[ECOLOG-L] Postdoctoral and Masters graduate student positions in phytoplankton and sensors

2017-07-07 Thread David White
"SENSE" is a research program funded by NSF that builds on previous
cyberinfrastructure to address water quality issues shared between Kentucky
and West Virginia. The overarching goal is to utilize advanced aquatic
sensor systems and apply resulting data to emerging environmental problems.
We are working toward a greater understanding and optimizing the
food-energy-water nexus (INFEWs) with specific emphasis on nutrient loads
and warm water interacting to influence algal communities, including harmful
algal blooms (CyanoHABs). New infrastructure focuses on the latest
generation of sensors to measure real-time or near real-time water quality
parameters including phosphorus, nitrogen, and algal metrics. Our emphasis
is on Kentucky Lake where we have a long-term (28 years) monitoring program
that includes all the major nutrients, zooplankton, and algae. . Real-
monitoring (15 min interval) has occurred since 2005. The positions are
located at Murray State University's Hancock Biological Station (HBS) on
Kentucky Lake, about 15 miles from the main campus. HBS has a fulltime
staff of 6 including a database manager, water chemist, field tech and other
support staff. More about HBS is on our website: www.murraystate.edu/hbs.

The project is funded for 4 years. Positions are now immediately available
for both a Postdoctoral Research Associate and a Masters graduate student.
There will be opportunities for both the Postdoc and MS student to develop
their own research within the scope of the grant. Funds are available to
present at national meetings and cover publication costs. The Postdoctoral
position includes a wide range of fringe benefits. The MS position includes
a stipend and tuition and most fees. The MS candidate will have the option
of residing at HBS.

The Postdoc should have a background in phycology, particularly
phytoplankton. Experience with water quality sensors is a plus and well as
is experience with large data sets. The MS candidate should have an
undergraduate degree with emphasis in environmental biology or computer
science.

[ECOLOG-L] M.S. assistantships in environmental IT and remote sensors

2010-04-06 Thread DAVID WHITE
Murray State University's Hancock Biological Station is looking MS
graduate students interested in gaining experience within the rapidly
expanding field of environmental IT and remote sensors. Students
would be working with environmental monitoring databases to create a
robust reporting services collection as well as working within
analysis services. Students would visit sites located on Kentucky
Lake and surrounding streams to learn equipment maintenance and
troubleshooting. Additional potential exists for hands-on experience
with high performance computing, supercomputing, and environmental
sensor design and manufacturing. Experience with SQL Server and the
ability to integrate into a team environment are required.
Familiarity with SQL Server Analysis Server and SQL Server Reporting
Services is preferred but not required if the student makes a
commitment to become familiar with these
technologies. Assistantships are available as well as housing at the

[ECOLOG-L] MS graduate student opportunities in aquatic ecology/limnology

2009-12-03 Thread David White
We are looking for two MS students interested in aquatic ecology or
limnology through our Water Science Masters program. Both are paid
research assistantships and would be through Murray State
University's Hancock Biological Station on Kentucky Lake. Students
would have the option of residing at the Biological Station, about 15
miles from the main campus.

Both students would assist with deployment of lake environmental
sensors and bi-weekly monitoring cruises through an NSF-funded
cyberinfrastructure grant. Specific thesis research areas would be
based on each student's interests and the Station's ongoing research
programs. These might include but are not limited to analysis of
sensor data, zooplankton ecology and invasive species, lake algae,
zebra mussels and native mussel species, the effects of water level
fluctuations, and lake benthos dynamics. In the later case, the
benthos of Kentucky Lake is quickly disappearing but the reasons for
it remain unclear.
