[ECOLOG-L] Graduate research assistantship, Microbial ecology (NC State)

2016-10-24 Thread Holly Menninger
Graduate Research Assistantship (M.S. or Ph.D) -- Dept of Applied Ecology,
NC State Univ
Microbial ecology of caviar and fish eggs

A research assistantship is available to support an exceptional,
highly-motivated student who has an inquiring mind and is in pursuit of a
M.S. degree or Ph.D. in Zoology, Functional Genomics, or any other relevant
graduate research degree program. The successful candidate will work in a
molecular biology research laboratory and may conduct field studies on fish
reproduction and spawning. The project is an exciting one that bridges food
science, basic ecology, and fisheries science. The research focus goal is,
in part, to understand the microbial communities that live in preserved
sturgeon roes (caviars) and also, more generally, to understand the
microbes that live on fishes and how they might be transferred to the eggs
once they are laid. The successful candidate will spearhead laboratory
research experiments including metagenomics, microbial culture, and fish
rearing in recirculating aquaculture systems and work among a large group
of scientists interested in topics as diverse as beer ecology, deep
learning algorithms, ant nest microbiomes, and the biodiversity of belly
buttons.

The position could start as soon as January or August 2017. This is a
two-year position for M.S. students with a possible one-year extension
depending on funding and performance. The time frame will be longer for
Ph.D. students and will allow for adequate time to complete the degree
requirements.

Questions should be directed to Dr. Benjamin Reading(bjrea...@unity.ncsu.edu

[ECOLOG-L] Sign up for Science Communication Workshop at ESA Annual Meeting

2014-06-10 Thread Holly Menninger
Hi all,

Inspired by the rallying call at last year’s Annual Meeting
http://www.esa.org/esablog/ecology-and-society/whats-the-future-of-ecologist-communicators/
to better connect our science to society, we’ve organized a hands-on
workshop http://eco.confex.com/eco/2014/webprogram/Session9813.html for
attendees of this year’s Annual Meeting: Workshop 15:
http://eco.confex.com/eco/2014/webprogram/Session9813.html*Beyond the
written word – advancing ecology communication through multimedia*
http://eco.confex.com/eco/2014/webprogram/Session9813.html.

As we look towards ESA’s Centennial
https://esa.org/history/esa-2015-centennial/, we want to move the
conversation forward from talking about *why* communicating our science is
important to improving *how* we actually do it.

During the five-hour workshop on Sunday, August 10
http://eco.confex.com/eco/2014/webprogram/Session9813.html, you’ll get a
crash course in scientific storytelling using audio, video, text,
photography, and illustration from a talented team of
ecologist-communicators. We will first orient you to our favorite tools,
software and apps – most of which you already carry around in your pocket
or could download for free. Then, we’ll lead you through hands-on exercises
to gain confidence and expertise in each media.
Here’s the most exciting part of the workshop: you’ll form a small team
with workshop presenters and other participants to plan and produce a
multimedia project covering some aspect of the science at the meeting.
We’ll even provide a platform for you to share these multimedia pieces with
the world: a special series published on the *EcoTone* blog
http://www.esa.org/esablog/.

Learn more about the workshop in our recent EcoTone post:
http://www.esa.org/esablog/meetings/from-oceans-to-mountains-its-all-about-ecology-communication/

Hope to see you there!

[ECOLOG-L] PhD Assistantship - Tropical avian ecology and conservation decision-making

2014-02-19 Thread Holly Menninger
I'm just the messenger here -- please direct all inquiries to Dr. Krishna
Pacifici (jkpac...@ncsu.edu)

*PhD Assistantship - Tropical avian ecology and conservation
decision-making: exploring the influences of landscape level disturbances
on species distributions.*

We are recruiting a PhD student in the fall of 2014 to work on a unique
project focused on understanding geographic variation in avian population
dynamics as a function of landscape level environmental stressors (e.g.,
land-use, climate) in order to inform conservation decisions. The student
would join the Collazo and Pacifici research lab and would collaborate with
an interdisciplinary team of ecologists (Collazo and Pacifici) and
statisticians (Brian Reich and Eric Laber, NCSU) to develop and apply
Bayesian hierarchical population and community level models to inform a
conservation design project in Puerto Rico.

The centerpiece of this project is a habitat conservation strategy that
ensures the long-term persistence of resident avifauna. The final outcome
will be a decision model that will identify spatially-explicit actions to
increase the amount of protected land from the actual 8% to 15% in the
island.

The student will be housed in the Department of Applied Ecology at North
Carolina State University (http://projects.cals.ncsu.edu/appliedecology/). The
ideal candidate will have a strong interest in avian ecology, birding
skills, but also a strong background in quantitative ecology and population
demography. Applicants with previous experience in the following areas will
be given priority: estimating demographic parameters (e.g.,
mark-recapture), presence/absence (e.g., occupancy), Bayesian hierarchical
modeling, stochastic optimization and decision-making for natural resource
management (i.e., Adaptive management), managing large databases, and
programming skills (preferably R, BUGS/JAGS, and GIS). An M.S. degree in
Ecology, Wildlife Biology, Statistics, or other similar fields is preferred.

