[Elecraft] KX1 RX Sensitivity on 20M vs 30M, 40M

2004-08-24 Thread Klaus Koppendorfer
i did a lot of measurements due to low sensitivity on 20meter with
trackinggenerator and spectrumanalyser the real max peak of the 20meter
bandpass filter is at lower frequency (abt 13 MHz) if you align the
filter for max gain on 14 Mhz the peak ist abt 6db lower as on 13MHz i
did some changes at filter caps but there is a strong influence with
the other two filters (40, 30 meter) maybee elecraft has there a new
redesign with new filter values - just see with analyser the filter
curves..

[Elecraft] 40m ECN this past Sunday.

2004-08-24 Thread Geoffrey Mackenzie-Kennedy
Hello everybody,

Kevin, KD5ONS , posted a note saying that I had copied K1EV during the 0200Z
40m ECN last Sunday / Monday. Yes I had under S9 PIGGISH propagation
conditions - also W4STK. What Kevin did NOT say , as I think that he is too
modest , was that he too was making it over here again - although he was
gurgling a bit due to the aurora. And these three gentlemen were about the
only stateside people heard here on our CW portion of the band around 0200Z
(3 am local) that morning. K2 Magic.

[Elecraft] fishing rod blanks

2004-08-24 Thread wa2dkg
Most fishing tackle stores sell fishing rod blanks for those who build
their own rods...Long blanks can be a challenge to transport...Fishing
rod ferrules in a wide variety of sizes, and ferrule cement can be bought
at these tackle stores and the blank can be cut and ferruled...They also
sell surf fisherman's sand spikes which is nothing more than a tube with
a point on it that can be pushed down into the sand...The fishing rod is
then inserted into the tube..Cabella used to sell fishing rod blanks and
rod building supplies...I don't know if they still do...

RE: [Elecraft] fishing rod blanks

2004-08-24 Thread Gil Stacy

Take a look at the Moxon Antenna page for sources of cheap rods.
http://campus.murraystate.edu/org/msuarc/moxon/index.htm
While slightly more expensive, I bought a crappie (the fish, not the
adjective) pole from Cabelas for $10.00.

Sand spikes are easily made of PVC. Cut one end at 45 degrees. The other
end can be slightly flared by heating on a gas grill and forcing heated over
a wine bottle. A protruding stainless steel bolt placed at right angles to
the tube can be used as a foot rest to drive the spike in the ground.

Re: [Elecraft] Help figuring out missing part

2004-08-24 Thread Rich McCabe
So I am going to try to pick up a capacitor locally. I am confused by the
value.

If I understand it correctly, the manual says caps marked with two digits
are the value in pf. Three digits markings use the third as a mutliplier.

The manual says its either 27 or 271. In this case wouldnt 27 be 27pF
and 271 be 270pF?

Sorry for the ignorance !

Rich

Yes, I would think so too. I don't inventory parts but the one thing I do
is
take all caps and stick them in foam and get them all sorted. Guess at
that
point it would be easy to inventory at least the caps.

My first K2 had no missing parts. This one was missing an IC on the
control
board and one extra of another IC.

It is possible that the C198 got lost and I wont rule it out :) But, looks
like it is gone regardless. If it is nothing special, I will see if I can
find one locally. Have SSB, NB, DSP, 160 and 100 watt to build yet.

 Thanks for the response.

 Rich

That is a rare thing to have a part missing in a kit from Elecraft. I
 have
built twelve K2's and many many K2 options, three K1's and lots of
 options,
and three KX1's and have never had a part missing. I do an inventory of
 all
the parts on even the smallest of kits. I inventory them one bag of
parts
at a time and dump them into the lid of a shoebox. I sort them in
plastic
parts boxes and then they are handy when I need them. You might check
the
envelope that the capacitors came in and see if the 27pf might be in it
or
it might be mixed up with other caps that look like it. Look at your
270pf
capacitors. They mark them 270 for 27pf and 271 for 270pf. They look
 about
the same and it is real easy to confuse them and mix them up. Make sure
 you
have not install the one marked 270 in an place where a 271 should have
 been
  used.

