Hi Yannick,

I can open it to everyone again. What do people think?

It is ok if we backup...

I agree with you; this would be much easier to allow people directly
edit the wiki, but as i told you the wiki was like this before and was
hacked, which really was annoying to the person in charge of it (Damien
Sandras) as he has *lots* of other things to do (coding, administrating
ekiga.net, etc.). Since then, editing the wiki has been restricted to a
circle of few trusted people using passwords. See below... IMHO, having
it hosted elsewhere, isn't really a solution as the problem is *who*
will be in charge of it. Who will dedicated his time to this task
assuming the person is a wiki master who can deal with
"sabotage"/hacks ? I'm not that kind of people... In the other hand, the
Ekiga team see now the wiki system as a very good way to document Ekiga.
It seems, we will use it more and more...

administrator, granted me access to the wiki giving me a password and i
started working on it.

If you want to directly edit the wiki, ask Damien. I can't give you
access to it.

Perhaps, we should open a new page in the wiki providing infos how to
grant access to edit the wiki for people willing to help on it...

Hi Yannick,

Thanks for explaining why text and video have problems. Your
explanations make sense.

As for the wiki, perhaps it would be best to host it on another site
that would allow community involvement on editing? There are free wiki
services out there, but we could also try talking to gnome, ubuntu and
redhat to see if they would host it. I think this would really make
generating documentation much easier and allow developers to spend more
time on developing. I personally would contribute to a wiki, but it is
really hard to email wiki changes unless they constitute entire new
pages.

Another approach would be to allow editing from a very controlled group
of people - there is a way to have mediawiki email passwords just to
those you want (i.e., we could make people request accounts via email
and only after they are well known) and you can set up the wiki so that
it only operates over SSL for password protection. Just a thought

Hi,

I've updated the page :
http://wiki.ekiga.org/index.php/Wich_programs_work_with_Ekiga_%3F

I still need this to be tested... Please report success.

Changes :
- Found windows messenger and linphone can have text messages with
Ekiga.
- Added XMeeting on Mac OS (audio + video with EKiga as this software
rely on the same libraries).
- Added Ekiga win32. Added a new colomn "Presence" (but no infos right
now).
- Ordered the list : the most green a software have the more it is on
top.
- Aesthetic : better green (more readable).

I wish i could do that, but the "boss" there don't allow any people to
use the wiki, as the wiki was hacked and the very few people
administrating (maybe only 1 person : Damien) have other things todo

Well... Most of the informations was collected using google based on my

5.1.0701.

You're right. But Ekiga for windows is still in beta, and heavy work are
currently done on building it. I'll wait a bit for that.

I've plan to add a "presence" column, as Damien is working on it
currently.

About text, my guess is other program implement other protocol (mostly
jabber, which is a wish of the team) or implement variation (extended)
of the one used in Ekiga (SIP SIMPLE). I don't know the current status
of it right now. I need reports about it.

About video, the issue is codecs. Ekiga is a very old timer in VoIP
(more than 5 years) and was in first place realased with the H261 codec
which refer to one of the first codec available for VoIP. Since then new
(better) codecs has appear and most of the current software use H263
codec only (almost like XVID or DIVX), or use the very new (and heavy
CPU) H264. Beside that, the Ekiga design is under heavy change to add
plugin for video codecs wich will greatly improve the choice of video
codecs in Ekiga adding H263 (and in my best dreams H264 via the x264
codec). Fact is only products from Microsoft have support for H261...

About interoperability between other software, I know no one which can
test this, nor can maintain a wiki page about it...

Re: [Ekiga-list] need documentation of how to get Ekiga working with other programs

2006-10-29 Thread David M. Kaplan
Hi,

Yannick - the page you set up is a great start to the documentation. A
few suggestions: (1) I would add a "setup instructions" or "discussion"
column with some empty links already in place so that people who have
used Ekiga with that program can add a page with instructions on how to
set things up; (2) You might also add a column that indicates the
versions of Ekiga and the other program that were tested (or perhaps
that belongs in the setup instructions pages); and (3) you might want to
add "Ekiga for windows" to the "Using Windows" table - I naively thought
that everything would work fine with the connection from Ekiga-linux to
Ekiga-windows, but I could only get audio working, nothing else.

The obvious thing that one notes from the table is that audio almost
always works, but text and video almost never work. Naively, I would
think that text and video would be no more difficult than audio if SIP
is used. Why is this not the case? Do other programs have the same
difficulties (e.g., does video from Gizmo to X-lite work?)? Is there
any way to find out why video doesn't work?

Thanks again.

Cheers,
David

Nice french words. Just one small mistake : Je ne peux pas. Thx you :)

Ok, send it to me. It would probably go at least to wiki.ekiga (in a
general fashion), in unbuntu documentation (english and french in a
step-by step fashion, as i can test it and i will install edgy on dual
boot for that purpose having it for dapper and edgy). Debian is very
close. If someone wants to help on his own distro, feel free to mail
here :). The important point is to have installed it and having it
running some tests. I will provide a way on the wiki pages to send us
feedback using IRC or this mailling list. By the way, translation is
also wanted.

Well, IMHO that's true. I'm working on it, thinking having step-by-step
documentation is good for distro. This way, i've done some work for
Ubuntu documentation installing/configuring Ekiga, both english and
french version. But, considering your request, it seems to me some
topics are of general value, i.e. interoperability with other software
on different platforms, how to set up Ekiga with SIP providers, how to
subscribe ekiga.net...

Problem with wiki is how to avoid attacks against it. Right now, only
few trusted people have access to it.

Another issue is how to stay up-to-date and be exhaustive regarding
interoperability of Ekiga with other SIP/H323 implementation ? But this
is part of the frequently asked questions when you talk with Ekiga
users. On the purpose of saving time for all people involving in Ekiga,
i've started a new wiki page about this topic :
http://wiki.ekiga.org/index.php/Wich_programs_work_with_Ekiga_%3F

I'm not sure title is right, i'm not even sure I should open this
page... Fact is when people succed using Ekiga with another
software/harware they mostly do not inform us about it, and they do not
provide us a step-by-step how to setup the other software. I know much
more about issues than succes...

Feel free to comment.

[Ekiga-list] need documentation of how to get Ekiga working with other programs

2006-10-27 Thread David M. Kaplan
Hi,

I have recently become very frustrated trying to get Ekiga video
conferencing to work with family that only use windows. I have tried to
use Ekiga (in linux) with Windows Messenger, X-ten and Ekiga for windows
- in all cases, I ran into problems or could get sound but no video.
What struck me was the lack of adequate documentation of exactly how to
get things working. Perhaps I am looking in the wrong place, but it
seems that there is relatively little detailed documentation out there.

It seems to me that there needs to be an Ekiga Wiki where people can put
their experiences online. A table that says what aspects of what
programs work with ekiga linked to instructions on how to setup both
sides of the connection would be very useful. Another useful topic
would be instructions on how to test both ends of the line. Some hints
of this are in the FAQ, but it wasn't sufficient for me.

If there is anyway I can help setting something like this up, I would be
willing to try. I have experience setting up MediaWiki, but wouldn't
consider myself an expert.

Cheers,
David
