2018-02-22 Thread Amy Marcarelli
*Research Experience for Undergraduates in Stream Ecology – Michigan Tech,
Summer 2018*

The Marcarelli Aquatic Ecosystem Ecology Lab is searching for a motivated
student in Ecology, Biology, or Environmental Science for a NSF Research
Experience for Undergraduates (REU) position. The student will work closely
with Dr. Marcarelli and her graduate students to study the balance between
nitrogen fixation and denitrification in streams and rivers. The REU
student will design a research project, conduct field work, analyze samples
and data, and synthesize findings related to the core questions of this
project:

1. How do nitrogen cycle processes co-exist in small streams, large rivers,
and adjacent wetlands?

2. How does nutrient enrichment shift the balance among nitrogen cycle
processes?

3. How does community composition of algae and microbes relate to rates of
nitrogen cycle processes?

There will be opportunities to conduct field work in the Upper Peninsula
of Michigan, participate in undergraduate research workshops, and present
research results to the Michigan Tech community and possibly at a national
conference.

The candidate must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States
and enrolled as an undergraduate student in Fall 2018. The REU is expected
to last 10 weeks (start/end date negotiable but should occur between June 1

[ECOLOG-L] Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) in the Rocky Mountains Summer 2018

2018-02-21 Thread Brad Taylor
Undergraduate research opportunity to work as part of a team exploring the
consequences of climate-induced species range shifts on ecosystem functioning
(e.g.,
nutrient cycling) in subalpine ponds in the Colorado Rockies. The position
provides a
weekly stipend, housing, meals, travel to the site, and participation in a REU
Training and
Responsible Conduct of Research Program beginning as early as mid May and
ending in
mid August.

This research is motivated by the fact that species distributions around the
world are
shifting in response to a changing climate but we known little about how these
shifts in
elevation, latitude, or among local habitats will affect ecosystem processes
such as
nutrient cycling. More than 25 years of continuous study of the distribution
and
abundance of aquatic animals in high-elevation ponds in the Rocky Mountains of
Colorado has revealed that species common at low elevations are moving towards
higher
elevations, and within elevations, animals are moving into different habitat
types (i.e.,
temporary to semi-permanent pond) as drying regimes become more extreme. The
main
research project focuses on a guild of case-making caddisflies (see left photo)
that vary
considerably in their contribution to ecosystem processes and their response to
climate-
induced changes in pond hydrology.

We are seeking an undergraduate student interested in exploring the
contribution of
additional animal species to nutrient cycling. Specifically, the REU will take
a lead role in
measuring nitrogen and phosphorus excretion rates of animals and nitrogen and
phosphorus uptake by water column and benthic plants and microbes in subalpine
ponds
that differ in hydroperiod and animal community composition to explore the
following
questions: 1) How does nutrient supply via excretion by species in the
biomass-dominant
caddisfly guild compare to excretion by other pond species, such as midge
larvae,
zooplankton, and salamanders? 2) What proportion of nutrient demand by algae
and
other microbes is supplied by the focal guild of detritivorous caddisflies
versus other
pond animals?

The REU will work with a diverse group of undergraduates, graduate students,
post-docs,
and PIs from North Carolina State University (www.bradwtaylor.com), other
universities,
and will be immersed in a vibrant research and education community at the Rocky
Mountain Biological Laboratory (see www.rmbl.edu). The position requires
spending 8-10
weeks (mid-May to mid August) at this rustic and remote but premier
high-elevation
(3000 m) field station near Crested Butte, Colorado. The ideal applicant should
demonstrate interest and experience in field ecology as well as experience or
willingness
to master meticulous analytical chemical analyses. Applicants should also be
comfortable
working in remote field settings that can have rapidly changing weather
conditions, and
that includes hiking 1-2 h to 3400 m elevation study sites. Preference will
also be given
to applicants who present a plan to work on writing and analyses as part of an
independent study or senior thesis for eventual publication beyond the summer.
The REU
will have some flexibility to develop additional questions and hypotheses for
which they
will receive mentoring assistance with methods, data and chemical analyses, and
writing.

Send a resume, 1-page statement of current and future scientific interests and
experiences, and names and contact information for 3 references included in one
PDF file
to Brad Taylor: brad.tay...@ncsu.edu by 10 March 2018. A commitment by 25
March
2018 is required.

applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race,
color,
national origin, religion, sex, gender identity, age, sexual orientation,

[ECOLOG-L] Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) in Ethiopia

2015-12-17 Thread Travis Reynolds
CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: REU SITE IN ETHIOPIA
Application deadline: February 15, 2016.
Website: http://www.colby.edu/reu-in-ethiopia/

We are now accepting applications for a NSF Research Experiences for
Undergraduates (REU) program based at Colby College and South Gondar,
Ethiopia. This REU will provide eight American undergraduate students from
diverse academic backgrounds an opportunity to conduct path-breaking
interdisciplinary research on the ecological, economic and cultural roles of
church forests. Church forests are patches of Afromontane forest surrounding
Ethiopian Orthodox churches. Preserved for centuries by church leaders and
communities as religious sanctuaries, church forests are, in many parts of
Ethiopia, the only indigenous forests left.