[Elecraft] Off Topic Question

2004-08-24 Thread Lee Buller
Hi Everyone,

I am trying to repair an Autek WM-1 meter that was hit by lighting. The
lighting came through the ground return of the coax. It seemed to damage the
power supply to the board that does all the work. Nothing else seems damaged
except the soot and a few traces were burned off. I am going to repair the
traces with wire.

But, I need to find an LM7805 in the small wee package the comes with the K2s.
I have been to Mouse and all they have is the TO-220 at 1A. Don't need
that...just the small we packaged one.

Where do I go to find these parts?

Re: [Elecraft] Help figuring out missing part

2004-08-24 Thread G3VVT
Would think the marking for a 27pF capacitor of 271 in the K2 manual may be
an error when compared to the markings for similar values. For example: C43
on the RF board, 33pF is marked 330. The usual notation of this type of
capacitors is the first two digits are the first part of the value and the
last
digit is the number of zeros after this with a 0 (zero) meaning no added zero
at
the end and a 1 indicating an added zero.

However it seems that this rule can be broken when it suits the
manufacturer. This highlights the benefit of having a capacitance meter either
in a DVM
or a LCR meter being invaluable when such questions arise to be sure. As a
matter of personal policy I checked the value of all capacitors and resistors
before insertion when building my K2. Can save a lot of grief later.

There is a mistake on the parts list page of Appendix A, RF Section for
C198. You will notice that the caps above and below list 20 (or 200) and 33
(or 330) but somehow C198 is 27 (or 271) - WRONG! Should be 27 (or 270).

As I remember, when I built mine it was marked with a 27.

[Elecraft] K2 transmit rapid drift on 10 meters

2004-08-24 Thread Bill DeHaven
While tuning up my K2 filters with spectrogram and tuning the bandpass
filters, I decided to see how the transmitted CW sounded on my K2 Rev B
with keying mod, temperature compensated oscillator mod, and KAT1 tuner,
so I drug out my 75S-3B receiver to listen as I tuned up into my dummy
load. Everything sounded great on 80, 40, 20, and 15 meters, but on 10
meters, yuk.

Not only did the output sound low compared to what I was picking up on
15 meters for instance, but there was a very bad frequency drift on key
down that never seemed to stop. I was measuring power output using the
detector on the DL1 dummy load and it seemed to be putting out the
expected power.

I also borrowed an HP8640 signal generator from work to test the
receiver sensitivity, since my XG1 seems to be not generating the
correct levels. With the HP8640 I was able to test the receiver
sensitivity on all bands and found that the receiver is functioning very
well, even on 10 meters.

Any ideas on why the 10 meter transmit signal is so bad? I suspect that
17 meters may be bad also but don't have a receiver covering that band.

There is very little circuitry that is not common to both transmit and
receive, so, since the receiver is working properly, it seems like
perhaps there may be a parasitic oscillation in the transmitter output
stages. However, the ever handy test finger placed on all the circuitry
reachable from the top of the RF board made no change to the 10 meter
transmitted tone or drift. The bang the sides and top test had no effect
either.

Regards,

Bill DeHaven (ex N6ED, and I wish I hadn't let that one expire!)

Lee,

Mouser has them - the designation is '78L05' for the low power package and
'7805' for the 1 amp version. Similar numbering is used for the low
power/high power versions of most all the 78xx 3 terminal voltage

With that generalization out of the way, Mouser's part number is

Re: [Elecraft] K1 enthusiast wonders ??

2004-08-24 Thread Bert Craig
Hi Carl, ( everybody else)

I too love my K1. (#1337) It has a funny story behind it too. I had just
moved into my (Oops, our.) new QTH and to battle the needs of my newfound CW
addiction, (Thanks N2EY.) I decided to put a small portable SW rcvr on the
nightstand. A dedicated shack was still in the process of being built from
a converted closet that was itself converted from a crawl space beneath the
stairs. (Anybody laughing yet?)

Early one morning I heard HC1HLO from Santo Domingo, Ecuador...a town which
I'd visited just a year earlier. There I was with no xmit capability, very
frustrating, to say the least! So I decided to check out eBay for a quick
and dirty solution.

