Re: [Ekiga-list] Announcement: this mailing list will be retired by the end of Oct 2022

2022-10-26 Thread Andrea Veri
Hi,

I’ve received several questions during the past days which possibly makes
sense to summarize in a single topic [1] which I can then reference.
Hopefully this specific post will help anyone looking for the same set of
answers as well. If any additional common question arises I’ll make sure to
add it to this same topic in Discourse.

Thanks and please let us know if you have any questions around Discourse or
your onboarding process!

[Ekiga-list] Announcement: this mailing list will be retired by the end of Oct 2022

2022-10-20 Thread Andrea Veri
Hi,

As we have been communicating during the past few months GNOME's Mailman
platform is being decommissioned (python2 deprecation, major burden in
managing lists spam). The deadline is currently set to the end of October
2022. Mailing list subscribers are invited to migrate to GNOME's Discourse
instance [1]. Neil made sure [2] to create a set of tags you can re-use to
initiate a new topic in the new platform, if a tag is missing please reach
out to me directly.

Jehan (from the GIMP Team) kindly provided some instructions you can follow
[3] in order to safely migrate your reading workflow to Discourse. The new
platform supports several login methods including your GNOME Account and
other major OpenID providers.

After the deadline of the end of October Mailman archives will remain alive
in read only mode for posterity. If the mailing list was used behind an
alias, please let me know so we can re-do the same setup but on Discourse
instead.

Thanks,

P.S All the l10n lists are still pending code changes in damned-lies, the
deadline to decommission those lists may slip by a week or two depending
how soon those changes will be made available in DL codebase

Re: [Ekiga-list] PTLib compile failure on Raspberry Pi 4 and Banana? Pi M64

2022-04-09 Thread Robert Heller via ekiga-list
At this point I have given up on Ekiga and found linphone, which actually has
a version on the standard repos for both the Raspberry and Banana Pis.
linphone *looks* like what I am looking for -- I want to build a VOIP phone
based on a Raspberry Pi or Banana Pi. But thanks anyway...

Hi Robert,

I'm maintaining a fork of PTLib for GnuGk and H323Plus at
https://github.com/willamowius/ptlib

That version was forked off PTLib 2.10.9 and probably doesn't match
exactly what Ekiga needs, but you might be able to use some of the
fixes I made for current compiler and OS versions from the revision
history.

Jan

It would depend on whether your Teams administrator has enabled a SIP
gateway, I expect.

That said, I don't think Ekiga is actively maintained any longer. Per
wikipedia, the last stable release was in 2013.

2021-03-17 Thread Ka Exn via ekiga-list
Hi Folks.
New to this "list", is it like a "Forum"?
I do have a question, can' t find answer.
If I use the Ekiga in my Liunx computer, can I have video-meeting with people
using the Ms Teams program?
Thank You.

Not so familier to all those 3 letters things like VoIP and other, protocols
and all stuff, just want to click  and get contact to see the others on the
video-meeting-conference.
Thanks._______

The very latest Windows build is the one one which ends in +
http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/gnome/binaries/win32/ekiga/4.0/

I'm using it for h323 calls and is working fine (on Windows 10).

The file sippdu.cxx is part of the OPAL libray
https://sourceforge.net/projects/opalvoip/

The Windows package which ends in + uses a "beta12" of the libopal.3.10 and
libpt.2.10 compiled .dll.

[Ekiga-list] Ekiga 4.0.1 - Assertion fail: Transaction created on connection pending deletion.

2020-12-03 Thread Jop Huttenhuis via ekiga-list
 Hi there,

I downloaded (installer) and installed Ekiga 4.0.1 on Windows 10 from here:
URL:
http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/gnome/binaries/win32/ekiga/4.0/ekiga-setup-4.0.1.exe

Installation and setup went fine.
When calling an extension, ekiga throws a dialog:
Assertion fail: Transaction created on connection pending deletion. file
/home/ededu/softs/ekiga/windows-4.0.1/opal-3.10.10/src/sip/sippdu.cxx, line
2681
...
...

I downloaded the source code "ekiga-4.0.1.tar.xz" and searched for file
"sippdu.cxx".
Unfortunately I could't find it.

Is this problem known for this version?

