[ECOLOG-L] Survey on Collaborative Research and Practice

2018-06-20 Thread Steger,Cara
Dear colleagues -

The Mountain Sentinels collaborative network
(mountainsentinels.org) is working to understand
the most important activities and the most significant barriers to success
common across collaborative research projects relating to environmental issues.
We developed a survey to gather insights from both researchers and
practitioners with collaborative experience across all systems (not just
mountains).

We are offering the survey in four languages (English, Spanish, Chinese and
French). We estimate that it will take approximately 20 - 25 minutes to take
the survey. We invite you to take this survey and greatly appreciate your time
and assistance.

Please use the link below to submit your responses:

http://colostate.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_0uISMqvYfFusI9D

Additionally, we would be very grateful if you could forward this survey to any
of your respective networks and collaborators.

Note that participation is entirely voluntary and responses will remain
confidential. Julia Klein
(julia.kl...@colostate.edu) or Cara Steger
(cara.ste...@gmail.com) would be happy to answer
any questions you have regarding the project.

Thanks for helping us to share this survey widely.

Sincerely,

Julia and Cara

[ECOLOG-L] 4 seats left in "Intro to Wildlife Camera Trapping" workshop, July 6-9

2018-06-20 Thread John Perrine
We have 4 seats left in our upcoming “Introduction to Wildlife Camera
Trapping” workshop, which will be held July 6-9, 2018 in Lassen Volcanic
National Park in northern California, USA.

Motion-triggered cameras (also called “camera traps”) have become an
invaluable tool for wildlife research and management. This workshop
provides a comprehensive introduction to camera trapping equipment and
methodology, so that participants with little to no experience with camera
trapping can acquire the basic knowledge to plan, outfit, and carry out
their own projects.

Workshop topics include:
- evaluating features when purchasing wildlife camera traps
- practical research objectives: what can you really expect to learn from
your project?
- to bait or not to bait
- photos or video? tradeoffs
- workflows and data management
- other essential gear beside the camera trap itself
- examples of using camera traps for a variety of research objectives
and more!

In addition, each participant will receive hands-on experience setting up
and checking several models of commercially-available camera traps.
Participants are also encouraged to bring their own camera traps if they
have them.

The course is limited to 16 participants to ensure plenty of hands-on
opportunity for everyone.

The instructors are John Perrine (Professor of Biology, California
Polytechnic State University, California) and Katie Moriarty (Postdoctoral
Research Biologist, US Forest Service). Together, they have over 30 years
of wildlife camera trapping experience.

Registration fees are as follows (includes camping fees and meals):
members of Western Section of The Wildlife Society: $495
  non-members: $540
college students / new professionals: $270

[ECOLOG-L] AGU 2018 session: Global Vegetation and Land Surface Dynamics in a Changing Climate

Changing Climate
Section/Focus Group: Global Environmental Change
View Session Details:
https://agu.confex.com/agu/fm18/prelim.cgi/Session/49837

Session Description:
Changes in vegetation biomass have multiple drivers, including natural
ecosystem variability, climate changes, and anthropogenic activities.
Historically, clearing of native ecosystems for agriculture has
dominated these vegetation transitions, but there is growing evidence of
ecosystem change in response to shifting rainfall and climate regimes,
seasonality, and even CO2 fertilization effects. Future climate changes
and intensifying land management will bring additional, interactive
changes to natural and managed ecosystems. Managing these systems
requires understanding the multiscale drivers of these vegetation
dynamics, the mechanisms by which they operate, and how they change over
time. This session invites submissions from diverse perspectives,
including observed, empirical, and process-based modeling approaches.
Talks will examine vegetation trends and identify the critical scales,
mechanisms, and feedbacks driving vegetation and land surface dynamics
in a changing climate. We will emphasize emerging trends, vegetation
responses to ecosystem change, and outstanding uncertainties to direct
future data collection efforts and model development.

[ECOLOG-L] MS Graduate Assistantship in Grassland and Orthoptera Ecology

2018-06-20 Thread Reichenborn, Molly
Posted on behalf of Dr. Mary Liz Jameson, Wichita State University
(maryliz.jame...@gmail.com). Please direct any questions or applications for
this position to her.

MS Graduate Assistantship in Grassland and Orthoptera Ecology

We are seeking a highly motivated individual with interest in Orthoptera
ecology and identification. The successful candidate will assist in research
across the state of Kansas comparing Orthoptera on grazed and ungrazed
grasslands in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP). In Kansas, the CRP
program currently has over 2 million acres—much of which is re-established,
native grassland. However, there is currently no dominant grazer on most of
these sites despite the critical role that bison historically played in these
systems. Our study will test how two CRP plantings (CP2 and CP25), which differ
in the number of forbs planted, influence the restoration of 108 grassland
sites across the precipitation gradient in Kansas and whether periodic grazing
by cattle can enhance habitat diversity for insects, plants, and birds.

The ideal person for this position is self-motivated, works well with a team of
field researchers, has a basic understanding of statistics, has knowledge of
grassland ecosystems, and has a strong interest in ecology and entomology.
However, students with the aptitude to learn quickly will also be considered.
The successful applicant will have a strong commitment to entomology and
ecology and desire to learn a range of tools/techniques/methods. Proficiency in
oral and written English required. Applicants should have a B.S. in entomology,
ecology, or biology and must meet the requirements for admission at Wichita
State University (http://webs.wichita.edu/?u=bioscience=/academics/mdindex/).
Successful applicants will receive a 2.5-year assistantship with stipend, full
tuition waiver, and health benefits. In the first semester, the successful
applicant will be employed as a technician while she/he learns the research
system and begins data-collection/sorting for the 2018 field season.
Anticipated start date is late July to mid-August of 2018.

Deadline for applications is July 23, but early applications are encouraged.
Interested applicants should email CV, transcript, and a letter describing
research interests and future goals to Dr. Mary Liz Jameson
(maryliz.jame...@gmail.com).

Wichita State University is a metropolitan research-intensive university set in
a suburban area (~640,000 people) with a diverse student body, yet close to
