[Elecraft] Transverters

2004-07-06 Thread Paul
Reflector Members,

Those of you using Elecraft TransvertersAre all of you using an A/B
type switch to go from HF to VHF on the K2' transverter hookup?

I was a little surprised to see that to get the Drive RF to the transverters
required the use of an external or separate switch that would require the
individual to switch from the HF antenna to the transverters with an external
switch.

Is there any way to use those lower drive RCA connectors to eliminate the
switch?

Second question - my 144 transverter is about 100 cycles high. Is there a way
to correct this?

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft K2 #4355 is just about finished.

2004-07-06 Thread Don Brown
Hi

It really does not matter with one exception The KPA100 and 60M option require
removal of the heat sink on the K2. This is not something you want to do many
times because of the possibility of damage to the thermal pads or loss of the
hardware stack on the output transistors. I would suggest removing the bottom
cover and heat sink once and installing all of the connectors for the KPA100,
SSB and the 60M at the same time then you can install the modules when ever you
want without requiring the removal of the heat sink. I always install all of
the connectors for the KPA100 60M SSB and noise blanker when building a K2 so
it is ready for any option with a minimum of disassembly. The connectors come
in the option kits so you can fish them out of the packages and install them at
the same time you are building the RF board if you already have the options. If
you do not have the options yet you can order the connector kit from Elecraft
for a few dollars and install them so you are ready for any of the options. If
you are going to order the connectors separately then don't forget to order the
standoffs and hardware also or you may need to disassemble the heat sink to
install the hardware.

I'm still trying to decide in which order to build the SSB and the
  KPA100. I figure I should do the KPA100 first, because 15W isn't much on
SSB, but then I also figure I could build the SSB first and use it for
PSK31... I'll probably end up doing the SSB first just because it'll
  take less time.

RE: [Elecraft] Transverters

2004-07-06 Thread Simon Lewis

Paul,

I would never recommend such a device if your a serious VHFr

They leak and will pick up alot of external signals that are not on VHF!

I think a famous DX record in the UK was claimed by two 28 MHz drivers and
leaky connections in the 70s!

I would only recommend good solid cables and connectors and no switch if
your wanting your system to remain at the best performance. The A/B type
switches are generally not good and will leak signal across the switch
ports.

You can use the offset command in the K2 menu to trim the transverter onto
an accurate external signal - as long as your really sure that your are
100Hz off!!! dont rely on the local beacon ;-)

Re: [Elecraft] Transverters

2004-07-06 Thread Don Brown
HI

Yes if you install the KX60M option then the switching is not required on the
antenna because the K2 RF is not required to drive the transverter. The drive
comes from the low level output on the KX60M not the K2 finals. The K2 output
circuit is turned off when the transverter is selected on the band switch and
low level drive is selected in the menu.

The XV144/222 does not have a frequency adjustment for the local oscillator
(although the XV50 does) There is an offset adjustment in the K2 transverter
menu to compensate for slight frequency variations. This will allow you to
adjust the K2 dial indicator to the correct frequency for your transverter.
Each of the six transverter menu selections have their own offset setting.

2004-07-06 Thread Eric Swartz WA6HHQ - Elecraft

Hi Paul,

We also offer the K60XV internal transverter interface option for the K2. It
has a separate low level output for the driving transverters and automatically
switches to that output from the K2's HF output when you select a transverter
band.

To correct for the 100 Hz offset go into the K2's transverter menu area. There
is a +/- offset setting that will compensate for this.

[Elecraft] WA3WSJ on AT

2004-07-06 Thread Edward R. Breneiser
Hello all,

Yesterday, 7/5, I took my hiking buddy Trevor, my dog, with me and we
hiked the AT.
No radios, just a conditioning hike for the both of us. We've been
walking 5 miles every other day at home, but I wanted to get back up in
the mountains! This hike starts at the Hamburg, PA Parking Lot and goes
straight up 2 miles to Pulpit Rock to an elevation of 1580 feet. Not to
high, but it's straight up hill ALL the way! I made it to Pulpit Rock in
one hour - used to take me 45 minutes. I didn't feel bad at all on top
of the mountain, but I guess the back injury slowed me down- hi!

Once on top, the view was as I remembered it - just beautiful! Trevor
drank his usual 1L of water! I love hiking with Trevor, but he drinks
like a fish. After I took off my shirt and hat and dried them out in the
sun, it was back down the mountain.

Don't forget to work me this Thursday and Friday on my 2-Day AT Trip.
Trevor and myself will hike 8.5 miles starting at Port Clinton, PA to
Eagles Nest Shelter on Thursday. After I set up camp and we eat dinner,
I will play radio 40m/20m. On Friday we will eat breakfast and I will
then play radio until lunch.

2004-07-06 Thread Gregg Lengling
Just a little over a year ago I took a trip to England and Ireland for 3
weeks. Had the K2 in my checked luggage, and 2 HT's and a Digital SLR in my
carry-on's. No questions or problems with the radios, however they had to
tear my carry-on apart to look at the camera. It appears that the lenses I
had with me are what set the inspectors off. It seems they look suspect in
the X-Ray machine as they show up like metal tubes, I guess they must look
like pipe bombs or something. Anyhow now that I'm used to this I carry all
my camera gear in a Camera bag so it's all by itself. They still open it
but it takes much less time. Also remember they limit the number of
batteries (actually they don't want any loose batteries on your carry-on's),
so I put all my spare NiMh's and chargers in my checked luggage.