>From "
https://download.gnome.org/sources/ekiga/4.0/ekiga-4.0.1.tar.xz.mirrorlist";
I found the source code is from year 2013.
Is there any later source-code?

With kind regards,

Jop

Ekiga is no longer maintained as was announced on this list a long time
ago.

I have used both ekiga and linphone with several sip registrars, and
both worked. Linphone still does. I haven't tried ekiga for a long time:
unless you are going to take over maintenance, I would forget it.

Has anybody had the opportunity to check the interoperability of Ekiga and

[Ekiga-list] Auto-reconnect at SIP account ?

2020-06-03 Thread Vincèn PUJOL via ekiga-list
Hi

Having an instable Internet connection from time to time, I'd like Ekiga to
automatically reconnect/try to reconnect at SIP account setup in it. Right now
if connection goes down, Ekiga disconnects and done and then you stay offline
for hours and missing calls without knowing it :(
I checked the FAQ and also in Ekiga but found nothing to setup for that !

Re: [Ekiga-list] ekiga-list Digest, Vol 150, Issue 1

2020-06-02 Thread Kenyon Karl via ekiga-list
Note that the Ekiga software is immediately available to all Ubuntu Linux
users (including Kubuntu and the like) in the normal Ubuntu software
directory. I have installed it in my Kubuntu 18.04.4 LTS system. I have
tried to register the following SIP address at ekiga.net but I am not at
all assured that the server is functional. I also have Linphone installed
on a Windows 10 system and have likewise registered that address at
sip.linphone.org. However due to a complete lack of opportunity I have not
been able to test either software set. Note that I also have an older
laptop that is currently running Kubuntu 20.04, but I haven't even checked
if I can install Ekiga on it.

Since both Ekiga and Linphone claim to use the SIP protocol, then by just
switching the registration, users OUGHT to be able to use the ekiga.net
-or- sip.linphone.org server with either or both software installations.
Also worth exploring is whether sipbroker.com is still functional and can
be used for calls between these SIP servers. Last but not least Ekiga
claims also to use the H.323 protocol, which I haven't heard mentioned
since Microsoft Netmeeting
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_NetMeeting> disappeared from view
in 2007.

Due to a lack of opportunity for use, I don't normally run either the Ekiga
or Linphone software, thus if I were to add the following back into my
contact information block, it would be added to the 'advance arrangement
only' section! Also note that I don't run my Windows 10 computers until I
have 'good reason' to do so!

I have no position to say Ekiga is unmaintained, but . . .

[Ekiga-list] ekiga distribution

2020-06-01 Thread Tamer Higazi via ekiga-list

Hi people,

I have asked myself if "ekiga" is still actively maintained.
I'd like to support you with packaging ekiga and distribute it on
flathub and build flatpack images to get ridd of building ekiga by hand.

flatpack:
https://flatpak.org/

about flatpack:
https://docs.flatpak.org/en/latest/

I have tested very long time ago ekiga, and built it on my linux
machine, still it gives me headache to build it.
So, if you support me building ekiga on Gentoo Linux, I would be happy
to make myself familiar making binaries for flathub, so that ekiga is
easily distributed for all Linux Architectures, and that nobody has to
build by hand anymore ekiga through sourcecode.

best, Tamer

[Ekiga-list] Suggested hardware?

2020-05-05 Thread dboland9 via ekiga-list
I have installed Ekiga and started reading the docs. I was wondering if there
are suggested headsets, cameras, microphones, etc. and other non-computing
hardware? Items that are known to work well on a Linux computer? Over the
next month I want to get a system fully setup for telephone use, video calls,
and video conferences.

My understanding is that some of the features require a PBX, but I don't think
that is installed by default. Am I correct on this?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Not sure if this is any help, but maybe also try Retroshare
  https://retroshare.cc/

I have wanted to use Ekiga for years, even way back when it was some other
name I can't remember at the moment. Unfortunately I have few friends who care
about computer use or anything they use on them (they're all the kind who
could care less, just so it works, and of course they're all M$ users too), so
I never was able to install and use Ekiga, though I sure wish I could.
Presently, if there's any cost whatsoever involved, I'm unable to use it as
I've fallen on hard times and barely able to keep a roof over my head much
less spend a few dollars on something for software use.

