[ECOLOG-L] RFP: Call for Working Group Proposals NCEAS - SNAP

2013-07-16 Thread LeeAnne French
SNAP: Science for Nature and People (http://snap.is) is a new scientific
collaboration launched by the National Center for Ecological Analysis and
Synthesis (NCEAS), The Nature Conservancy (TNC), and the Wildlife
Conservation Society (WCS). This collaborative is assembled to ask the
question: How can protecting nature help ensure food, energy, water and
security for 9 billion or more people? We intend to uncover approaches that
will benefit all humankind—especially the planet’s poorest and most
marginalized citizens.

SNAP is requesting proposal for Working Groups that will be initiated before
the end of 2013. Proposals may require new modeling, and in rare cases
funding may be provided to collect some original data that fill gaps in an
otherwise relatively complete picture. Projects must have the potential to
generate clear outcomes for improving human well-being and nature
conservation, and should examine a geographic scale that may produce
generalizable conclusions and/or replicable solutions.

SNAP is a boundary institution - at the boundary between analysis and
action. We seek proposals for Working Groups that help answer two
overarching questions:
1. How can conservation actions benefit a critical mass of people today
while addressing long-term ecological sustainability?
2. How can economic development be achieved without irreversible or severe
environmental damage?

Working Groups should include expertise from both inside and outside of
academia. A key component of successful proposals is the integral
involvement of staff from TNC, WCS, or both, as members of Working Group.

The full SNAP Request For Proposals (http://nceas.ucsb.edu/snap/rfp) packet
contains: who should apply, guidelines for submission, financial
information, a description of Working Groups, and details about the proposal
review process. SNAP Working Groups Proposals for must be submitted by 9
September 2013. Decisions will be announced in early October. Inquiries

[ECOLOG-L] NEW FUNDING OPPORTUNITY: Science for Nature and People Partnership

2016-03-03 Thread LeeAnne French

SNAPP 2016 Request for Proposals

SNAPP (Science for Nature and People Partnership), a groundbreaking
collaboration aimed at solving the world’s most pressing conservation,
economic development and human well-being challenges, announces the 2016
Request for Proposals
[https://www.nceas.ucsb.edu/content/snapp-call-proposals-2016]

*Proposals are due no later than 9:00am PDT on Monday, April 25, 2016.*

SNAPP is designed to find practical, knowledge-based ways in which the
conservation of nature can help provide food, clean water, energy, and
security to Earth’s fast-growing population. The RFP selection process
will prioritize projects which tackle high-profile problems where the
solution has a clear pathway to implementation.

SNAPP utilizes the NCEAS working groups model to gather experts from a
wide range of disciplines, sectors and organizations to synthesize and
analyze existing data, and develop solutions to global challenges over a
two year period. The program invites scientists and specialists from
around the globe to submit proposals for new working groups. In each
case the goal is to fill knowledge gaps and advance solutions to some of
the world’s biggest challenges by identifying ways to create a net
benefit for people and nature.

With 23 SNAPP working groups <http://www.snap.is/groups/> that
collectively include over 400 participants, representing 200
institutions from more than 30 countries, SNAPP is providing an
opportunity for conservation and development partners to be inclusive,
flexible, and innovative. SNAPP is rapidly converting research into
action by generating the type of applied science that today’s complex
problems demand.

In 2013, the Science for Nature and People Partnership (SNAPP) was
created by The Nature Conservancy (TNC), the Wildlife Conservation
Society (WCS) and the National Center for Ecological Analysis and
Synthesis (NCEAS) at the University of California, Santa Barbara. SNAPP
funds, convenes and supports expert Working Groups addressing challenges
in four focus areas: Food Security and Nature, Water Security and
Nature, Community Resilience and Climate Change, and Ecosystem Services
and Biodiversity Benefits.

[ECOLOG-L] Call for Proposals for SNAP: Science for Nature and People

2014-04-01 Thread LeeAnne French
Science for Nature and People (SNAP) releases the 2014 Call for
Proposals seeking projects that use existing data to fill important
knowledge gaps and advance solutions to significant problems at the
intersection of nature conservation and human well-being. Projects must
have the potential to generate clear outcomes for improving livelihoods
and nature conservation, and should examine a geographic scale that can
produce generalizable conclusions and/or replicable solutions.

SNAP is a new partnership between the National Center for Ecological
Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS),The Nature Conservancy (TNC
<http://www.nature.org/>), and the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS
<http://www.wcs.org/>)/. /As a boundary institution SNAP Working Group
projects cross the boundary from analysis to action.

We seek proposals for Working Groups that help answer two overarching
questions:
1) ?How can conservation actions benefit a critical mass of people today
while addressing long-term ecological resilience and sustainability?
2) How can economic development be achieved without irreversible or
severe environmental damage?

SNAP Call for Proposals <https://www.nceas.ucsb.edu/snap/rfp> is
available on the NCEAS website.

For more information about SNAP visit snap.is <http://snap.is>.
Proposals for SNAP Working Groups must be submitted by May 20, 2014 at
12:00 noon PST.

From the Fall 2013 Call for Proposals we have selected six new SNAP
Working Group projects
<https://www.nceas.ucsb.edu/news/announcing-snap-2014-call-proposals-and-six-new-snap-working-groups>.
Each Working Group will bring science to solving some of the world's
biggest challenges involving nature and human well-being --- from urban
water security to hydraulic fracturing's impact on water quality
<http://www.snap.is/groups/hydraulic-fracturing/>, from the sustainable
management of fish stocks
<http://www.snap.is/groups/data-limited-fisheries/> to feeding 9 billion
people without destroying the planet
<http://www.snap.is/groups/ridges-to-reef-fisheries/>.These projects
combine an interdisciplinary synthesis research effort including policy
makers and/or practitioners engaged from the very beginning with a clear
implementation strategy that has the potential for specific, achievable
outcomes through WCS or TNC conservation programs, or through the
broader conservation community.