Interested applicants should send a cover letter including a description of
their research interests, CV including GRE scores and GPA, and names and
contact information for 3 references to Drs. Jaime A. Collazo (
jcoll...@ncsu.edu) and Krishna Pacifici (jkpac...@ncsu.edu), or at 225
David Clark Labs, Department of Applied Ecology, North Carolina State
University, Raleigh, NC 27695-7617. Applications should be submitted by May
1, 2014 at the latest. We will review applications as they arrive.

[ECOLOG-L] 2 Postdoc Positions, Dunn Lab (NCSU) - Ecology and evolution of ants in cities, Ecology of species in our daily lives

2012-04-17 Thread Holly Menninger
Post doc on ecology and evolution of ants in our cities, backyards and
houses: https://jobs.ncsu.edu/postings/6697

One postdoctoral position will be available to work in the lab of Rob Dunn
in the Department of Biology at North Carolina State University, in
potential collaboration with other faculty (depending on the chosen
candidate’s interests). Funding will be for work that considers the ecology
and evolution of ants. Ongoing work in the lab includes research on
crickets, ants, beetles, fungi, bacteria and other taxa using large-scale
experiments, genetics, genomics, citizen science, modeling approaches and
natural history observations. Work in the lab also includes science writing
and public outreach.

The candidate would work, in part, on the School of Ants
(www.schoolofants.org) project (co-led by Dunn and by Dr. Andrea Lucky at
the University of Florida). Preferred projects will be those that take
advantage of the data and specimens being compiled at thousands of sites in
North America and Europe as part of the School of Ants project and/or work
in an array of experimental, open-top warming chambers in the Duke and
Harvard Forests.

Both the lab and the department are actively growing and so there are many
opportunities for ambitious projects. Projects could focus on individual
taxa or community level questions, or focus on issues related to the
interaction of ants and other species such as their symbionts and pathogens.
Scope exists for projects to include genomics, genetics, experiments,
natural history and science writing for the public. The most successful
projects will be those that help us to understand the species we see
everyday but about which we know relatively little, whether those species
live in Raleigh, Manhattan or somewhere else in the world.

A short cover letter (with a very brief description of research interests
and experience) and a separate proposal (600 words) should both be included
with the application. The candidate’s statement and letters should
emphasize the candidate’s ability to finish projects and the unique skills
the candidate might bring to the lab (www.robdunnlab.com).

FTE: 1.0

Length of appointment: Application process has opened (See:
https://jobs.ncsu.edu/postings/6697). Applications will be accepted until a
suitable candidate is found with an ideal start date in June/July 2012.
Position appointment will last for one year from starting date, with
possibility of renewal for additional years based on performance and funding.

Salary: $36,000

Minimum Experience Education: Ph.D. (awarded by start date) in ecology,
evolution, biology, entomology, microbiology, or related fields at the time
of employment. The applicant’s CV should indicate evidence of strong
scholarship, including peer-reviewed publications in high-ranked journals
and/or science writing for the public in high profile magazines and newspapers.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training:
Expertise in ecology and evolution and in addressing questions in a clear
hypothesis-testing framework is desired. A background in genetics, history
or literature is also of potential value, depending on the direction of the
project. The applicant’s CV should indicate evidence of strong scholarship,
including peer-reviewed publications in high ranked journals and/or science
writing for the public in high profile magazines and newspapers. The
successful candidate must be able to interact with a diverse group of
researchers and students and benefit from new and established intra- and
inter-institution collaborations. The candidate should show strong evidence
of the ability to finish projects.

Departmental Required Skills:
A valid driver’s license is required. NC Driver's license required within
60 days of hire.

Application Procedure: This job has formally posted at the NCSU website
https://jobs.ncsu.edu/postings/6697. Please submit a CV, cover letter,
project proposal, names and email addresses of three references.

Also, as mentioned in earlier ECOLOG post, we have another post doc position
available on ecology and evolution of species in our daily lives:
https://jobs.ncsu.edu/postings/6595

Working Title: Post doc on the ecology and evolution of the species that
live in us, on us and around us in our everyday lives.

North Carolina State University

In potential collaboration with: Michelle Trautwein (Nature Research
Center), Meg Lowman (Nature Research Center), Julie Horvath (Nature Research
Center), Nick Haddad (Department of Biology), Nadia Singh (Department of
Genetics), Brian Wiegmann (Department of Entomology), Steve Frank
(Department of Entomology), Holly Menninger (Department of Biology) or
others, including Noah Fierer (University of Colorado).

Essential Job Duties: One postdoctoral position will be available to work in
the lab of Rob Dunn in the Department of Biology at North Carolina State
University, in potential collaboration with other faculty (depending on the

in our daily lives. Ongoing work in the lab considers crickets, ants, fungi,
bacteria and other taxa using large-scale experiments, genetics, genomics,
citizen science and natural history observations. The successful candidate
could build on existing approaches and taxa by, for example, taking
advantage of our network of citizen scientists (http://yourwildlife.org) or
our experimental warming arrays, but perhaps also by considering other
species around us from new perspectives.

Both the lab and the department are actively growing and so there are ample
opportunities for ambitious projects. Projects could focus on individual
taxa (as we are doing with a camel cricket species) or might consider the
communities of species in houses around the world as a function of human