Hopefully though that Retroshare thing may help. Let us know if you do at
least try it...though I suppose it'd be a bit rude here on the Ekiga list (my
  apologies to the Ekiga owners/makers!).

Skype also works by downloading executable code (codecs) from random

Hi Peter,

server side you have the GNU Gatekeeper (https://www.gnugk.org) that
uses H.323 and is still under active development.

Unfortunately nonw of the available OpenSource endpoints is really
production quality. See my list at

I think you best bet are the free (but not open) mobile H.323
endpoints, like RealPresence or Yealink VC (also on my list).

French researchers have access to a very easy to use videoconferencing
system, https://rendez-vous.renater.fr. You have access when they
invite you for a given videoconference. You just need a browser, no
need of plugins. I regularly use it and it works pretty well.

There seem to exist some H.323 libraries, such as H323Plus, but I

It is not a problem for me to use software that is no longer being

* I downloaded the sources. "configure" complained about a missing
Boost library, so I installed it with "apt install libboost-dev".

checking for boostlib >= 1.34... yes
checking whether the Boost::Signals library is available... yes
configure: error: Could not find a version of the library!

Since the previous two answers were "yes", I am not sure what is
missing on the last line, nor how to install it. I'm not sure what

Do you have some up-to-date installation instructions? I did check
the wiki at
"http://wiki.ekiga.org/index.php/Installing_Ekiga_on_Linux";, but it
hasn't been updated since 2013 (the Ubuntu instructions date to 2011).

Or if this project is dead, is there a replacement that you can

Hello.

I believe that you are better not trying to install Ekiga, especcially
as a new user.

No new development is being done, and, Ekiga is no longer fully
supported, insofar as I am aware.

Whilst some people have an ideological objection to it, because it is
now owned and operated by Microsoft, and, also, its functionality has
been progressively reduced, over the years, since Microsoft took it
over, I recommend trying Skype, which is available for Ubuntu Linux,
of which, I currently run UbuntuMATE 16.04 (as my preferred OS) and
18.04; both are LTS versions.

[Ekiga-list] Getting an account requires weakened security

2019-05-04 Thread Douglas Milnes via ekiga-list
I'm new to Ekiga. I am following the Ekiga Configuration Assistant to
set up an Ekiga.net Account (step 4 of 9). I am in the UK.

The link to 'Get an Ekiga.net SIP account' attempts to go to
https://ekiga.im/ to which I am unable to connect:

Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at ekiga.im.

Attempts to get to http://ekiga.im/ result in the same.

Attempts to get to http://ekiga.net/ result in the same.

Attempts to get to https://ekiga.net/ result in a message that the site
is configured incorrectly:

The owner of ekiga.net has configured their web site improperly. To
protect your information from being stolen, Firefox has not
   connected to this web site.

While over-riding the certificate failure might sometimes be considered
acceptable, that seems the wrong thing to do for communications

Is there a good way to sign up for an Ekiga account? Is there an update
to the software.

As a sysadmin for almost 30 years: this sounds like a network issue to
me. Something is introducing latency or packet loss on one end,
possibly a firewall?

Do you have network statistics for the connection or at least the

Hello.

My understanding is that Ekiga is shut down and dead (see the Monty
Python "Dead Parrot" sketch).

The only video calling software that I have, in the last several
years, been able to get working, has been skype, but, after Microsoft
took it over they did their Microsoft thing, and wrecked skype.

I am not aware of any other working video calling software, so I
suggest that you try skype, and find whether skype is still functional
as video calling software.

With IP6 clients (including Linphone), you have more peer to peer

The service has been shutdown. You can use another free SIP service
like linphone.org for example.

[Ekiga-list] Ekiga x Window doesn't make calls

2019-01-23 Thread Francesco via ekiga-list

I am using Ekiga 4.0.2 for MS Windows 10.

I was able to configure the softphone to receive calls, but not to make
calls.

When I try to call a PSTN number, a new window appears but nothing happens.

I tried the number with and without international prefix and also
disabling the firewall. I receive correctly the calls, I am able to
answer, but if I want to start a call, I am not able to do it.

In the same pc I have installed the softphone Zoiper, with the same
account, that works correctly.

Any suggestion?

[Ekiga-list] Raspberry Pi Autostart?

