Sex in Dragons -- Ecological drivers of transitions between GSD and TSD
Posted in Pogona Research on May 09, 2017

The Institute for Applied Ecology is seeking two PhD students with interests in
population genetics
and reptile ecology/physiology to investigate the field-based mechanisms of sex
reversal in the
dragon lizard, Pogona vitticeps.

Project Description

Reptiles exhibit an astonishing diversity in the means by which sex is
determined early in
development, genetic systems with male or female heterogamety, systems where
temperature
determines sex, and systems where environment and genotype interact to
determine sex. The dragon
lizard has female heterogamety, as in birds, yet temperature can over-ride this
system to determine
sex. This system is ideal for examining the interaction of genetic and
environmental influences on
sexual phenotype under natural conditions.

The projects are supported by an ARC Discovery Grant awarded to Team Pogona led
by Professor
Arthur Georges, but involving a broad team spanning a number of leading
researchers and
institutions. The successful candidates will be based in Canberra.

The first PhD candidate will seek to determine (a) how the frequency of sex
reversal varies
geographically; (b) if that variation correlates with micro-climate; (c)
whether transitions between
GSD and TSD occur in nature following the recent discovery that sex reversal
occurs in nature; (d) if
there is evidence of retention of cryptic sex chromosomes in populations where
temperature is the
primary driver of sex; and (e) at what scale does genetic variation structure
across the landscape.
This project will require significant time in the field collection collecting
tissue samples throughout
the range of Pogona vitticeps. The successful candidate will work closely with
supervisors Prof.
Stephen Sarre, Dr Clare Holleley and Arthur Georges.

The second PhD candidate will focus on thermal biology of adults and nests,
differential behavior of
sex reversed females, normal females and males, differential fecundity,
movements and home range
using radio-telemetry. There will also be an opportunity to study the role of
water balance in
governing movement patterns and periods of inactivity. Demonstrating sex
reversal in natural nests,
and obtaining estimates of the relative fitness of normal and sex reversed
females in the wild will be
target outcomes, to complement definitive results already established in the
laboratory. This project
will require extended periods based in western Queensland at a field site near
Eulo, where sex
reversal has been detected. The successful candidate will work closely with
supervisors Profs
Stephen Sarre, Brian Green and Arthur Georges

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate for the first PhD opportunity will possess experience in
population
genetics/genomics and spatial population modelling. Knowledge of NGS approaches
and analyses is
desirable, and past work using the abovementioned techniques and an interest in
sex determination
would be valuable.

The ideal candidate for the second PhD opportunity will possess substantial
experience in field
based research including radio-telemetry, preferably on reptiles, and a good
knowledge of
physiological ecology.

Both candidates will be expected to be self-motivated and well-organized, with
the capacity to work
in remote locations (including a driver’s licence) and the broad skill set
necessary for the successful
completion of a research project. They will be collegial and able to work
alongside a wide variety of
people in the field and in multi-function teams. They will have a strong
commitment to excellence in
research and scholarship.

Stipend

Financial support for domestic and international students is expected to be
available for a high
achieving student through the mid-year scholarship round at the University of
Canberra. These
scholarships are highly competitive. To be competitive, candidates should have
a first class honours
degree or equivalent in a relevant area and other evidence of research
potential (such as
publication).

Eligibility

The University of Canberra scholarships are open to all nationalities. However,
overseas candidates
for whom English is not a first language must secure an IELTS score of 6.5 and
have no individual
score falling below 6.0 to satisfy our English language requirements.

How to Apply

Interested applicants are encouraged to make informal enquiries to Professor
Stephen Sarre. Please
send your curriculum vitae, a sample of your written scientific work, and the
names of two referees
with a covering letter to:

Professor Stephen Sarre [stephen.sa...@canberra.edu.au]

[ECOLOG-L] Earth Stewardship Initiative Demonstration Project Fellowships at ESA 2017

