Re: [Ekiga-list] Announcement: this mailing list will be retired by the end of Oct 2022
Hi, I’ve received several questions during the past days which possibly makes sense to summarize in a single topic [1] which I can then reference. Hopefully this specific post will help anyone looking for the same set of answers as well. If any additional common question arises I’ll make sure to add it to this same topic in Discourse. Thanks and please let us know if you have any questions around Discourse or your onboarding process! [Ekiga-list] Announcement: this mailing list will be retired by the end of Oct 2022
Hi, As we have been communicating during the past few months GNOME's Mailman platform is being decommissioned (python2 deprecation, major burden in managing lists spam). The deadline is currently set to the end of October 2022. Mailing list subscribers are invited to migrate to GNOME's Discourse instance [1]. Neil made sure [2] to create a set of tags you can re-use to initiate a new topic in the new platform, if a tag is missing please reach out to me directly. Jehan (from the GIMP Team) kindly provided some instructions you can follow [3] in order to safely migrate your reading workflow to Discourse. The new platform supports several login methods including your GNOME Account and other major OpenID providers. After the deadline of the end of October Mailman archives will remain alive in read only mode for posterity. If the mailing list was used behind an alias, please let me know so we can re-do the same setup but on Discourse instead. Thanks, P.S All the l10n lists are still pending code changes in damned-lies, the deadline to decommission those lists may slip by a week or two depending how soon those changes will be made available in DL codebase [1] https://discourse.gnome.org [2] https://mail.gnome.org/archives/desktop-devel-list/2022-September/msg00018.html [3] https://discourse.gnome.org/t/welcome-to-gimp-forum-on-gnome-discourse/11534/5 -- Cheers, Andrea Principal Systems Engineer at Red Hat, GNOME Infrastructure Team Coordinator, Former GNOME Foundation Board of Directors Secretary, GNOME Foundation Membership & Elections Committee Chairman Homepage: https://www.dragonsreach.it _______ ekiga-list mailing list ekiga-list@gnome.org https://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/ekiga-list

Re: [Ekiga-list] ekiga-list Digest, Vol 150, Issue 1
Note that the Ekiga software is immediately available to all Ubuntu Linux users (including Kubuntu and the like) in the normal Ubuntu software directory. I have installed it in my Kubuntu 18.04.4 LTS system. I have tried to register the following SIP address at ekiga.net but I am not at all assured that the server is functional. I also have Linphone installed on a Windows 10 system and have likewise registered that address at sip.linphone.org. However due to a complete lack of opportunity I have not been able to test either software set. Note that I also have an older laptop that is currently running Kubuntu 20.04, but I haven't even checked if I can install Ekiga on it. Since both Ekiga and Linphone claim to use the SIP protocol, then by just switching the registration, users OUGHT to be able to use the ekiga.net -or- sip.linphone.org server with either or both software installations. Also worth exploring is whether sipbroker.com is still functional and can be used for calls between these SIP servers. Last but not least Ekiga claims also to use the H.323 protocol, which I haven't heard mentioned since Microsoft Netmeeting <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_NetMeeting> disappeared from view in 2007. Due to a lack of opportunity for use, I don't normally run either the Ekiga or Linphone software, thus if I were to add the following back into my contact information block, it would be added to the 'advance arrangement only' section! [Ekiga-list] ekiga distribution
Hi people, I have asked myself if "ekiga" is still actively maintained. I'd like to support you with packaging ekiga and distribute it on flathub and build flatpack images to get ridd of building ekiga by hand. flatpack: https://flatpak.org/ about flatpack: https://docs.flatpak.org/en/latest/ I have tested very long time ago ekiga, and built it on my linux machine, still it gives me headache to build it. So, if you support me building ekiga on Gentoo Linux, I would be happy to make myself familiar making binaries for flathub, so that ekiga is easily distributed for all Linux Architectures, and that nobody has to build by hand anymore ekiga through sourcecode. best, Tamer ___ ekiga-list mailing list ekiga-list@gnome.org https://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/ekiga-list
[Ekiga-list] Suggested hardware?
