Grant Writing Workshop
July 29 - August 3, 2018

Join NSF program director Dr. Leslie Rissler for a six-day hands-on grant 
writing workshop for junior scientists who want to learn strategies, styles, 
and structures to improve their grant proposals. The experience is geared 
toward early career proposal writers including early stage faculty, postdocs, 
and senior graduate students and will include direct discussions and writing 
sessions based on participants’ own proposal ideas. Limited enrollment (12) 
will enable close interaction.

Cost: $250 registration, plus room and board ($262.50 double occupancy or 
$285.25 private accommodation if available).

The Department of Biology at the University of Virginia invites applications 
for a tenure-track Assistant Professor appointment in Evolutionary Ecology. We 
are seeking a colleague whose research complements and expands existing 
strengths within the department and integrates ecology and evolution in natural 
populations. The successful candidate will be expected to establish a vigorous, 
independent, and externally funded research program, and to contribute 
excellence in undergraduate and graduate instruction and training. We are 
particularly enthusiastic about candidates whose research would use the 
Department's Mountain Lake Biological Station, one of the premier North 
American field stations for evolutionary and ecological research.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree and relevant post-doctoral 
experience. A competitive start-up package and excellent research facilities 
are available. The anticipated start date for the position is July 25, 2017.

Mountain Lake Biological Station (University of Virginia) seeks a full-time 
resident Facilities Caretaker to oversee all buildings and grounds 
operations and maintenance for 12-month full-service field station in 
beautiful and rural Giles County Virginia.  MLBS supports research and 
teaching activities for 50-80 scientists, students and families living and 
working at this University of Virginia field research facility.  MLBS is 
busiest in the summer, but is open year-round.  It is located on a 
mountaintop (4,000ft) in southwest Virginia, just 30 minutes outside of the 
vibrant college town of Blacksburg.  MLBS is proud of its friendly, 
supportive and personable atmosphere.  An outgoing, enthusiastic, 
responsible, creative and independent caretaker will fit right in!  The 
MLBS staff is a small team looking for enthusiasm and good ideas.


Caretaker is responsible for, and oversees, all physical plant and grounds 
systems including electrical, plumbing, HVAC, potable water and wastewater 
systems, grounds and gravel road care, building maintenance and repair for 
a wide range of rustic and modern residential and lab building 
construction.  Caretaker is a member of, and reports to, Department of 
Facilities Management on Charlottesville campus of UVA (3hrs from the 
station).  Caretaker also works closely with Department of Biology station 
administrative office, station Director, Associate Director, and Manager.


Benefits include private house on-site with all basic utilities (heat, 
electric, water, business telephone and fax lines, wireless Internet

a resident Station Manager to oversee daily operations. This position will=

support the research, educational and outreach activities at the Station=20
and will work closely with the Associate Director, Director and other=20
faculty members, staff, students and visiting researchers. MLBS is a=20
100-bed residential full-service biological field station on 642 forested=20
acres of a 4,000ft mountaintop in the rural Appalachian Mountains of=20
southwest Virginia =96 but just a half hour drive west of Blacksburg=
 Virginia=20
(home of Virginia Tech.). The Station Manager will provide a wide range of=
=20
functions that include managing station housing and dining operations and=20
the station office. Manager also provides technical, logistical, and=20
administrative support to research and teaching programs, supervises summer=
=20
staff, coordinates subcontracts and station projects, and supervises=20
general activities of the grounds. Manager oversees use of laboratories,=20
equipment, woodworking shop and vehicles. Candidate should have knowledge=20
of various technical, mechanical, and administrative functions pertinent to=
=20
supporting academic activities, including basic laboratory skills, record=20
keeping, library skills, computer competency, skills and safety knowledge=20
related to biological fieldwork, vehicle safety and maintenance, and=20
woodworking shop skills. This position requires the ability to interact and=
=20
communicate positively with a large number of faculty, researchers,=20
students, and public associated with the station. The successful candidate=
=20
will have exceptional organizational skills, enjoy working independently,=20
be physically fit, willing to embrace physical labor, a demanding work=20
environment, and occasional long hours outside in the field in all weather=
=20
conditions. Manager must be able to take primary day-to-day responsibility=
=20
for field station operations during much of the year when the Director and=
=20
Associate Director are not in residence, including irregular hours and=20
weekend days as needed. An understanding of field biology is desirable. A=20
graduate degree in biology or a related field with knowledge of field-based=

research and teaching is desired. Experience at a field station or research=

facility, and experience with experiential education, supervision, managing=

or the hospitality industry will be useful. First aid, EMT, CPR, or other=20