Under the eight-week summer REU program students will receive training at
Colby College (Maine, USA) in ecological field methods (restoration ecology,
stream ecology), social survey research, spatial analysis using Geographic
Information Systems (GIS), and written and oral communication. They will
then travel to South Gondar, Ethiopia to conduct hands-on fieldwork with
mentors from Colby College, the California Academy of Sciences, and
Ethiopian academic and government institutions.

Completed applications including 2 letters of recommendation are due by
February 15th. The 2016 Summer REU Site program will run from July 6th –
August 24th (approximate). All travel costs will be covered by NSF and the
summer program includes a generous stipend. All participants must be U.S.
citizens or permanent residents enrolled at a U.S. college or university at
the time of the program (seniors graduating in Spring 2016 are not eligible).

Details about the project and application instructions can be found at:

If you are an undergraduate student I figured I would alert you that REU's
are outstanding opportunities for learning and figuring out what direction
you want to go with your career/future.

I participated in an REU at Illinois State as an undergraduate and it 100%
convinced me what I wanted to do. A friend of mine also did undergraduate
research of this sort, and after 6 weeks decided he never wanted to do
research again, today he is a pharmacist and perfectly happy. That really
is the point of an REU, pay an undergrad to experience what a career in
research is about.

I loved it, my friend hated it. But neither of us would have had a clue
had we not done it.

Just a thought for the undergrads who might have read the advertisement
from Travis and wondered about it.

[ECOLOG-L] Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) in Ethiopia

2015-11-23 Thread Travis Reynolds
In December we will begin accepting applications for the Summer 2016 NSF
Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program based at Colby College
and in South Gondar, Ethiopia. This REU provides eight American
undergraduate students from diverse academic backgrounds an opportunity to
conduct path-breaking interdisciplinary research on the ecological, economic
and cultural roles of church forests. Church forests are patches of
Afromontane forest surrounding Ethiopian Orthodox churches. Preserved for
centuries by church leaders and communities as religious sanctuaries, church
forests are, in many parts of Ethiopia, the only indigenous forests left.
Under the eight-week summer REU program students will receive training at
Colby College in ecological field methods, spatial analysis using Geographic
Information Systems (GIS), social survey research, and written and oral
communication. They will then travel to South Gondar, Ethiopia to conduct
hands-on fieldwork with mentors from Colby College, the California Academy
of Sciences, and local academic and government institutions. Applications
will be accepted beginning December 1, 2015. The application deadline is
February 15, 2016 via the REU-in-Ethiopia webite:
http://www.colby.edu/reu-in-ethiopia.

position on a long-term study of plant and animal phenology at the HJ
Andrews Experimental Forest in the Central Cascades of Oregon. This
study attempts to understand the influence of microclimate heterogeneity
on phenology and trophic responses to change in climate and disturbance.
The REU participant will work as part of a team observing and
collecting plants and insects at plots distributed across topographic
and vegetation gradients. The student will develop a study to test
different insect trapping and biomass estimation methods and will
investigate relationships between microclimate and insect abundance.
This position is an excellent opportunity for individuals interested in
ecology, natural history or forestry to gain valuable field research
experience. The 10-week REU position will begin in mid-May, with modest
flexibility in start date to accommodate spring class schedules.

The REU student will be housed at the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest,
a 16,000-acre ‘living laboratory’ representative of forest and
stream ecosystems in the western cascades. With a 60-year research
history and large tracts of old-growth and mature forest, the Andrew
Forest provides students with unparalleled opportunities to deepen
understanding of forest ecology. The field station has modern apartments
with full kitchens, a well-equipped computer lab, and wireless internet
(see http://andrewsforest.oregonstate.edu/ for more information on the
site, facilities and research programs at the HJ Andrews Experimental
Forest). The region provides outstanding opportunities for outdoor
recreation, and is widely considered among the most scenic in the

Summer Undergraduate Research Opportunity, Stream Ecology, University of
Georgia.

We seek a motivated student to participate in a National Science Foundation
Research Experience for Undergraduate (REU) opportunity in stream ecology
and nutrient criteria. Human land use continues to increase the loading of
nutrients to inland waters. Streams draining landscapes that vary in land
use (agricultural, suburban, urban) typically have distinct levels of
nitrogen (N) and phosphorous (P) that correspond to the source of the
nutrient pollution. The student will investigate the effects of nutrient
loading on stream ecosystems and will contribute to a larger ongoing
project that focuses on stream ecosystem responses to different enrichment
N:P ratios (2:1 – 128:1) The student will work alongside a PhD student to
help design and execute lab and field studies to measure algal and
heterotrophic responses to varying substrate and water column N and P
concentrations. The PI, postdoc and doctoral student will mentor the
student through the collection and analysis of data, as well as the
presentation and publication of results.

This project is based out of the Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory and
associated with the Coweeta LTER. As such, the student on this project will
work in residence at Coweeta where they will interact with interns, other
REU students, graduate students and faculty from various universities. The
student will participate in the Coweeta LTER Summer Meeting, which includes
a research symposium of talks by graduate students and faculty.

Stipend will be $450/week for 9 weeks (June 11 – August 3, 2012), plus