I grabbed a 4-band K1 with all the options for a steal, tossed up a 40m
doublet and viola, I was back OTA. I ran the feedline to my father's room
downstairs with the intention of eventually letting him use it for his
SWLing.

Well, it's been about six months and I'm more than halfway toward my WAS,
including a very nice contact with Curt, AH6RE on the heels of the Sunday
Elecraft 40m net. I bagged a 1,000 mi./Watt award for that. All on 5 Watts!
Now I want my WAS to be all QRP, I love it.

Yeah, I now have a K2/100 and a Ten-Tec Jupiter in the main shack, but
something always draws me to that K1 in dad's room. (The secondary shack,
hi.)

It seems the K1 has fallen off the radar screen here on the Elecraft

to be bouncing around in the field. Also it is significantly bigger when

The KX1 is definately a slick little rig. I have had the opportunity to
borrow a friends for a week, and although it definately is a great
travelling rig, the K1 outputs twice the power, has 4 bands rather than 3,
and seems better able to match whatever you can hook up to for an antenna. I
use a Paddelette paddle which mounts to the short K1 tilt stand. Darn near
as neat as the KX1 plug in paddle.

I have a complete station, the K1, a 10 cell AA battery pack, wire

Actually, the timing is very, very consistent from keyer to keyer. The
biggest difference is in choosing whether you want to use Mode A or Mode
B keying.

Some folks can switch from one mode to another easily, others have a
very hard time. So you might want to consider which mode you plan to
use.

There's a good discussion of the modes at:

I'm sure there are timing differences in all of them, but I'm about to
(finally, after 27 years of hamming) going to learn how to use paddle.
Maybe even the darn Bencher paddles my parents gave me for Christmas.
Christmas of 1979, I think.

I suppose I could carry the K2 and a small power supply around with me,
but I thought maybe just a small keyer would be easier for practice.

[Elecraft] KFL1-2 15m/30m and 20m/40m For Sale on eBay

2004-08-24 Thread Bill Flynn AIØC
Hi All,

These are both assembled, aligned and tested Elecraft KFL1-2 two band filter
boards for use with the Elecraft K1 QRP CW transceiver. One has been built
for 15m and 30m use and the other for 20m and 40m use.

Either can be easily modified for use on 80m, 40m, 30m, 20m, 15m or 17m by
simply replacing 13 or fewer capacitors, rewinding two toroids and replacing
one crystal. You can get the capacitors and crystals from Elecraft for a
reasonable cost.

I'm selling both of these boards on eBay for $30.00 Buy It Now! or you can
bid on them starting at $25.00 and take your chances that it won't go higher
than $30.00 in the end. Shipping is a flat $3.85 to anywhere in the USA.
Shipping insurance is optional and costs $1.30.

The eBay item numbers are 5716929374 for the 15m/30m board and 5716929575
for the 20m/40m board. Happy bidding!

My only HF rig is the K1 and it suits my needs well.

I'm lucky if I get a half hour a week for hamming and I'd prefer to spend
that time on the air, not in the rig. But eventually something will need
fixing or adjusting -- the output seems low; the frequency jumps 30 khz when
the knob gets bumped; the RIT mod still isn't working right -- and opening
the K1 doesn't seem so overwhelming. As much as I would love a K2 and a KX1,
their complexity intimidates me. Maybe it's just perception: That's
something I won't know till I find more money and time.

My K1 cost me half what the K2 would have when built to suit, and the KX1
wasn't available when I bought the rig. If I was shopping today, the K1's
price and 7-band capability would steer my decision straight to it.

I use a padded lunch bag or an amazingly well suited cardboard shipping box
for transport.

My 7Ah gel is great for home operation, but I'd rather have something
slimmer for the days I'm portable. Sometimes I take a pack of 8 AA
alkalines. I'm not sold on the KBT1. I desire solar.

[Elecraft] K-2 Audio problem

2004-08-24 Thread Maxwell Moon
Hello,
My K-2 audio sometimes fades completely away. It can happen whether I'm in RX or
TX mode. (Yes, the sidetone can fade to faint or no signal.)