2017-05-12 Thread Yishen Li
Hello Everyone,
Are you interested in green infrastructure, watershed management,
urban land use, and translating science to solutions? At the upcoming
Ecological Society of America (ESA) 2017 meeting in Portland, Oregon
this August, the Earth Stewardship Initiative (ESI) Demonstration
Project is organizing a “learning from the city” program. Working in
conjunction with the City of Portland Bureau of Environmental Services
(BES), we will evaluate Portland’s green infrastructure (GI) design and
implementation practices and propose design research and monitoring
strategies to inform their process. We will do so through a field trip,
targeted workshop, and writing session during the ESA. We now invite
applications for as many as 30 ESI Student Fellows to participate in
this exciting project.
Since 2014, ESI has collaborated twice with representatives from
the cities where the ESA conferences were held and brought together
multiple local organizations and academic institutions.
(https://www.earthstewardshipinitiative.com/) ESI solicits fellows from
around the country to work with city officials, practitioners, and ESA
organizers on large-scale land planning projects. Participants
collaborate on an urban design process to generate sustainable design
strategies, and propose ways of improving research methods for these
projects through designed experiments and other adaptive management
tools. ESA 2017 offers unique opportunities to evaluate current GI
design for the City of Portland and to develop designed experiments with
a team of senior ecologists, ecology students, and city managers.
Portland is a national leader in implementing green infrastructure, and
has established a city-wide green network drawing on considerable
experience with GI design, implementation, monitoring, maintenance, and
community engagement.
Prior to the meeting, selected ESI Fellows will review
synthesized materials from Portland and participate in a conference call
with ESI advisors and the City. At the ESA meeting, fellows will attend
an organized field trip on August 8 to Portland GI sites with BES
officials, and discuss how research can be integrated into the design of
these built environments to assess their ecological value and add
ecological function. During a subsequent workshop organized on August
10, fellow will collaborate with senior ESA research scientists,
landscape designers, and city managers to develop strategies around the
design, engineering, and maintenance of local GI for future integration
of ecological research. Workshop participants will engage in a
collaborative brainstorming session to develop strategies for
integrating experimental research into GI projects. Following the
workshop, fellows will hold a writing sessions to synthesize materials
from the field trip and workshop and make recommendations for
integrating monitoring and research through designed experiments and
other adaptive management tools for GI in Portland. After the meeting
fellows will use this synthesis work to complete a white paper on
Portland’s GI implementation, leading to potential scientific
publications. Fellows will also benefit from opportunities to network
with ESA scientists and City of Portland BES officials.
ESI fellows are expected to: 1) register for and attend ESA 2017
for both the field trip and workshop, 2) review materials and attend the
conference call and planning session, 3) attend the workshop, field
trip, and writing session during the ESA in Portland, and 4) dedicate
several days of remote work following the conference to edit and
complete the white paper. Funding will be available for outstanding
fellows to cover conference and transportation costs. To apply, please
send a one-page statement of interest and resume/short CV as a single

[ECOLOG-L] Two paid behavioral ecology field assistant positions - June-July 2017

2017-05-12 Thread James Loving-Lichtenstein

Hello! My name is James Lichtenstein, and I'm a graduate student at the
University of California Santa Barbara, in the Pruitt lab. I'm excited to offer
this research opportunity! It should provide invaluable experience in executing
experiments on animal behavior and ecology in general.

Description:

We are hiring two paid field assistants to help us perform lab/field insect
behavioral ecology work in western Pennsylvania. We will be probing the
ecological consequences of personality in mantids and other insects. Therefore,
the job will largely consist of: 1) capturing insects via sweep net, 2)
painting/performing behavioral tests on insects, and 3) setting up mesocosm
trials. You will be expected to be up early to assist with projects and assist
with data entry in the evenings. Expect long, 10+ hour workdays. The job starts
around late May or early June and goes until early August at your convenience.

We will be working with these mantises around Linesville, Pennsylvania.
Although this is a sleepy small town, we'll have access to hiking, canoes, etc.
There won't a ton of time for exploring this kind of recreation, but not no
time.

Compensation:

Your housing and dining costs will be covered. We will be staying at either a
field station or a rented house in the area. Although we'll be preparing our
own meals, you will not be expected to cook. There will be access to wifi, but
it may be quite slow. We can cover travel costs within the continental united
states, but preference will be given to students from Pennsylvania and Ohio. If
you do well, I am happy to write letters of recommendation, and we
traditionally include assistants as authors on all publication. Finally, we
will pay each assistant $500 dollars per month.

Requirements and considerations:

1. Seriously interested in pursuing a career in ecology
2. Excellent academic performance
3. Undergraduate or recent graduate
4. Must be able to stay for the entire 2 month duration
5. Experience with insects or behavioral testing is preferred, but not required
6. Must not be squeamish working with insects. We will capture and thousands of
them.
7. If you have pollen allergies, this project may be an ordeal for you. Sweep
netting insects boils down to meandering through a field and hitting plants
with a stick. This results in intense pollen exposure. We can provide masks to
reduce this exposure.

I am sorry for the short notice of this offer, so we will be making a decision
very quickly. If you wish to apply, please send a short cover letter, your CV,
and some sort of unofficial transcript to mantispersonal...@gmail.com. Finally,
if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask!
