Re: [ECOLOG-L] Recycling in any place that alleges recycles (e.g. colleges, universities, high schools, etc.)

2017-10-02 Thread Peter Beck
Several years ago a student political group on our campus was spreading
that rumor, that contents of recycle bins were just thrown in the trash
(even though it was not true) in an effort to discourage recycling as they
viewed it as supporting a particular political ideology. I have no idea
how common this is, but you might be interested in including such behavior
in your study, as well as be sure to verify any claims of it happening that
you receive.

2017-05-02 Thread Peter Beck
The Fall 2017 application deadline is approaching for the Professional Science
Master’s in Environmental Management and Sustainability at St. Edward’s
University in Austin, Texas. This program prepares future environmental
managers to manage ecological issues through the combined disciplines of
environmental science and project management. The program has been designed to
provide students with an in-depth knowledge of ecosystems and to enhance their
ability to apply tools and methods for assessing the effects of an increasing
human impact of ecosystems. Project management and Geographic Information
Systems software will be used to help design, implement and evaluate a research
project in environmental management. Field research components at St. Edward’s
Wild Basin Wilderness Preserve and three biological research stations in Costa
Rica provide each student with the opportunity to conduct fieldwork in four
different ecosystems in two different countries. The curriculum consists of
three semesters of coursework at St. Edward’s University in Austin, Texas, a
one-month field research course in Costa Rica in the summer after the first
year and either a required internship or a funded field research project in
Costa Rica supported through an NSF IRES grant, during the spring of the second
year of the program.

Deadline May 15

Re: [ECOLOG-L] Arguments for Native Plants

Also especially important for landscaping purposes, because native plants have
adapted to the local soils and climate, they require less water, fertilizers,
pesticides as well as less pruning and maintenance generally.

Subject: [ECOLOG-L] Arguments for Native Plants

Hello List Members,

I am working with native plants and would like to make sure I have all the
arguments for native plants correct. If I am missing some, please let me
know. My goal is to promote native plants for use in landscaping and
grazing.

Native plants provide habitat and food for native wildlife. This is
particularly important with increasing urban development and the habitat
loss that goes along with development.

Native plants make up a large part of the ecological heritage of an area.
They made up the environment in which the first settlers lived and the
resources they used.

Native plants are less likely to become invasive because the herbivores,
parasites, and pathogens they evolved with are still present.

That is all I have at the moment. Please let me know what other arguments I
need to add or how I can strengthen the ones I already have.

Thanks!
