2014-10-16 Thread Puni Jeyasingh
Dear all,
We are happy to announce a Theo Murphy discussion meeting entitled,
"Elements, genomes and ecosystems: cascading nitrogen and phosphorus impacts
across levels of biological organization" funded by the Royal Society of
London to be held in Buckinghamshire, U.K. June 1-2 2015. The meeting is
open to everyone, but space is limited. Please visit the following website
to request an invitation to
register:https://royalsociety.org/events/2015/06/elements-genomes-ecosystems/.

The reason for this early message is to advertise funds from the U.S.
National Science Foundation to help support the travel expenses of U.S.
graduate students and postdocs. Applicants from underrepresented groups are
specifically encouraged to apply. We will begin review of applications on
December 15th 2014 to identify suitable candidates for receiving these
limited awards.

Please go here for information on applying:

[ECOLOG-L] Gordon Graduate Seminar in Ecology

2008-05-30 Thread Puni Jeyasingh
Subject: Gordon Research Seminar in Ecology for Grad.
Students and Post-docs.

This message is to bring to your attention a Graduate
Research Seminar (GRS) this July (5th and 6th) in
conjunction with the Gordon Research Conference (GRC),
Metabolic Basis of Ecology (July 6th-11th). This
year’s conference looks to be outstanding; a list of
speakers can be found at:

http://www.grc.org/programs.aspx?year=2008&program=metbasis

The purpose of the GRS is to facilitate interaction
among graduate students and postdocs the weekend prior
to the GRC. Also, given the high caliber of many of
the GRC conferees, grad student and postdoc
involvement has been limited in the past. A key goal
of the GRS is to prepare young scientists for greater
participation during the GRC.

Eight grad students and/or postdocs will give talks
during that weekend on topics ranging from dynamics at
the cellular, organismal, and population levels to the
flow of energy and materials in communities and
landscapes in a format identical to the GRC.

More information can be found here:
http://www.grc.org/programs.aspx?year=2008&program=grad_metab

FUNDS ARE AVAILABLE TO SUPPORT REGISTRATION AND
TRAVEL!

SPACE AND FUNDS ARE LIMITED! There is room for only
35!

APPLICATION DEADLINE: JUNE 14TH

We look forward to meeting you in beautiful Maine this
summer!

Sincerely,

Puni Jeyasingh

[ECOLOG-L] Great Plains Limnology Conference

2008-08-26 Thread Puni Jeyasingh
Dear fellow aquatic scientists,
Please find attached the 1st call for papers for the 35th Annual Great
Plains Limnology Conference and the 3rd Triennial meeting of the
Oklahoma-Texas Aquatic Research Group.
This year's meetings will be held jointly at the University of Oklahoma
Biological Station.
A web page has been established for online registration and abstract
submission (see attached flyer).
In addition to a student exemption from the registration fee, other student
financial assistance will be available on request.
The steering committee has been working hard to put together a great meeting
this year (the previous joint meeting of 2002 set the bar pretty high!), and
with your help their efforts will pay off.

Please feel free to forward this announcement to your colleagues and
students who may not be on the GPLC list serve (and please suggest to them
that they join up -see below for instructions).

Looking forward to seeing lots of familiar and new faces in September.

On behalf of the GPLC-OTARG 2008 steering committee (Dan Roelke, Rich Zamor,
Dave Hambright, Puni Jeyasingh),

[ECOLOG-L] PhD position in ecological stoichiometry and ionomics

2018-04-13 Thread Puni Jeyasingh
Puni Jeyasingh's research group at Oklahoma State University (
http://puni.okstate.edu/) is recruiting a doctoral student interested in
discovering fundamental rules underlying biomass production. Specifically,
we seek to illuminate adjustments in the processing of all elements in a
cell or organism (i.e. its ionome) in response to differential supply of
elements that are known to limit growth (e.g., carbon, nitrogen,
phosphorus). Such adjustments should carry substantial costs, although very
little is known. We primarily study aquatic (freshwater) organisms using
chemostats, and in-lake mesocosms. Candidates will learn basic theories
describing growth, experimental ecology using post-genomic era tools,
and analyses
of high dimensional data. Such work can prepare the student for a career in
academia, industry, or government, depending on the specific topic chosen
for the dissertation.

The position will be funded (stipend + health insurance + tuition waivers)
via research and/or teaching assistantships for the entirety of the
doctoral program, pending satisfactory performance. The position is
available as early as the Fall 2018 semester (mid-August).

Selection process:
1) Email Puni indicating interest (along with CV);
puni.jeyasi...@okstate.edu
2) Preliminary dialog/e-interview to determine fit
3) Apply formally to the OSU Graduate College (a BS or MS in a biological
field is required to be considered for admission to the doctoral program).