It's a small price to pay for the security, I don't mind it.

By the way the most thorough checks were done at the Airport in New
JerseyChicago's O'Hare and London's Heathrow weren't bad at all...very
quick and smooth all the way..including immigration ect.

Re: [Elecraft] Re: KX1 and airport security

2004-07-06 Thread Rick Hampton
Hi, guys.

I took my KX1 to Ft. Myers, FL in February. Had nary a problem. The
KX1 with lithium AA cells, wire antenna, counterpoise, and all
accessories were
in a Pelican case with a clear top. My laptop and shoes got swabbed
for traces of explosives, but the radios (I also had my W32A with me)
were
cleared with little or no concern.

The same was NOT true when I went to park my car in an underground
garage at a large banking institutions sky scraper here in Boston while
with my
family. In spite of the three backpacks in the back of my station
wagon, the guard froze when he saw the KX1 it it's case. He got REALLY
excited and
began pointing at it, yelling, WHUT ISS DAT?, over and over as he
backed away from the car. My 14 year-old son got out of the car to see
what he
was upset over and when he tried to pick it up and show the guard it was
only a radio, the guard got even MORE excited, screaming NO!!! LEAVE IT
'LONE!!!. About 5 minutes later, after finally getting him calmed
down, he finally, and hurriedly, motioned us on through the checkpoint.
Thank
goodness he didn't have a firearm with him. He probably would have
drawn it from it's holster.

After all that, he never did look at any of the backpacks, only the
KX1. I guess the packages don't matter unless they LOOK like a bomb.
One thing
is for sure, if I DO have to go into Boston during the last week of July
when the DNC is in town, I'll leave the KX1 behind. I may be crazy, but
I'm
not stupid!

Wayne, maybe you should stencil every KX1 with the notice, This is NOT
a BOMB! ;-)

I am amazed that I have seldom been questioned about my carry-on

[Elecraft] Thank You for doing it right!

2004-07-06 Thread Larry Kayser

Greetings all the staff at Elecraft!

This memo is to Christine (who did it right three times), to Evelyn (who
did it right twice) and to Somerlan who only had a chance to do it once.

Thank You from KX1 # 618 for putting all the little things in the right
bag and envelope. Thank You for putting in each bag the right number of
things, and Thank You for not putting in more little things than there
should be (and leaving me to find out what to do with the extra
things). Thank You for getting it right.

I do not think that Elecraft had in mind that someone should Thank You
for doing it right, when they put your names in each bag of things, so I
can imagine that if you managed to make a mistake now and then someone
might take exception to the situation - but in my case you got it right
and I am well pleased.

I hope each of you are having a good day and that you will continue to
have success with your efforts and labours.

The designer did a pretty good job as well, but that was known ahead of
time, only Christine, Evelyn and Somerlan had a chance to reduce my
expectations and you avoided that and for that I am very appreciative of
your efforts.

[Elecraft] Transverters

2004-07-06 Thread Paul
Reflector Members and specifically:

Simon Lewis
Don Brown
Eric Swartz

Thank you for the help on the transverters. This evening I removed the AB
switch and made up connectors with RCA's coming off of the 60 meter module
option and BNC on the other end for the Transverters. but now I have a
problem with incoming audio. Yesterday, using the AB switch, the incoming
signal volume worked fine and now there is hardly and audible signal and no
reading or just barely an S1 bar on incoming signals.

So maybe I jumpered something wrong or I used the wrong connection diagram or
maybe I did not properly tune the 60 meter upgrade module when I put it in.

Can any of you offer some insight into where I might start my troubleshooting
on this

FYI :

I am using the diagram on page 66 of the transverter manual and I used the
jumper setting for -20 dBm(.01) to 0 dBm(1 mW) which is listed as the following
connections:

JP1: 1-2
JP2: 2-3
JP3: 1-2
JP4: 1-2
JP5: 2-3
JP6 2-3

This XV144 is deaf as can be now.. and it was not with the High RF output and
an AB switch. So I have missed something somewhere! XV 50 is low audio too.

By the way - How do you get those BNC T-connectors to fit back there. I had
to use them in the vertical positon and then set the transverters on a book so
they did not bend the wires coming out of the bottom of the T-connector when
hooked up to the transverters. Are you using a special BNC designed T
connector that fits back there?

Thanks

Re: [Elecraft] KX1 and airport security

2004-07-06 Thread Bob Nielsen
I took my K2 to London in May in a carry-on bag. On the departure,
after running it through the X-Ray machine, they took the bag and ran it
by some sort of scanner without opening it. No problem and it attracted
zero attention on the return flight as well as when boarding the
Eurostar train for a trip to France through the chunnel. My
accessories and MP-1 vertical were in checked luggage which apparently
was not opened.

[Elecraft] Software Guy

2004-07-06 Thread Robert McGwier
After I finished installing and playing around with the DSP unit, I
remembered
why I am a software guy. It took an hour to build, test, and close out the
DSP unit.

NO TOROIDS ;-).

Yo Lyle! Nice job. Can't wait to see what I can shoe horn into the module.
Is there
a means of programming it in situ or tell me what I need to be able to blow
my
own code into the beastie. See you next week.

2004-07-06 Thread Robert McGwier
I lost the main drive (160 GB Maxtor) on my Windows
Computer, Windows XP Pro, NTFS. I am looking for recommendations
for a recovery service that will charge me way UNDER $1000 and
do the job right. Please email me directly off list.