I have installed Ekiga and started reading the docs. I was wondering if there are suggested headsets, cameras, microphones, etc. and other non-computing hardware? Items that are known to work well on a Linux computer? Over the next month I want to get a system fully setup for telephone use, video calls, and video conferences. My understanding is that some of the features require a PBX, but I don't think that is installed by default. Am I correct on this? Thanks for any suggestions. Unfortunately I have few friends who care about computer use or anything they use on them (they're all the kind who could care less, just so it works, and of course they're all M$ users too), so I never was able to install and use Ekiga, though I sure wish I could. Presently, if there's any cost whatsoever involved, I'm unable to use it as I've fallen on hard times and barely able to keep a roof over my head much less spend a few dollars on something for software use. I am using Ekiga 4.0.2 for MS Windows 10. I was able to configure the softphone to receive calls, but not to make calls. When I try to call a PSTN number, a new window appears but nothing happens. I tried the number with and without international prefix and also disabling the firewall. I receive correctly the calls, I am able to answer, but if I want to start a call, I am not able to do it. [Ekiga-list] Video seems to not be transmitted over h323 using H264
Hello, I am experiencing a problem similar to what is decribed in this older thread: black video sent from ekiga on linux mint https://mail.gnome.org/archives/ekiga-list/2013-September/thread.html#00040 In short, on my work computer I have two different versions of Ubuntu installed, with roughly the same setup. I am connecting using H323 to a specific endpoint and I am getting different behavior. On my older Ubuntu 16.04 distro, everything looks good, I (and others) can see the image from my webcam. On my newer Ubuntu 18.04 (Kubuntu actually), the image from my webcam seems to be completely black and this is confirmed by other participants, note that I can see their image fine. On this newer distro, the problem disappears if I deactivate h264 (and h263) and revert to h261 (although the image is at quite lower resolution. If I just test the webcam using the preview or try to see the local stream during a meeting it works fine. I tried debugging the ekiga sessions using '-d 4', I was only able to spot some FFMPEG errors in the case of my newer distro ("FFMPEG non-existing PPS 0 referenced" and then "FFMPEG decode_slice_header error"). Here are the 2 debugging outputs. Re: [Ekiga-list] Call disconnecting from conference room after ~30 seconds
Hi again, I wouldn't worry about this one after all. It turns out that this problem affects all calls, not just conference room (it just so happened all my calls were brief!) However, I imagine it's the issue described here ( http://wiki.ekiga.org/index.php/Enable_port_forwarding_manually). Since I only started getting the error about this after using Ekiga for a little while, I assumed it was a red-herring since I'd already set up my SIP account network settings. On reflection, this is something different (general settings, not account settings), though, so it probably is this. I can't do port forwarding as I'm on a network with others and so would be monopolising those ports, so I'm going to look into different VOIP software. Thought I should post an update in case others hit this issue (and to prevent anyone feeling the need to trawl through the log file!) Re: [Ekiga-list] Ekiga.net discontinued
Hi Bret, Thank you for your email and support. You are absolutely right... Actually, Ekiga, the software, is not discontinued. Ekiga.net, the SIP platform that goes with it, will be shutting down by the end of the year. However, actually, the state of the software is not better. I have actively maintained ekiga during more or less 12 to 13 years. A new version is nearly ready (without instant messaging support anymore, and without STUN/NAT support). A few years ago, I asked for help to finish it. It was a call to developers, but nobody answered. Having to maintain the software, the SIP platform, the websites, the manuals, the documentation for that new release alone is simply not possible. It would be if I was unemployed. But in that case, the "free" as "free beer" aspect of Open Source would be annoying for me :-) So well, if developers want to keep working on the Ekiga software, they are welcome. The code is in GNOME's git, available for everyone! You have to peer with friends and/or sign up with a general tunnel broker like