I found the solution, you can allow or block by MAC address under the policy
rules section which works fine.

there a file I can manually edit to get the MAC address filtering to work?

[Efw-user] uplink editor not working

2009-11-30 Thread Steven Sher
I have installed the Endian 2.3 and have huge problems with multiple red
uplinks.

The editor does not seem to save the changes when editing the second uplink, it
only saves the settings when you create a new uplink.

But now when I try create a new uplink, when I click to save the new uplink, it
returns a blank page and does not create the link?

Can anybody please help with this?

Thanks

Steve,

Putty into the firewall from it's green IP and goto /var/efw/uplinks.
Here you will find a separate folder for each uplink. Check the settings
file for each uplink and make sure that no 2 are using the same ETH
device.

If you need to remove the uplink, delete the whole folder. If you delete
the Main uplink, use the Network wizard to recreate it.

Today I had a windows 2000/IE6 client having problems
opening their home page.

Their http proxy is set to run as transparent. I decided to
try changing the client's IE to use the proxy server by
entering its IP and using port 8080, and to bypass the proxy
for local addresses, and her home page came right up.

In the past on my own efw, I've had odd things happen - like
a flash window within a page not being able to load. The
rest of the page would load, but not one small section of
it. I turned off transparent, and used 'no authentication,
and set IE to use my efw directly. (ToolsInternet
OptionsConnection tabLan settings button)

You might also run top to see if some process is using too
much cpu time...

Hello,

First of all I would like to apologize to everybody for the lack of news
during the last months.
I can assure you that we have not forgotten you - on the contrary: right
now we are planning a community portal which will give you lots of
possibilities to interact with us.
However, please understand that we cannot concentrate all our resources
on that portal (unlike others we do not have millions of venture capital
at our disposal).
It will take time until we will be able complete it. Additionally we
also plan to move our repository from subversion to bazaar. By doing
this we will finally be able to open our source repository for you.

Talking about new versions: We will release a new Endian Firewall
Community version in a few weeks. I cannot tell you the exact date yet,
but it will be quite soon. This new release will include lots of
bugfixes and it will be updateable as well.
As you may have noticed it will not be a 2.3 release but the final 2.2
release.
Version 2.3 will be released when it's done. However, I can promise
that the interval between the releases of 2.2 and 2.3 will be
significantly shorter than the one between 2.2rc3 and 2.2 final.

Kind regards and thank you for your patience and support,
Christian and the whole Endian team

Re: [Efw-user] RES: Any word on the EFW 2.3?

2009-05-04 Thread Steven Sher
Only problem is Endian is rather expensive especially for countries with a weak
exchange rates. Endian don’t offer you many options. Like a cheap option for
updates to the open source edition or other creative options.

While we discussing Endian as a general rule they are extremely poor at
communicating to the open source community who follow the product, version
timelines are impossible to obtain, even feedback is extremely limited.
Features have supposedly been completed but not available to the open source
community to test, which you would think would benefit them and their
enterprise clients by more thorough testing?

Anyway I love the product but I think their business philosophy is preventing
them from growing. Maybe somebody from Endian or somebody who knows more, can
provide some real feedback?

Looking forward to a positive response.

Perhaps somone from Endian could chime in with a more definite timeline for

If you're using more than one phone, I would recommend at least trying
the SIP Proxy in transparent mode.

 -Matt

Have you actually used the proxy ?

I have both 2.2RC2 community and 2.2 Enterprise and the SIP proxy
doesn't seem to work ( at least with Asterisk )

The documentation doesn't say much. Do the RTP ports used by Asterisk
 (rtp.conf)
have to agree with the ports used by the proxy?
With the proxy on I was able to make outbound calls, but inbound calls
 ( which were
 working ) have stopped working.

The only think I could get to work was turning the proxy off and port
 forwarding
5060 and 1 thru 10021 to Asterisk, and restricting Asterisk to
 those rtp ports.

 Lee

Sadly, no, I've never been able to get the SIP Proxy to work as I wanted
it. Very frustrating. I was just making a suggestion as I was in the
same boat as you at one point, I finally just forwarded ports.

 -Matt

Thought I would provide some feedback, using the sip proxy got two snom
 phones working behind the firewall.

 Steve

Did you have to do anything special with the SIP Proxy or did you
configure it for transparent mode?

What exactly did you do to get it working as this has plagued me for a
while.

-Matt

Hi Matt

Nothing special, activate both the standard and transparent sip proxy, kept all
the setting default, just worked. I did try this sometime last year and it did
not work for me, on another box with a different version of Endian, but seems
to be working fine now.

Hi Steven,
Under the configuration for RED interface, you can add multiple IP addresses.
Then, when creating your rules, specify which IP to listen on. There may be a
better way to do this, but I just re-run the Network Configuration wizard.
When you get to the screen for the RED interface, look for a spot to add
additional IP addresses. Then those IP's will be available when creating your
NAT rules.

