHE related data and
publications and supply their own ideas for research in relation to the
project. Prospective students should begin that conversation by requesting
the password for Ruth's project materials from Mary Hagemann at
forestecol...@esf.edu

[ECOLOG-L] 11th North American Forest Ecology Workshop (NAFEW), June 19 - 22, 2017, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada - Call for Special Session Proposals

2016-06-29 Thread Anne McIntosh
Please direct inquiries to nafe...@ualberta.ca

.

*Call for Special Session Proposals*

*11th North American Forest Ecology Workshop (NAFEW)Edmonton, Alberta,
CanadaJune 19 – 22, 2017*

*Proposal Deadline: Thursday, September 30, 2016 5:00 PM MDT*

*Proposals that are incomplete or received after the deadline will not be
considered.*

*About Special Sessions*

We invite proposals for Special Sessions for the 11th NAFEW in 2017. These
sessions are distinguished from other organized sessions in that they are
more explicitly integrated, provide an overall synthesis on a specific
topic, and have broad enough appeal to generate large audiences at the
meeting.

Proposals are encouraged to address the meeting theme, “Sustaining Forests:
>From Restoration to Conservation”. Any timely and coherent subject of broad
interest to forest ecology will be considered. We also welcome proposals
that explore interdisciplinary connections of forest sustainability in a
social or economic context.

At the conference we have space for approximately 6 Special Sessions, each
running for 2 hours. The organization of the special session should include
from 3-6 talks, each talk should be in increments of 15 minutes (e.g., 3
talks each 30 minutes in length, or 6 talks each 15 minutes in length). All
special sessions must include a 30 minute general discussion period to end
the special session.

*All proposals must include:*

Title of Special Session

Principal organizer (Name, institution, email) - this person is the point
of contact for the session and responsible for communicating with speakers
and ensuring that individual abstracts are being submitted by the deadline

Co-organizers (Names, institutions, emails)

Moderator (Name, institution, email)

Speakers (Names, affiliations, emails, and tentative talk titles) - only
speakers who have been contacted and have committed to the session should
be listed

Special session description (< 500 words):

It should focus on the theme of the special session and include a session
justification. It may include background information, goals, objectives,
importance, and potential interest to the main theme of NAFEW 2017.

One sentence session summary (<50 words): This is a very short version of
the session description that will appear in the print program.

*Review Criteria*

All proposals will be reviewed by the NAFEW 2017 scientific committee. The
committee may accept, decline, or offer an opportunity to present the
proposed work in a different format particularly if there are few
speakers. Special session organizers will be notified of decision by
December 1, 2016.

Symposium proposals will be assessed using the following criteria:

   - Offer a diverse mix of speakers, each of whom brings new contributions
   to the special session topic
   - Offer significant contributions to understanding of specific issues in
   forest ecology
   - Present innovative or interdisciplinary approaches, including novel
   collaborations or syntheses across subdisciplines
   - Have broad enough appeal to generate large audiences at the meeting

   - Build a well-integrated whole session, more cohesive than other
concurrent sessions (each talk should have clear relevance to an overall
synthesis discussion provided at the end of the special session)
   - Provide strong overall synthesis or overview; they should not be
simply a set of related case studies and avoid the appearance of biases by
taking a narrow perspective on the special session topic

*Please note*, once a special session has been accepted, cancellation
imposes a serious burden to the workshop and deprives others from being
able to present their work. Do not submit a proposal if you are uncertain
that you will be able to fulfill your obligation to organize and conduct
the special session. In addition, the meeting registration is not waived or
reduced for anyone participating in any capacity in a special session. This
includes the session organizer(s), moderator, and speakers. All meeting
attendees must register at the appropriate rate. Organizers are responsible
for making this clear to everyone they recruit to help with the session. No
funds are available for honoraria or to support participant travel.

Important Dates

September 30, 2016

Deadline for submitting a special session proposal

December 1, 2016

Notification of acceptance sent to organizer.

January 31, 2017

Deadline to submit session revisions and confirmed speaker lists along with
list of abstracts for all speakers.
 To Submit

You must submit your proposal (by email) to NAFEW at: nafe...@ualberta.ca

Be sure to include “Special Session Proposal” as your subject heading.

[ECOLOG-L] Biodiversity Faculty Search, 2 positions (Associate, Full, or Assistant in-review for tenure)

2016-06-29 Thread Lichstein,Jeremy
Biodiversity Faculty Search, University of Florida. Two positions at the
Associate or Full Professor level (or Assistant Professors in process for
tenure).

The Department of Biology in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the
University of Florida is seeking applicants for two positions at the Associate
or Full Professor level (or Assistant Professors whose tenure package is
already under review) in the area of Biodiversity, including the generation,
maintenance, dynamics, conservation, structure, or functional consequences of
biodiversity. One position targets researchers who creatively explore
biodiversity science using mathematical, statistical, and/or computational
tools, at scales from single species to entire communities and biogeographical
realms. The other position is more broadly defined, and we welcome candidates
with strong empirical (field, lab, or comparative) and applied research
dimensions in biodiversity science, working in terrestrial, freshwater, marine,
or coastal ecosystems. Successful candidates must have obtained a Ph.D. in
biological sciences, mathematics, statistics, or a related field, and will be
expected to have an internationally recognized research program and contribute
to training and education in biodiversity science.

These hires are part of a new Biodiversity Initiative launched by the
University of Florida, a campus-wide initiative bridging multiple units (and
including the establishment of a Biodiversity Institute), and aiming at
fostering collaborations among scientists, students, resource managers, and
policy analysts, formulating strategies to meet the biodiversity challenges of
the 21st century and beyond. Such strategic questions include gauging the
effects on biodiversity, ecosystem processes, emerging diseases, and resource
sustainability of factors such as climate change, sea level rise, invasive
species, and environmental degradation. The University of Florida is uniquely
positioned to take a leadership role in biodiversity science, capitalizing on
its status as a land grant, sea grant, and space grant university, with the
most comprehensive academic health center in the Southeastern US. The
Biodiversity Initiative will leverage extraordinary data resources and
computing power (including one of the most powerful university supercomputers),
one of the nation's largest natural history museums, and a strong collaborative
culture across disciplines.

Applications must be submitted at
http://explore.jobs.ufl.edu/cw/en-us/job/497559/preeminence-associate-full-professor-in-biodiversity
and must include: (1) a letter summarizing the applicant's qualifications,
ongoing research directions, and interests in the Department, (2) a complete
curriculum vitae, and (3) names and contact information for three references.
Applications will be reviewed beginning August 22, 2016 as received and the
position will remain open until filled. Questions about these positions may be
emailed to Jeremy Lichstein (jlichst...@ufl.edu) with subject "BIODIVERSITY
SEARCH".

The University of Florida counts among its greatest strengths - and a major
component of its excellence - that it values broad diversity in its faculty,
students and staff and creates a robust, inclusive and welcoming climate for
learning, research and other work. UF is committed to equal educational and
employment opportunity and access, and it seeks individuals of all races,
ethnicities, genders and other attributes who, among their many exceptional
qualifications, have a record of including a broad diversity of individuals in
work and learning activities.

The final candidate will be required to provide an official transcript to the
hiring department upon hire. A transcript will not be considered "official" if
a designation of "Issued to Student" is visible. Degrees earned from an
educational institution outside of the United States must be evaluated by a
professional credentialing service provider approved by the National
Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES), which can be found at
http://www.naces.org/.

The University of Florida is an Equal Opportunity Institution.