2019-01-22 Thread Richard Klein via ekiga-list
Hi,

I am trying to get Ekiga to autostart when my Raspberry Pi reboots.

I tried:
sudo nano /etc/xdg/lxsession/LXDE/autostart
@/usr/bin/ekiga

It seems to start the application but in a non-configured mode.

I am hoping to use Ekiga as a Sip client in auto answer mode as a speaker
for Asterisk.

Thanks for the help.

[Ekiga-list] Video seems to not be transmitted over h323 using H264

2019-01-21 Thread Antoine Merle via ekiga-list
Hello,

I am experiencing a problem similar to what is decribed in this older
thread:
black video sent from ekiga on linux mint
https://mail.gnome.org/archives/ekiga-list/2013-September/thread.html#00040

In short, on my work computer I have two different versions of Ubuntu
installed, with roughly the same setup. I am connecting using H323 to a
specific endpoint and I am getting different behavior.

On my older Ubuntu 16.04 distro, everything looks good, I (and others) can
see the image from my webcam. On my newer Ubuntu 18.04 (Kubuntu actually),
the image from my webcam seems to be completely black and this is confirmed
by other participants, note that I can see their image fine. On this newer
distro, the problem disappears if I deactivate h264 (and h263) and revert
to h261 (although the image is at quite lower resolution. If I just test
the webcam using the preview or try to see the local stream during a
meeting it works fine.

I tried debugging the ekiga sessions using '-d 4', I was only able to spot
some FFMPEG errors in the case of my newer distro ("FFMPEG non-existing
PPS 0 referenced" and then "FFMPEG decode_slice_header error").

Here are the 2 debugging outputs.

Ubuntu 16.04 Xenial: https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/HJF4Sfwq5y/
Ubuntu 18.04 Bionic: https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/MFkhmnGPk5/

Best regards,
Antoine Merle.

Re: [Ekiga-list] Call disconnecting from conference room after ~30 seconds

2019-01-02 Thread Sam Partington
Hi again,

I wouldn't worry about this one after all.

It turns out that this problem affects all calls, not just conference room
(it just so happened all my calls were brief!) However, I imagine it's the
issue described here (
http://wiki.ekiga.org/index.php/Enable_port_forwarding_manually). Since I
only started getting the error about this after using Ekiga for a little
while, I assumed it was a red-herring since I'd already set up my SIP
account network settings. On reflection, this is something different
(general settings, not account settings), though, so it probably is this.
I can't do port forwarding as I'm on a network with others and so would be
monopolising those ports, so I'm going to look into different VOIP software.

Thought I should post an update in case others hit this issue (and to
prevent anyone feeling the need to trawl through the log file!) All the
best,
Sam

[Ekiga-list] Call disconnecting from conference room after ~30 seconds

2018-12-17 Thread Sam Partington
Hi there,

(I understand from http://wiki.ekiga.org/index.php/Debugging_Ekiga thatthis
is the place to send requests for debugging help.)

I've been using Ekiga for SIP and it works fine when calling ordinary
numbers. However, we have a work conference room (from Gradwell), and when
I call that, I am prompted for a PIN (which I enter), I can join the
conference and hear and be heard, but after about 30 seconds of discussion,
my connection to the call disconnects and I leave the conference room.

I've recorded the debug logs here (
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1H0ADLREyf7je6trgWLzPXdXzsflhgqLp), and am
wondering it anyone can help me work out what's going on?

Many thanks

2018-12-01 Thread Damien Sandras
Hi Bret,
Thank you for your email and support.
You are absolutely right...
Actually, Ekiga, the software, is not discontinued. Ekiga.net, the SIP
platform that goes with it, will be shutting down by the end of the
year.
However, actually, the state of the software is not better. I have
actively maintained ekiga during more or less 12 to 13 years. A new
version is nearly ready (without instant messaging support anymore, and
without STUN/NAT support). A few years ago, I asked for help to finish
it. It was a call to developers, but nobody answered.
Having to maintain the software, the SIP platform, the websites, the
manuals, the documentation for that new release alone is simply not
possible. It would be if I was unemployed. But in that case, the "free"
as "free beer" aspect of Open Source would be annoying for me :-)
So well, if developers want to keep working on the Ekiga software, they
are welcome. The code is in GNOME's git, available for everyone!