he.net. There are other sites offering free IP4 SIP call brokering (generally charging for POTS connections to make their money). I moved to Linphone (another open source SIP client) because it supported IPv6. Peer to peer SIP really requires IPv6. The Cjdns IPv6 mesh VPN allows authenticated, encrypted peer to peer calls anywhere in the world without any exchange of certs, etc, and a device keeps its IP as it moves around. The IPv6 is a hash of the public key of the node. Even without a VPN, IPv6 allows direct peer to peer without needing a public IP4 or a centralized site to help with all the NAT workarounds. Ekiga does a number of things better than linphone (e.g. addressbook). But the lack of IPv6 was a deal killer. There were efforts to add IPv6 support to ekiga, but never finished that I was aware of. Actually, IPv6 support in Linphone is a pain - it can't listen on IP4 (for commercial SIP to POTS services) and IP6 simultaneously. You have to switch back and forth in preferences. I am wondering whether, given that Ekiga is said to be open source, rather than, as its owner, simply shutting it down, it would not be more appropriate and consistent with the (perceived) nature of open source,, to seek a new group of people, to take it on, for the sake of its continuance. More and more good Linux software, has been abandoned/discontinued, and, with MS apparently determined to progressively eliminate skype (MS has been p[rogressively hobbling skype, since MS bought it out), a developing technology in IT - the means od making video calls, amongst other uses, is being eliminated. It is a bit like, if Alexander Bell had decided that he had had enough of trying to develop telephony, and said "Stuff it - I've had enough - I am going to put it all into boxes and bury it.", rather than passing it on to others to continue the development. Imagine what the world would be like, if we had not had telephony. Imagine what the wotld could be like, if we would have video calls and videoconferencing, as commonplace, as telephony has been. Here in Australia, members of the federal parliament, fly thousands of kilometres, to sit in the parliament (when they can be bothered turning up for "work" - the federal parliament is apparently scheduled to meet, for only ten days, in the next eight months, while its members hibernate (and, hide from each other) ), and, whilst the Australian federal partliament does not want to progress from the stone age, if its members used virtual attendance, through videoconferencing, it could save the country a fortune, and, show that Australia is not really such a stupid and backward country, that it appears to be (we have a federal government, that is obsessed with burning as much cpoall as possible, as it is worried about the increasing chill in the air). So, while MS is doing as much as it can, to obstruct communications, with its progressive hobbling of skype, if Ekiga could be turned into a community project, and, thence, continue to be developed and maintained, instead of being abandoned, like so much other Linux software, we could have hope, that communications technology will continue to advance, instead of being abandoned and left in unusable pieces on the side of the road.. So, rather than simply abandoning Ekiga, I ask whether it could be offered as a community project, so as to provide for its continued development, maintenance, and, support, rather than simply abandoning it. -- Bret Busby Armadale West Australia .. Re: [Ekiga-list] Unable to make outbound calls via Metaswitch
Hi Sean, Thank you for your analysis. Unfortunately, the only way to change this behaviour is to modify the source code of opal, which is used by ekiga and takes care of SIP. Perhaps this bug has been fixed in opal since Ekiga was released, but currently there is no one working on Ekiga. Since no dialog is established, no tag is present. After Metaswitch answers with the '401 Unauthorized', it deletes the reference to that TO tag and when Ekiga reuses it, Metaswitch can't match it to any current session. I've captured packets using Linphone and it behaves in the way our Metaswitch is expecting, to not include a TO tag when sending the second INVITE that includes authentication. Is there a way Ekiga's behavior can be changed locally via configuration file to either: 1. Not include the TO tag on the second INVITE 2. Include Authentication on the initial INVITE Is/could this be a feature request that I need to submit vs. a bug? Thanks. -Sean ___ ekiga-list mailing list ekiga-list@gnome.org https://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/ekiga-list