Hi Keith

You wouldn't happen to have the installation documented or a mini how-to? :)

Steven

I run a couple of Endian installations with NRPE installed.

I try to make sure its secure as possible by
- making sure it uses SSL for communication with the Nagios host.
- make sure the nagios hosts allowed to connect is kept to a strictly
controlled list
- configure NRPE to *not* accept externally provided parameters - this
can be a bit inconvenient with a large number of internal servers but
this is likely to be the weakest part of NRPE.

You're right to be concerned - any open port is a possible weakness in a
firewall but the overall resilience of the infrastructure as a whole can
only be improved by continually monitoring it.

As an aside, I prefer to use OpsView rather than raw Nagios - it has a
much better admin interface and includes some graphing as standard. I
also like to use SmokePing to keep and eye on teh network.

Regards

Keith

I need to open up a port for NRPE anyway, why not just run it on the
firewall. It would allow me to use Endain both as a firewall and
extend its functionality by adding in monitoring capabilities I could
use the NRPE daemon to monitor as many hosts inside my internal
network without my public Nagios server ever having to enter any
 internal network.

Does anybody have any thoughts on this idea, my Endian knowledge is
only minor to say the least, would this even work?

 Thanks

An Open source version might be a nice idea, maybe Endian could use it
to test some of their new Endian Network features before moving it
across to their Enterprise support customers.

Has anyone managed to get NRPE working on EFW? (I've been ripping my

anywhere
with it) This way, Nagios could be used for monitoring.

[Efw-user] Endian Network

2008-11-11 Thread Steven Sher
Hi Endian Team

Would there be any chance of allowing the Endian Open source community
to link their boxes to the Endian network for basic monitoring?

Maybe charge a small fee if you must? Something along the lines of what
DynDns.com charge for their dynamic DNS service.

I would be more than willing to pay a small fee say 12$ per year per box
to connect my Open Source Endian box to the Endian network to monitor if
it's up or down, get email alerts, and some basic reporting. I would
not expect the full feature set of Endian Network.

Any thoughts, would anybody else be interested in something like this?
I think this would benefit Endian as much as it would help the guys
running the Open Source version.

Looking forward to your response.

Thanks

Steve

Re: [Efw-user] Endian Remote Manager

2008-11-10 Thread Steven Sher
Open port 10443 under external access, that will give you remote access to the
box.

You can also enable ssh under system, and open port 22 on external access, if
you need ssh access.

Lastly if you don’t have a static IP configure dynamic DNS

Hope this helps

I have searched but can't find a list of any supported PCI ADSL modems -

Are there any known working PCI ADSL modems?

I'm going to be running SIP/VoIP through efw - if anyone else has good

Re: [Efw-user] Endian 2.2rc1 and SIP

2008-07-03 Thread Steven Sher
My experience with 2.2rc1 is simply way to many issues to use in any
production environment.

I did try 2.1.x I ran an asterisk box behind Endian running an IAX2
trunk through it without too many hassles for a while as a test, worked
ok, did have to restart Endian once in a while, not sure if the problem
was really Endian or my Asterisk box though.

Does anyone contribute to this list or just complaint about release
dates?

I'd love to troubleshoot this issue... perhaps even help get it resolved
in the eminent release 2.2rc2.

As I see it, the issue did not exist in 1.8. I skipped 2.1.x because of
issues with port forwarding and AV updating, so I can not comment on if
the issue is in that release.

I'm seeing nothing in the SIP proxy logs... so I'm thinking that the
issue may be there somewhere; though, the issue persists even when the
proxy is disabled.

I find it difficult to believe that I am the only person needing to run
a SIP device behind Endian. Can anyone else chime in on this with some
experience or a perspective?

I am using a VoIP service that does not support BYOD. I have been using
this service for a while with Endian 1.8 w/out issue; however, once I
moved to 2.2rc1 I am unable to get audio into my SIP device. Audio out
works fine.

I've attempted port forwarding the ports used for the RTP stream, SIP
ports, etc. No luck.

I have also attempted to do a 1:1 NAT and it still does not function
properly.

I enabled the SIP proxy with no change. I ran siproxyd from the command
line to see if I could get some debug output. I edited the
/etc/siproxyd.conf file to trigger some messages. I was unable to get
any debug output.

Does anyone else have any suggestions regarding this? Anyone else
experiencing this issue? I'm at a loss.

Re: [Efw-user] Endian 2.2 RC2 Release Date

2008-06-26 Thread Steven Sher
Intentionally or unintentionally Endian have created a environment that
does not really allow the community to participate fully, or easily at
least.

Endian keeps things very close to their chest so to speak. Buying the
commercial package is simply not in the budget at this stage and does
not conform to our philosophy. I would be more than happy to buy
Endian for commercial support when required. I would love to offer
testing on updated releases and provide feedback, if there was something
being released. By simply requesting for information that clearly other
people are looking for as well, is this not participating?

In Short Endian does not really allow us community members to contribute
easily.

I would like to get some feedback from Endian on my thoughts.