Sometimes the audio comes back up almost to the original level, sometimes even
all the way back. But it fades again before too long. And it happens with an
external speaker or headphones, too.

This doesn't happen when I've just powered up. In fact, it's probably always
more than 15 or 20 minutes but I've never remembered to note the exact time.

If the audio stays weak, I can almost always recover it by turning the AF up
until the audio makes an odd sound, sort of like a bubble bursting. I may have
to rotate the knob to the 3 or 4 o'clock position, and sometimes I go all the
way it still doesn't come back. But after it's back, it stays that way for at
least a few minutes.

The serial number of my K-2 is 9xx (I'm not being discrete or protecting my
privacy--I just can't remember don't want to climb the stairs to check on the
rig itself ;-) It's a CW-only rig with the I/O, 160M, NB mods. The filter
cases were grounded, filters aligned with Spectrogram, several other mods
completed last year including installation of the speaker grill cloth (you don't
suppose *that's* the problem, maybe the fabric has too tight a weave for the
sound to get out??).

Well, that probably tips you off to my level of RF sophistication. So, if any of
you can suggest what I should check or look for, I'd be very grateful.

The enclosed link will take you to an album of the photos I took while building
KX1 SN: 18 this past weekend. It might give you an idea of what the insides
of a KX1 look like. Note: I always do a complete inventory before stating any
kit no matter large or small.

[Elecraft] KD5ONS, ECN and those Pesky KX1's

2004-08-24 Thread Art-W6KY
Kevin, KD5ONS, ECN Guru made the remark in one of his
ECN eMail announcments that the 'Pesky' KX1's always
seem to get thru when the K1's and K2's can't and there
must be an EleCraft secret behind this.
T H E R E I S !
It's the fabled RF Hyper Wavefront Accelerator Circuit that
has been kept secret for over 60 years. EleCraft uses this
circuit in the KX1's final.
Discovered during the Manhatten Project of WWII, this
RF circuit accelerates RF electrons past the speed of light.
Normal wattmeters can only detect 1/100 of the RF as it
speeds past. Therefore, when the wattmeter is reading
5 watts, it's actually 500 watts!
Small antennas such as Slinky dipoles, HamSticks,
Quads(that's another whole subject) have been known
to catch on fire or explode as the RF electrons pile
up while waiting to radiate.
It's still a mystery how EleCraft acquired this circuit as the
Dept of Defense requires a 'Burn Before Reading' clearance
for access.
So, KX1 owners, keep your antennas waxed and fire hoses
standing by while checking into the ECN and keep the power
down to a couple hundred watts...

It seems the K1 has fallen off the radar screen here on the Elecraft
reflecter and I wonder why. I have a K2 which is wonderful for CW ops in
 my
shack, but it is not as stingy with power as my K1 and too valuable a
 radio
to be bouncing around in the field. Also it is significantly bigger when
  packing into the wilderness.

Darn
 near
as neat as the KX1 plug in paddle.

I have a complete station, the K1, a 10 cell AA battery pack, wire
 antenna,
headphones and logbook all in an insulated soft sided lunch bag. This goes
everywhere with me and is without exception THE MOST FUN radio I have ever
owned, used or heard tell about!

If you don't have a K1, borrow one and you will become a believer too.

I love my K1 sn 1647 dearly! I own a K2 also; but maybe I'm a bit
biased because I built the K1 first - I like it better !!! I take it to
work with me every day and operate during lunchtime (weather permitting)
from the parking lot. I have a padded case with the K1, a 12V 7aH SLA,
a solar panel for charging the battery, headphones, key and tools and meter.

I have the KAT-1 installed and just love it! It makes using the
Hamsticks or hombrewed Buddipole a breeze! I also have a 10 AA battery
holder with NiMH AAs that I use when I don't feel like carting the
heavier lead acid battery around. I had the K1 internal battery
thingie; but took it out. I like the stock speaker better than the
smaller one necessary for use with the internal battery.

My K1 has 40, 30, 20 and 15 meters installed. I use it just about
everyday; and it's a real life saver. There's nothing better than a
little lunchtime QRP to burn away stressfull mornings at work!
