[ECOLOG-L] NSF two-step review

2016-08-25 Thread David Inouye
There's an interesting article in the 5 August issue of Science, p.
528-529, about the experiment that NSF's Division of Environmental
Biology has conducted over the past four years, along with the Division
of Integrative and Organismal Systems, requiring pre-proposals before
you can submit a full proposal. A Government Accountability Office
report has singled the new approach out for praise. A table shows that
since 2009 the overall funding rate in IOS has declined from 20% to 8%,
although the success rate of full proposals submitted in the two-step
process in the past four years is 30-35%.

Re: [ECOLOG-L] Research Project Management

2016-08-25 Thread Toby Liss
Greg,

Have you tried Asana? It is a web-based project management tool that is
pretty easy to learn. There are also applications for iPhone and Android.
It has very full functionality for the types of coordination you describe
(assigning tasks to users, setting deadlines, commenting back and forth on
task progress, adding attachments (via Google Drive or Dropbox), and more),
and there is a robust guide available for help. Individuals on your team
would create accounts and join your "Workspace" (for a group of people
working on the same projects and tasks without the same institutional email
addresses). For a large team (>15) you will have to purchase a premium
service, but it's only $8.33 per month and allows unlimited users. I have
used it while running a summer science camp with a co-director and I use it
currently to keep track of almost everything I do as a grad student. I
highly recommend it.

[ECOLOG-L] 3rd International Workshop on Trait-based approaches to Ocean Life (Announcement)

2016-08-25 Thread Chris Lindemann
3rd International Workshop on Trait-based approaches to Ocean Life
20th - 23rd of August 2017
Solstrand near Bergen, Norway
hosted by the Hjort Centre for Marine Ecosystem Dynamics

"The trait-based approach to ocean life is emerging as a novel framework for
understanding the complexity, structure, and dynamics of marine ecosystems,
but also their broader significance. Rather than considering species
individually, organisms are characterized by essential traits that capture
key aspects of diversity. Trait distributions in the ocean emerge through
evolution and natural selection, and are mediated by the environment,
biological interactions, anthropogenic drivers, and organism behavior.
Because trait variations within and across communities lead to variation in
the rates of crucial ecosystem functions such as carbon export, this
mechanistic approach sheds light on how variability in the environment,
including climate change, impacts marine ecosystems, biogeochemical cycles,
and associated feedbacks to climate and society

Carbon and Biogeochemistry Program, DOI: 10.1575/1912/8017)."

PhD Assistantship in Ecosystem Restoration &
Functional/Community Ecology

first posted: 5 August 2016

A Ph.D. assistantship beginning January 2017
is available in the lab of Nick Barber at Northern
Illinois University (http://niu.edu/biology/about/
faculty/barber/Barber_Lab/ Home.html) as part
of the NSF-funded Restoring Function in Grassland
Ecosystems (ReFuGE) project in collaboration with
Holly Jones (http://niu.edu/biology/about/faculty/
jones/jones_lab/index.html). This project seeks
to understand how ecosystem restoration and
management shapes consumer communities and how
this influences ecosystem function.

We seek a Ph.D. student to investigate the
effects of tallgrass prairie restoration and
management (prescribed fire, bison grazing,
and predator exclusion) on insect community
assembly and plant-insect interactions.
Experience with arthropod identification,
quantification of functional traits, or stable
isotope analysis are desirable. Applicants
should have a B.S. in ecology, environmental
science, wildlife science, entomology, natural
resource conservation, or closely related
discipline, with at least one peer-reviewed
publication or an M.S. degree; a M.S. is preferred.
Preference will be given to candidates who have
past experience leading their own research project,
with strong basic ecology backgrounds, and those
that have experience working in inclement
conditions. The assistantship includes two years
of support (tuition, stipend, and research funds)
after which the student will be supported by a
departmental teaching assistantship.

Northern Illinois University is a 20,000-student
research university located in DeKalb, IL, a
diverse community with a low cost of living west
of the Chicago suburbs. The Department of Biological
Sciences at NIU is a highly collaborative department
with a supportive graduate program and ideal
