[ECOLOG-L] PhD Assistantship – Post-wildfire response of restored western white pine forests in northern Idaho

2017-08-24 Thread Andrew Nelson
Dr. Andrew Nelson’s Silviculture Lab at the University of Idaho (housed
within the Department of Forest, Rangeland, and Fire Sciences) is
seeking a highly motivated candidate for graduate research at the Ph.D.
level, with an interest in silviculture and/or forest restoration. The
student will work on a project comparing resistance, resilience, and
environmental conditions of restored western white pine forests and
naturally-regenerated forests dominated by shade-tolerant species in
northern Idaho burned by the 2015 wildfires. The Northern Rockies of
Idaho are characterized by high conifer diversity due to relatively high
precipitation and deep volcanic ash deposits. Western white pine once
dominated northern Idaho forests, but the species was devastated
following the introduction of white pine blister rust and extensive
harvesting. The result was a dramatic shift in species composition from
western white pine to forests dominated by primarily grand fir. This
shift in specie composition has decreased species diversity and
structural heterogeneity. National Forests in the region have over
50,000 acres of western white pine plantations; some of which burned in
the 2015 wildfires. Currently, a partnership with the University of
Idaho, Rocky Mountain Research Station, and Forest Service, Northern
Region are identifying the fate and fire resilience of these burned
plantations. The student is expected to begin 7 January 2018.

The student will be based in Moscow, Idaho at the University of Idaho.
The student will focus the research within the moist conifer forests of
northern Idaho; research options including applying past and new data
(collect summer of 2018) to address a variety of research questions
associated with evaluating management options that could inform future
restoration strategies.

This assistantship includes two years of competitive stipend, a waiver
of out-of-state tuition for non-Idaho residents, a waiver of in-state
tuition and fees, and health insurance. Assistantships require 20 hours
per week of work related to research, outreach, and teaching. The
student is expected to travel to conferences to present research
results, present results to forest managers, and publish results in
peer-reviewed journals. Frequent communication with Forest Service
partners is required.

Required qualifications include a M.S. degree in Forestry, Forest
Ecology, or a related discipline. Exceptional candidates with B.S.
degrees in the same fields may be considered. The successful candidate
will demonstrate an ability to work both independently and as a team
member, and be comfortable traveling and working in the field.
Applicants must have a valid U.S. driver’s license. The student must be
able to pass a criminal background check and become qualified to drive
University of Idaho vehicles. Additional qualifications include previous
research experience and an interest in working with government agencies
and forest landowners to improve forest management.

Interested applicants should send a cover letter detailing their
interest in the position, their resume or curriculum vitae, contact
information for three professional or academic references, unofficial
transcripts, scores on the Graduate Record Exam, and examples of past
research publications (if available) in a single pdf file to Dr. Andrew
Nelson (asnel...@uidaho.edu).

Quotes from last year’s students

- The instructors provided first hand, useful information regarding care of
salamanders from all families, with practical tips on husbandry and diet. The
veterinary discussion was extremely helpful. The field trip was fantastic. I
had the opportunity to learn from everyone instructing and taking the course.

- This is a one of a kind course. I found it completely enriching in both a
professional and personal context. The relationships and knowledge cultivated
during the course are priceless and will be indispensable to me in regard to
future salamander conservation work.

- With the amphibian decline crisis in full swing, this course serves as an
opportunity to learn in depth information about salamander research and

[ECOLOG-L] MS Marine Science and Oceanography - Spring 2018 applications open

2017-08-24 Thread Peter McCarthy
Florida Atlantic University has established a new degree program which leads to
an MS in Marine Science and Oceanography. The primary educational objective of
this program is to provide graduate students with a broad understanding of
coastal, nearshore and oceanographic science, along with the research and
inquiry skills necessary to independently conduct research and answer questions
within their area of specialization. They will be well situated to enter the
workforce ready to apply their skills to research, management and
administrative questions related to coastal and oceanographic issues in higher
education, government, private sector consulting positions and non-profit
organizations.

We are currently accepting applications for Spring 2018 admission, deadline
October 15th, 2017.

This is an interdisciplinary program jointly administered by the Charles E.
Schmidt College of Science and Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute.
Participating faculty have appointments at HBOI and the College of Science.
Areas of concentration include Marine Biology, Coastal and Geological Science,
Conservation and Ecology, Remote Sensing and GIS, Chemistry, and Statistics and
Communication.

By incorporating the HBOI research faculty into this new degree program, we are
providing an academic program of the highest quality. HBOI has already
demonstrated its ability to deliver world-class research, and they have engaged
with Florida's communities and businesses in meaningful and measurable ways.
The HBOI faculty now turn their attention to delivering graduate curriculum to
students who will have an unprecedented opportunity to work directly with
world-class researchers, both at HBOI and throughout FAU, in their labs and in
the field.

[ECOLOG-L] OSM session: Marine ecosystem forecasting for decision-making (Abstracts due Sept. 6)

2017-08-24 Thread Katherine Mills
Dear colleagues,

We invite you to present your work at the following session at the
2018 Ocean Sciences Meeting, 11-16 February 2018 in Portland, Oregon:

Session Title: Marine Ecosystem Forecasting for Decision-Making
Session ID: 28503

Much like weather forecasting, ocean ecosystem forecasting has
potential benefit to society in many ways. Forecasts can provide
managers, stakeholders, fishers, residents, and public health
officials with prognostic information relevant to decisions they are
facing. Thanks to advances in modeling, monitoring, and theory, there
are a number of ocean ecosystem forecasts that are operational or in
development on time scales ranging from daily to seasonal, with
practical implications for industry operations, recreation and
tourism, and human health and well being. Predictions at the decadal
scale or longer can provide strategic advice to marine dependent
industries and coastal communities. Most scientists focus on the
technical barriers that must be overcome to provide reliable
predictions of complex, interconnected systems. However, forecasts
are meant to be used by people, and considerable challenges exist with
understanding how forecast information is digested, interpreted, and
used. This session will showcase a range of existing and experimental
ocean ecosystem forecasts, discuss the challenges and successes of
forecasting, and continue to build a community of forecasters as
ecosystem forecasting grows into its own branch of oceanographic
research.

Abstract submissions will close on 6 September, 2017.