Ekiga.net is not needed for peer to peer calls. It is only to help
out unfortunate souls still in IP4 NAT jail because they haven't learned
how to join the IP6 world. ISPs will never offer IP6. You have to
peer with friends and/or sign up with a general tunnel broker like
he.net.

There are other sites offering free IP4 SIP call brokering (generally
charging for POTS connections to make their money).

I moved to Linphone (another open source SIP client) because it
supported IPv6. Peer to peer SIP really requires IPv6.

The Cjdns IPv6 mesh VPN allows authenticated, encrypted peer to peer calls
anywhere in the world without any exchange of certs, etc, and a device

keeps its IP as it moves around. The IPv6 is a hash of the public key
of the node.

Even without a VPN, IPv6 allows direct peer to peer without needing
a public IP4 or a centralized site to help with all the NAT workarounds.

Ekiga does a number of things better than linphone (e.g. addressbook).
But the lack of IPv6 was a deal killer. There were efforts to
add IPv6 support to ekiga, but never finished that I was aware of.
Actually, IPv6 support in Linphone is a pain - it can't listen on
IP4 (for commercial SIP to POTS services) and IP6 simultaneously.
You have to switch back and forth in preferences. Ekiga could do it so
much better.

Hello.

I am wondering whether, given that Ekiga is said to be open source,
rather than, as its owner, simply shutting it down, it would not be
more appropriate and consistent with the (perceived) nature of open
source,, to seek a new group of people, to take it on, for the sake of
its continuance.

More and more good Linux software, has been abandoned/discontinued,
and, with MS apparently determined to progressively eliminate skype
(MS has been p[rogressively hobbling skype, since MS bought it out), a
developing technology in IT - the means od making video calls, amongst
other uses, is being eliminated. It is a bit like, if Alexander Bell
had decided that he had had enough of trying to develop telephony, and
said "Stuff it - I've had enough - I am going to put it all into boxes
and bury it.", rather than passing it on to others to continue the
development.

Imagine what the world would be like, if we had not had telephony.
Imagine what the wotld could be like, if we would have video calls and
videoconferencing, as commonplace, as telephony has been.

Here in Australia, members of the federal parliament, fly thousands of
kilometres, to sit in the parliament (when they can be bothered
turning up for "work" - the federal parliament is apparently scheduled
to meet, for only ten days, in the next eight months, while its
members hibernate (and, hide from each other) ), and, whilst the
Australian federal partliament does not want to progress from the
stone age, if its members used virtual attendance, through
videoconferencing, it could save the country a fortune, and, show that
Australia is not really such a stupid and backward country, that it
appears to be (we have a federal government, that is obsessed with
burning as much cpoall as possible, as it is worried about the
increasing chill in the air).

So, while MS is doing as much as it can, to obstruct communications,
with its progressive hobbling of skype, if Ekiga could be turned into
a community project, and, thence, continue to be developed and
maintained, instead of being abandoned, like so much other Linux
software, we could have hope, that communications technology will
continue to advance, instead of being abandoned and left in unusable
pieces on the side of the road..

So, rather than simply abandoning Ekiga, I ask whether it could be
offered as a community project, so as to provide for its continued
development, maintenance, and, support, rather than simply abandoning
it.

To add insult to injury, I cannot remove the ekiga launch icon from my toolbar. I have not found any linux softphone program that actually works but this has been the most problematic.

Re: [Ekiga-list] Unable to make outbound calls via Metaswitch

2018-10-12 Thread Eugen Dedu

Hi Sean,

Thank you for your analysis.

Unfortunately, the only way to change this behaviour is to modify the
source code of opal, which is used by ekiga and takes care of SIP.

Perhaps this bug has been fixed in opal since Ekiga was released, but
currently there is no one working on Ekiga.

Best regards,
Eugen

I've captured packets using Linphone and it behaves in the way our
Metaswitch is expecting, to not include a TO tag when sending the second
INVITE that includes authentication.

Is there a way Ekiga's behavior can be changed locally via configuration
file to either:

1. Not include the TO tag on the second INVITE
2. Include Authentication on the initial INVITE

Is/could this be a feature request that I need to submit vs. a bug?

Thanks.
