[ECOLOG-L] Registration Now Open for 350 Climate Conference
We are pleased and honored to announce the upcoming *350 Climate Conferencehttp://www.350conference.org/ *to be held at Columbia University in the city of New York on Saturday May 2nd. The conference will feature* *keynote speaker* Dr. James Hansen*, director of NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies. Determining the safe upper limit for atmospheric carbon dioxide is likely to be one of the most significant research questions of the 21st century. Dr. Hansen has made the case that this number is likely to be 350 parts per million (ppm) of CO2 or lower. Unfortunately, at present we find ourselves at 387 ppm and climbing. This conference will discuss the scientific, political, social and economic challenges and opportunities associated with reducing CO2 and mitigating climate change. Other speakers include *Majora Carter*, founder of Sustainable South Bronx, *Dr. Johannes Lehmann*, leading researcher on biochar carbon sequestration from Cornell University, *Dr. Daniel Hillel*, international authority on soils, hydrology, and sustainable agriculture from the Center for Climate Systems Research, *Michael Gerrard, JD*, director of the newly founded Center for Climate Change Law at Columbia University and *Professor Richard Heinberg*, author and lecturer on energy policy and solutions to climate change. Please visit our website at www.350conference.org for further information on additional speakers or to register http://www.350conference.org/. Seating is limited so please register soon! *REGISTER NOW* http://350conference.eventbrite.com/ -- http://www.350Conference.org May 2nd, 2009 | Columbia University 350confere...@gmail.com Telephone: (740) 258-8450
[ECOLOG-L] Powerful New Carbon Sequestration Tool!
Dear Climate Solutions Thinkers, A powerful new carbon sequestration tool has recently been uncovered by two Columbia University professors. The technique, known as mineral sequestration, has the potential to sequester upwards of ten percent of annual anthropogenic CO2 emissions in a safe, stable and long-term carbon sink with relatively small energy requirements. You can read about it on our website: www.GlobalClimateSolutions.org As always, we welcome contributions to the dialog about how we can confront the greatest threat that has ever faced humanity. Please visit our website to find how you can contribute your solutions! Respectfully, Ryan D. [ECOLOG-L] Climate Solutions, Sustainable Agriculture, and Water Purification
Dear Climate Solutions Thinkers, Learn how several NGO's are teaming up to solve the water crisis in developing countries while simultaneously building better soils, improving crops, and helping to sequester carbon from the atmosphere! Sound impossible? You can read about it on our blog: www.GlobalClimateSolutions.org We're constantly on the search for cutting-edge solutions to climate change. If you would like to contribute please visit our website and send us an email. Respectfully, Ryan D. [ECOLOG-L] Chairman of IPCC on State of Climate, Hansen, and Biochar
Dear Climate Solutions Thinker, I had the opportunity to speak with Dr. R. K. Pachauri this past week when he visited Columbia University. I asked him about the state of the climate, his take on James Hansen's research suggesting that 350 ppm is the safe upper limit of atmospheric carbon dioxide (we're at 387 ppm now), and if he knew about biochar. You can read about it at our website: www.globalclimatesolutions.org Respectfully, Ryan D. [ECOLOG-L] Dr. James Hansen and Others Endorse Biochar as Vital Solution to Climate Change
Dear Climate Solution Thinkers: Read the latest endorsements of Carbon Negative Energy from Biochar Production at www.GlobalClimateSolutions.org including Dr. James Hansen who has recently stated that: Carbon sequestration in soil also has significant potential. Biochar, produced in pyrolysis of residues from crops, forestry, and animal wastes, can be used to restore soil fertility while storing carbon for centuries to millennia. Biochar helps soil retain nutrients and fertilizers, reducing emissions of GHGs such as N2O. Replacing slash-and-burn agriculture with slash-and-char and use of agricultural and forestry wastes for biochar production could provide a CO2 drawdown of ~8 ppm or more in half a century. As always, we're looking for serious sustainable solutions to climate change. If you would like to submit a piece please visit our website for instructions. What we choose to do--or not to do--will make all the difference. Be determined to work together and to win! Respectfully, Ryan D. [ECOLOG-L] Greening the Desert w/ Permaculture and Biochar
Dear Climate Solution Thinkers: Drought and desertification are likely results of global climate change. The forcing effects that are already in the system will likely bring serious challenges to many regions of the world in the form of water scarcity. How do we deal with this challenge using sustainable solutions? Visit our most recent blog at www.GlobalClimateSolutions.org to find out.
