[Elecraft] Hakko 808

2004-10-23 Thread Jeremiah McCarthy
Several manufacturers sell the "coiled spring" type of soldering iron
holder...I have seen them in RS too...If this type stand is too "tippy", it can
be screwed onto a small board...I have an old heavy duty holder made by Hexacon
that stands by itself...I would steer clear of using pipes...It will not allow
good air circulation and might lead to early heater failure and tip burning due
to overheating...Just my thoughts...73

Jerry and all,

Since the heater in the Haako is temperature controlled, I do not have
concerns about the tip overheating. Protecting the pipe from contact is my
primary concern.

[Elecraft] Help needed

2004-10-23 Thread ta2ah
Hi,

My K2 serial number is 4288 with all options installed, except 100 Watts module.

When Antenna 2 is selected without any antenna connected to it, I push to tune
button to try to tune it on 7Mhz band three times. Now there is not any output
on 7 Mhz and only 3 watts output on 10 Mhz.

but receive is OK on bought frequencies.

K2 works perfectly on the other bands (I am using SCG 237 antenna coupler when
I use it at my home).

How can I correct this? Any comment would be appreciated.

In view of what you said,

Snip
"When Antenna 2 is selected without any antenna connected to it, I push to
tune button to try to tune it on 7Mhz band three times. Now there is not any
output on 7 Mhz and only 3 watts output on 10 Mhz."

if this is what you meant, then by all means hook an antenna to position
Antenna2 and see what happens.

Perhaps a "real" LM386 has more noise. Noise in the NJM386B I used measured ~20
mV p-p in the absence of signal (AF pot at min, measured at the speaker).
That's 46 db down from full output, just barely audible via either speaker or
headphones. This noise is quickly concealed by other rig noise (preamp off,
dummy load connected) as soon as you turn up the AF just a bit, except for some
higher frequencies which don't get masked and are only noticeable with
headphones. Putting the 380 back in, I measured 8 mV of noise, about 8 db
better than the 386. That difference contrasts favorably to the 11 db
difference in gain I observed between the two.

I then installed an RC network with the 386, as mentioned above (2.7K/.01u,
copying what's in the KX1). It didn't change the level of the overall noise
significantly, but it did pretty much remove the noticeable higher frequencies
from the output.

All in all, not a bad change - trading about 2 db in maximum volume for about
11 db in gain. Since I socketed this and built everything piggyback on the 386,
it's a simple chip swap to revert to stock condition.

[Elecraft] HALP! K2/100 and KIO2 seem DEAF to serial comms.

2004-10-23 Thread Tom Hammond

Hi Folks:

Posting this to both the Elecraft and the TRLOG reflectors, in the hop that
someone can assist. Not sure if it's a TRLOG or an Elecraft (or OPERATOR)
problem.

Interesting failure here... one which also occurred the morning of Field
Day 2004 (perfect timing, right?).

When running TRLOG from a DOS window in Win98SE:

When EITHER the KPA100 or the KIO2 are connected to the
'built-for KIO2/KPA100' serial cable, either device can
SEND data to my laptop, running TRLOG, but NEITHER will
acknowledge data SENT from the laptop to the KIO2/KPA100.

I can have the PORT parameter send the current frequency
TO the laptop and it displays on the laptop... so I know
that it's receiving data from the K2 when it's being polled,
   IF it was being polled.

However, if I have TRLOG to send to the KIO2/KPA100 any
command (a band change comment for instance), I can see
(with my o'scope) the data at the input (pin 6) to the
MAX1406, but I see no output (pin 11) from the MAX1406.
   Not even a faint whimper.

To further compound my confusion...

When having booted to DOS (either from within Win98SE or from a cold boot),
as soon as I boot TRLOG and the main screen appears, I get a "RADIO ONE
POLLING DISABLED" message. Doing a [Ctrl-J] and resetting RADIO ONE POLLING
to TRUE results in TRLOG NOT allowing me to save the changes..! So polling
remains disabled. Go figger.

The serial cable (the one specially made to interface the K2 to the Laptop
has been confirmed to be wired correctly... heck it's worked for several
YEARS before starting to fail, and I have NO intervening 'serial' cables
which might much up the connection.

On the K2, PORT is set to 'ON'.

Any suggestions out there? I'm open to all suggestions.

Oh yeah, yes, I JUST replaced the MAX1406 (serial comms) chip in both the
KPA100 and the KIO2 with new ones... in case the old ones were bad...
couldn't tell for certain, but I AM fairly confident that I was seeing
serial data coming to the RXD line, but not being passed thru the previous
MAX1406 to its output.

Tom HammondN0SS

Hi

I use a OHR WM-2 qrp wattmeter

http://www.mtechnologies.com/ohr/wattmeter.htm

It is available as a kit or assembled and I have found it to be accurate and
reliable. I use it just about all the time to align all the Elecraft products.
OHR also has a nice 100 watt dummy load that I use when aligning the KPA100.

Re: [Elecraft] QRP Pwr/VSWR meter

2004-10-23 Thread Larry Phipps

Check out my E-Meter at www.telepostinc.com/n8lp.html

I am getting very close to offering a kit version of it. A comprehensive
article will also be published in QEX in the near future if want to
homebrew your own. They accepted my manuscript a few weeks ago, but
haven't given me the publication date yet. A prototype of the E-Meter is
at a friend's shop as we speak for verification of results... I have a
pretty good arsenal of test equipment, but not nearly as impressive as his.

The meter will display power accurately from about -17 dBm (.02
milliwatt) to+63 dBm (2000W) in four selectable scales, and SWR
accurately down to +10 dBm (10 milliwatt)... this is about the
theoretical limit one can measure SWR of a decent antenna due to
external signals typically present on the antenna.

Hello John,

set. I've been using my K2 for a long time now but recently saw a post
about the setting of L34 and I did hear a noticable difference when I
set L34 using an N-Gen and Spectrogram.
My K2 worked fine but now it has better volume, which is always nice
